Unless you have been living under a rock, you know about the British service members who were accused of violating Iranian territorial water and taken into custody by the Iranian government. If you don't then I just don't know what to tell you Please don't tell me you have no idea what is going on because it would disturb me to hear that.
I've been following it with a growing sense of pessimistic foreboding. It's not just this one incident really, it's just that something about it is giving me a real 'sinking of the Lusitania' kind of vibe.
I've been trying to think through this logically. Making sense of things via set theory is the last bastion of ivory towerdom I retain from the comforting brick pillars of pure, unadulterated academic escapism.
There are exactly two possibilities: A or B where A ≠ B
Possibility A: The HMS Cornwall was in Iranian water and therefore the Iranians were justified in detaining the British service members.
Possibility B: The HMS Cornwall was not in Iranian water in which case either: 1. The Iranians thought they were at the time or 2: Knew they were not in Iranian water and took them anyway.
Assumption: That there is such a thing as internationally recognized Iranian territory defined in the usual sort of longitude and latitude military speak, denoted with a bright clear obvious line of contrasting color on maps that someone interested in that sort of thing would have readily available should he be so inclined to check.
But then perhaps none of that matters, what does matter is: Why did they do it?
1. Some overzealous commander went off grid and enforced the regulations to the letter because he thought it would bring honor and glory to the empire.
(was that a bit over the top?) moving on
2. They took them because fuck you we're not afraid of the powers of the west. We spit on the west. Death to America.
Say it with me, don't it just roll of the tongue, death to America. Oh hell what difference does it make British America death to the whole lot of 'em.
Isn't that quite the knicker twister, hey thanks for driving a wedge into a somewhat shaky relationship with the one country out there who continues to have friendly ties with the US.
I believe there was an incident some time back involving a supposed breach of Iranian water by the British. There was a considerable amount of public outcry over the Iranian government backing off. Are they trying to come off as badasses here?
If so then there are two ways to go:
They could gain the upper hand here by releasing them now and making a big show about how "they" are better than "we" are because they didn't mistreat them etc etc etc.
They could continue this little game of their until they manage to provoke the British into attacking and if there's anything we've learned from TV its that when your partner starts firing you start firing so Bishop captures Knight (E6) check.
3. They took them because they are irrational, fucking crazy, and just don't give a shit what happens. Maybe they think they really can win this thing. If that's true then there is no solution other than a military offensive. King to G6 checkmate.
In conclusion, I just don't know. It's just that watching this news story unfold gives me that eerie unsettled feeling that you get when you hear that music and know that there is danger lurking just under the surface.
In other news, I'm going digging for trilobites in the Utah desert this summer. I know my life is one action packed death defying thrill ride, but I don't care. I rather like fossils. Nothing says escapism like hiding out in the middle of the Utah desert cracking open limestone shale.

I don't really even think it can be disputed that Iran didn't do this for anything other than a power move to prove they still can kick around the West like they've always done. I mean, even if the ship was in Iranian waters by a few hundred feet...would they storm the ships and then promote these soldiers on Television as a propaganda tool the way they have?
I don't think the UK has the guts to do anything about it and I believe 100% that the Iranians calculated with full accuracy that they could do this at will. And you know what? They can do it all day long.
.
.
.
Iran will let these guys go on "their terms" and publicize this. Some kind of "guilty as charged" trial and a "amnesty" offering and release.
.
.
.
I think Iran will put these guys through a quick trial, find them guilty, and then offer immediate amnesty and repatriation to the British. That's just a guess... I could be wrong.

Old news, the GPS data proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were in Iraqi waters. This is just a play by ahmendinijad (spelling...) to show his power in front of the Iranian population, which generally hates the guy. Not to go with the cliche, but he is basically the hitler of our time.

Relations between the west and Iran are about as bad as they can get without a war.
The Iranians know this won't cause a war, and know that relations can't get any worse anyway....so they're just doing this because
A) To stir up a nice patriotic feeling amongst the populace
B) To unite the populace with a common enemy (the west) by claiming that we actually did trespass into Iranian waters (there was an incident a couple of years back where we actually did go into Iranian waters (either by accident or not), the prisoners were released after about a week, the equipment and boats were kept)
C) Local Revolutionary Guard Commander did it just because he felt like pissing off the British, and the Iranian govt decided to go with the flow rather than have it seem like local commanders are out of control.
D) We really did trespass, and the HMS Cornwall is lying about the coordinates.
E) The craft we were searching at the time had something on board that the Iranians really sdidn't want us to see.....there's already been trouble recently about Official Iranian Army weaponry getting into the hands of the Iraqi.....what to call them.....not the terrorists....not the smugglers.....the 'we want the americans and British out of our country' people.
-------------------------------------------------------
I would guess A, B, and C as most likely with a chance of E.
D I have a problem with. I can't see the British Navy having their head that far up their ass, they would be watching where they are like a hawk. Of course there is the chance that they deliberately crossed into Iranian waters, but I don't think Blair is buddy buddy enough with Dubya to order his navy to cross over and escalate things.

It looks like Iran is going to let them go. They probably thought they were American when they took them and then didn't know what to do with them once they had them. Of course they could have checked their teeth, that would have helped.

You ignore me because you cannot answer me. I 'selected' my argument because those are the points on which you were most obviously weak."""
in what way were my points weak? you said that the iran reformists was only disinformation to make us believe that the situation is not hostile. then i told you that if that is lies, then why is it ignored in the US media? then you implied it is purposefully ignored for obvious reasons and called me a dumbass, not realizing that you had just validated the information you had just called erroneous. wtf, indeed?
then you go back to say that the composition of the iran government (moderates, reformists and hardliners) is not real info because i don't cite my sources (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_reformists) despite the fact that this has been common knowledge for more than a decade (and you say i ignore history). are those parties inventions and this political movivement inventions of the CIA? What are YOUR sources to prove that, hmmm?
So let's see...you say this information is wrong, then you validate it by implying the US media ignores it for obvious reasons, then you go back to saying it's wrong and that i should cite my sources even though you make baseless over the top claims and that i ignore historical context even though that political movement has been occuring way before this crisis.

"actually, that information seems vastly ignored by US media who approach this diplomatic showdown with war on their mind."
-------
...why do you think that is, Caul? Why would the U.S. media be doing this? Take a wild guess, dumbass.
-------
"that info is based on Iran observers and the fact that the iranian government is deeply divided between moderates and the current enraged fuckheads in power."
-------
Says who? What "observers"? Journalists? CIA operatives? Western diplomats? Give sources for this alleged information, because wen you don't and when the media itself doesn't, it just looks like propaganda. In fact, without citing specific instances to back up these claims or offering an open forum for rebuttal from an opposing viewpoint, one can only rightly conclude that he is being deliberately misled.
Here's how the situation looks from where I stand: we've built up our naval presence off the coast of Iran and now find ourselves in a dangerous political standoff. It also appears to me that this is just what a few people want who have been trying for the past 3 years to smear the country and government of Iran any way they possibly can. It also is pretty darned apparent to me why someone would do this; to put it bluntly, it has everything to do with what lies beneath their feet.
A simple look at the last 50 years of Iranian history should give you a clue, but of course, you don't see where history has anything to do with this. You're one of those who thinks that current events are the result of the localized events leading up to them and 'conspiracies', the kind that supplant entire governments for western gain, don't exist.

No, the world IS very hostile. But all of that cannot be attributed to the US government and coorpations or whatever buzz word comes out of your fingers. "They took them because they are irrational, fucking crazy, and just don't give a shit what happens. Maybe they think they really can win this thing. If that's true then there is no solution other than a military offensive. King to G6 checkmate."
Now that might makes sense to a retarded southerner like yourself, but the truth is, there are more than one solution to this than a military offensive. There are more factors to this than 'they are fucking crazy, we have to go to war!" (wow)
Perhaps you didn't read that on your FoxNews report, but the government of Iran is under growing pressure from reformists within its own country and is getting more and more alienated with its current antics. It's pretty much a question of time before the hard liners we see today get replace. I assume the US government is not completly retarded like yourself and knows that easily verifiable information and will keep exercising pressure on Iran to contain it and buy time because a. the US doesn't have the strength nor credibility to open a new, and much larger theater of war b. there are no significant actions that would justify escalating to full out war except mediatized muscle flexing like this that make morons like yourself think that the next step to a (possible) hostage crisis is wWIII c. it can be solved diplomatically, especially with the context within iran and that for once, the US and it's partners are on tune. The US has completly cut off ties and ignored that country for decades. It might not be abnormal that renewed talks with egomaniacs at both end of the table lead to some tensions.
now that's only a personal simplified GLIMPSE of this multidimensional problem, which i really don't have the pretention of fully understanding but i am pretty SURE it's more complicated than saying "THESE GUYS ARE LIKE, CRAZY, YO!? BRING ON DA BOMBS! LOL!!111eleventy1"
you have the right to find the situation worriesome and i know diplomacy is not as exciting and cool as war but crisis like these are usually detailed in fucking TOMES so take your little 10 years old commentary and shove it up your husky dogs' ass.

Good show, run and hide behind what "other" people think because you don't have the balls to take me on all by your little lone self. How cute, why don't you come back and play some other time like perhaps when you grow a pair, get some kind of backup for an actual debate, and decide to stop crying about what other people think.
"Other" have jumped off the Golden Gate bridge, maybe you should try that too.

There's a comic I like. I'd link you the strip, but it's in a language (I assume) you don't understand (no insult, just fact). The general gist of it is, a guy and girl sitting at a bar. Guy tries to start a conversation, several times, in several different ways, and gets escalating versions of "shut up" from the girl. When the guy just won't quit, she turns to him and says "If you want to discuss current events in this day and age, you're going to have to pay for my therapy."

"In conclusion, I just don't know. It's just that watching this news story unfold gives me that eerie unsettled feeling that you get when you hear that music and know that there is danger lurking just under the surface."
Don't worry. Your government is in control and will save you from the demons. They will quell this "danger" that seeks to threaten your world. Just remember...WE are the good guys. Not them. And pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
Fucking morons, all of us. I'm sick of counting myself among the ranks of humanity. Lord, save me from this madness once and for all. Save me from myself! Please tell me my work here is done. Just let me back into the fold...into the dirt...where thoughts trouble noone.

HOLY SHIT I have never in my life seen such a more effective argument. It has everything, fully documented support, line by line rebuttal of the original assertion, and a conclusion that is so elegant and poetic that it makes me weep. I only wish I had used arguments like this back when I was in high school debate but alas our debate coach just never let us use the "oh yea" defense.
It could only perhaps be second to this as a rebuttal:

You fuckin' morons.
It's called a PRETEXT
Picture youself as a Blair, or a Bush. If you are embroiled in an outmoded, unpopular power structure that spans the Atlantic, with elections coming up in which you WILL get tossed out on your arse, and your paymasters firmly believe in destabalising the middle east as a path to personal power and riches, not to mention wars make the incumbants immensely popular, would you...
a) graciously accept defeat (fuck it, lets turn our backs on a lifetime of successfull political grasping and backstabbing and fucking people over because this time, it looks like the game is up. And those memoirs won't write themselves.)
b) spend your last few months in power ramming through domestic legislation that your paymasters want, I mean, that you deeply believe in (ohhh that's right, the common legislature houses are dominated by your factional rivals, your bills ain't going anywhere.)
c) manufacture a reason to kick off a war. (how we gonna do that? All we've got is these elite forces that the people respect and admire, not tarring them with our stained reputations, who will do ANYTHING WE SAY, regardless of how stupid it is, cos keeping their oath is part and parcel of what makes them great, and an enemy we've been pushing all over the political map, who re built on a fundamentalist support base who demand dirent responses to direct action...)
How do you think the commander of the boat felt, when his orders read "Incur into Iranian waters, patrol a five square mile area and await further instructions?
How do you think the ship's commander felt when he read his orders "Launch vessel as instructed. Await further instruction. Break radio silence if, and only if, enemy contact is made."
Like shit, is how
And the men still went and did their jobs.
And dragged us all step deeper into our eternal war.

I don't know where in Utah you are going, but you should check out the Dugway Geode beds for some nice rocks. It is a nerd thing, yeah... But so is fossil hunting! NERD! NERD!
Anyway, the waterway between Iraq & Iran was hotly contested and was part of the reason for the Iran/Iraq war.
If Jimmy Carter had balls, we wouldn't even be in the mess that we are today. Worst president ever.
Iran will let these guys go on "their terms" and publicize this. Some kind of "guilty as charged" trial and a "amnesty" offering and release.
Iran, like Iraq, continues to live under the illusion that their military is powerful and can defend the nation. Acts like this reinforce it. F-15's, F-16s, Stealth bombers, B52s, cruise missiles, Apaches, MK-6 little birds, and AC130 Spectres can remove this false belief real fast.
I don't think the act is enough to provoke war, but think about this "conspiracy theory". Iran grabs 16 soldiers and the price of oil rises to record highs. Who cashes in on this? The oil connection is certainly there in this situation.
I think Iran will put these guys through a quick trial, find them guilty, and then offer immediate amnesty and repatriation to the British. That's just a guess... I could be wrong.

what the fuck is the british battleship doing in the middle-east?
it's not to use in iraq,
it is used to threaten the iranians
to both sides, this is a game of positioning
and they both deserve what they get

you put across a fair point, the one thing that makes me wonder, if the Iranians are really forcing the Brits to make the statements they have, then they are gonna run a hige risk in letting them go, lets face it, the British media are no pussy cats when it comes to pay outs, and those servicemen will be offered enough money at some point or another to sell their story, at which point the Iranians lose any good will they may have gained from the west for treating "enemy" troops well, so they're faced with option A) kill em and have done with it or B)let em go and further an increasingly rocky situation - in short a no win situation....it just all seems a little too cold war to me. I can't get my head round what's going on.
