This week, the Digital Dispatch comes to you from the floor of PC
Expo, the New York City-based trade show that's become one of the
computer industry's most enduring, and grueling, rituals. CNET's
editors and reporters descended on the Big Apple to cover the
products, trends, and companies on display, as well as to make a
little news of our own: for the first time, CNET was chosen to
judge PC Expo's Best of Show awards. The editorial staff pored
over more than 150 entries--reviewing everything from wireless
gadgets to enterprise-level software--and handed out six awards,
including the coveted Best of Show prize. You'll find the winners
and finalists on the site at "PC Expo 2000: Future Technology
Today." Check it out to get a snapshot of where high tech is
today, and a glimpse of where it's headed tomorrow.

Almost everyone we know takes advantage of some Web-based,
free email program. These emailers are as ubiquitous as
Starbucks, as convenient as online shopping, and as easy to
use as a Web browser. We reviewed four top options. Read on to
see which one we like best.

5. Hardware: Some Like It Hot: Leading-Edge Home PCs
They say that absolute power corrupts absolutely. But when it
comes to absolute power, we say, cool. PC makers appeal to
this greed for speed with home computers that are powerful
enough to rattle your windowpanes. The evidence: Home PCs that
resemble high-end workstations but at prices like those of
cozy information appliances.

10. Top Ten Webcams We'd Like to See
Inspired by the recent popularity of the CornCam
(http://1.digital.cnet.com/cgi-bin1/flo?y=eoK0wEHr0k0DMST ),
we put on our thinking caps to come up with a few more zany
24/7, real-time cameras we'd like to click to. A few
possibilities:
1. Los Alamos Copy Machine Cam: Good citizens should always be
on the lookout for items of national security that might turn
up here next.
2. DoubleClick Cam: Discover who else the Internet ad giant
might be conspiring with--besides the government, that is--to
violate our privacy.
3. Elian Gonzales Cam: D'oh! It'll be too hard to doctor the
images in real time.
4. Oracle Detective Cam: Watch the watchers who were hired by
this company to defrock Microsoft's sneaky PR machine. Is
this legal?
5. Celera Genomics Lab Cam: Learn the secrets of the human
genome and breed your own race of superhumans at home. This
is what the Net was made for.
6. Perky Paper Clip Cam: What does this animated wonder do when
we're not looking? Secretly integrate all the programs on
your desktop? Erase help files?
7. Oval Office Cam: This one could be mounted on brackets under
the desk.
8. Barnes & Noble Harry Potter Line Cam: Not much movement here,
but you can keep an eye on your kids...and unsuspecting
coworkers who would never admit to wanting this book.
9. Survivor Snack Cam: What are the emcee and camera crew
chowing on while everyone else eats rats?
10. Generic Start-up Cam: Watch employees play with their dogs,
shoot pool, count their options, and bite their fingernails.
