I made a decision to take out the trashcut back on all the things in my life that contribute mainly bullshit and unnecessary negativity (Ubersite), distance myself from toxic people, and make a conscious effort to focus on things and relationships that make me feel good, like I'm moving forward in life. I also decided to stop being a bitch. Then I realized the impossible loftiness of that goal and settled for trying to let go of useless, stifling feelings like guilt, blame, and jealousy.
I'm graduating next month. Arguably the three most important things I learned in college are:
1. Take clean dishes directly out of the dishwasher, thereby avoiding the superfluous step of unloading them into cabinets and taking them back out again.
2. How to waste upwards of $100,000 and set myself up for a lifetime of debt.
3. Cockroaches love peanut butter.
After this, I have no idea what I'm going to do or where I'm going to go. I am alone and nervous, but this is the first time in my life that I feel free. My only responsibilities are putting food in my mouth and a roof over my head; no personal attachments stand between me and my dreams. I can stop dreaming and just do.
I'd like to find a job in a sunny place where people love life, where music and culture and beauty are everywhere, where I can hang out late at night somewhere besides a smoky bar, where I can drive for hours down a scenic road in the middle of February, enjoying the fresh air. Where flavor and passion rule over the humdrum of suburban, middle-class life.
I'm going through each of my personal possessions and asking myself if I love it or if it has serious sentimental value, and if the answer is no, I give it to my roommates.
I cut my drinking in half because it makes me childish and emotional.
This is the longest I've gone without being in some type of romantic relationship since I was thirteen years old. I've also temporarily thrown in the love towel and tried to stop worrying about if and when I'll marry the superhuman man of my dreams and start pumping out babies.
Back to basics, I'm starting a new phase of life with a clean slate.
I think I'm going to pick up some new hobbies when I find a job and get settled. I want to really learn how to play my guitar, maybe take a Latin dance class, and master some kind of technical skill that will help me earn me more than a pitiful $35,000/year.
I just wanted to say that I'm looking forward to the rest of my life and I plan on living it like the driver rather than sitting in the backseat, hoping it will take me where I want to go, and cursing it when it doesn't.
Bye now.

Yeah, we pay for the sunshine :-(
I'm in the East Bay Area - just east of SF, south of Oakland, north of Silicon Valley (San Jose)
I'm living in one of the relatively cheaper area's - 1 bdr apt here would probably be anywhere from $900 to $1500, depending on the "niceness" and size - and area of course. There are huge microcosms - the two places could be half a mile apart.
I currently pay below market, $1350 for 2rm 1000 sq. ft. duplex w/ 2-car garage, in a so-so area.
Looking to buy, and the equivalant places are going for $400,000.

Hey Crystle, where in California do you live and what is the cost of living like? A couple people I've met that are originally from the LA area say that it's comparable to Chicago, but not according to craigslist. Plus, it looks like I can get a 1-bedroom apartment in Austin for roughly $200 less per month than a shitty studio with bars on the windows in LA.

there's a lot less plastic in Austin and San Antonio is only an hour away. can't beat it. if it's good enough for Lance Armstrong, it's good enough for anybody. the cost of living is incredibly cheap down there too. a lot cars in Austin have bumper stickers that say "Keep Austin weird". it's also the live music capital of the world and has the largest public university in the country. and it's the capital of Texas, the greatest state i have ever had the privilege of living in. there's a ranch in Texas that is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.
SUCK ON THAT, NEW ENGLAND!
let's not forget- i got drunk as fuck on sixth street more times than i can count and they were all awesome. i've never had a bad time in Austin. EVER.

i don't think you understand how crazy some of these people actually are. real lives have gotten fucked pretty good because of this "virtual negativity". hurt or destroyed marriages, death threats, stalkers, bannings from countries, you name it. a shit ton of crazy things have happened because of this "virtual negativity". i personally don't participate any more because of all the nutjobs on here. i just come around every once in a while when i'm bored to check up on the couple people i actually give a shit about.

I see what you're saying, and I didn't take those extreme (but relevant) cases into account with my comments below. So, thanks for the reminder.
That's why I'm fairly careful with my identity here.

I personally find it hilarious how rude people are on here, because IT'S NOT REAL. It's only VIRTUAL negativity.
And even that can be avoided. If you establish yourself as a user who can, at least, produce a semi-coherent post. Or if you don't engage in cuntish behavior yourself by stirring shit.

100k of student loan debt is not nearly as bad as credit card debt. The interest rate is significantly lower - somewhere around 4-5% - as compared to credit cards which can be over 20%. Plus, the interest you pay on the loan is tax deductible. At 4% per year, you're paying $4,000 in interest which when deducted from your taxes would result in about a $1,000 credit.
It's a lot of money, but compare your salary to what you'd be making working part time at the local Wal-Mart and it's nothing. Welcome to the machine.
-----------------------
...but please, for those of us who are being responsible: forego the graduation-present-to-yourself BMW and pay off your student loans properly. Graduating, fucking off for a year and then declaring bankruptcy to get out from under the debt you chose to accept helps no one in the long term. Especially not you, as employers always check your credit. I'm just sayin'.

good luck with that. find a good job and try not to suck at it. good thing about animation and whatnot, you can probably get in on the ground floor of some kind of startup and then pray lots of prayers to the god of art majors that they blow up and get bought out and your stock options turn into many many mils. remember, even the janitors at youtube and google and countless other startups are millionaires now.
there was an awesome dilbert comic somewhere, where alice and some other chick have to go ask an engineer a question, but to do so they first have to appologize for being liberal arts majors. its condescending and awesome, but i can't find it.
thats all.

Its when I hear things like this that I thank GOD that my parents had an epiphany during the latter half of my senior year of HS. I had even paid the deposit to a private school when my Mum all of a sudden decided "Murph (why my parents nicknamed me Murphy is beyond me), you know that public school you didn't want to go to at all? Yeah well you will be going there. Temper tantrums on this subject will only get you the back of my hand, now go put on the kettle for your father's tea." That was that, went to public school, came out with no debt and didnt use either of my degrees. WHOOHOO GO EDUCATION!

ALSO, Ubersite isn't ACTUAL negativity.
So, no need to purge yourself of it.
========================================================
what parallel universe do YOU live in?
i come to ubersite about once a month when i take time off work and quickly realize, like every month, that this place is full of immature adults, immature teenagers (same thing), and people that are COMPLETELY INSANE. i'm not a quick learner and hence, keep coming back. i've been working out to cure boredom while away from work to get my workaholic ass back in shape. it's been a much better distraction than coming here, that's for sure.
we're all better off without ubersite. it's fun for a while, but so was smoking and drinking heavily. you can't do it forever.

$100,000.00 is an assload of debt. Given that it takes the average person something like 12 years to clear off $5000.00 in credit card debt, or 25 years to clear a mortgage (which your debt load strongly resembles), you're sort of screwed. Especially since you have no equity to leverage as the degree isn't really a tangible asset.
Splitting it was smart. If you can pay it off faster as a smaller amount, then it won't hamper you in terms of persuing other financial opportunities for as long.

Yes, simple living. Prune away.
Major changes in my life recently. New job starts next week, slowly getting new clothes (& out with the old), shaved my head (Britney, what an inspiration!), exercising more than once per year (around 2-3 times per week), just became single recently... What's that, you couldn't care less? So?
RE: Your situation-
Colorado? You could hike in warm weather during the day, and drive 2 hours and ski in cold weather at night.
As for avoiding smokey bars... good luck finding other avenues of social interaction at night with people your age. If you do, let me know how you pulled it off.
(Or maybe people are just more apt to be alcoholics in NE Ohio.)

For $100,000 you had better have a Juris Doctorate or something equitable. I sincerely hope you didn't rack that up for a measly bachelor's degree.
Nothing like that. Someone should probably have advised me against a private art school when I was a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed 19-year-old.
--------------------
Let me get this straight.
You've accumulated over 100 grand in debt and you have a bachelor's degree in Art?
Welcome to adulthood. Unfortunately you are at a stark disadvantage. Consider whoring yourself out at $250 a trick and you might be in the black in 30 years.

"I cut my drinking in half..."
--????????????????
"because it makes me childish and emotional."
--Oh.
And what Drogo and C-Thorns said.
I'll have my student loan paid in full this month. I'm 39. I had nowhere near $100,000 in debts. Good luck.

You'd probably thrive in Flordia. Like Miami or something.
Unfortuantly its getting as expensive, if not more so, to live there than in NYC.
But I would keep it on as a long term goal.

That will take some doing...Good luck, and i've seen some around here, who would gladly agree to just 100k debt. RULE! This is your time!

Being childish and emotional is going to get you through to your 40s. Embrace those qualities.
Your image attachment just reminded me...didn't Tiger do a good job on Dancing With the Stars last night?

Go to a community college and take one class a year. The interest you will have saved while paying off your school loan will be better in the long run.

And paying off the debt???????????
Good luck with life it's the only one you have; why spend it letting people make you miserable? Sod it; let them carry on being miserable on their own time.
+2 for positive outlook!
