Poor bloody cat. He stopped eating about 4 days ago so we figured he should go to the vet. I thought he was just sooking, he tended to do that if he'd been in a fight and lost or hadn't been paid enough attention.
We found out yesterday that he had an acute liver infection, possibly from deliberate poisoning, and FIV, aka cat AIDS. The liver thing was the immediate concern, and could have been secondary to the FIV. It was going to be weeks of fluids and stuff, and at the end of it he might not have even been better.
On top of this, Stan was an outside cat. He'd spend days lying in the sun, and nights chasing mice and baby possums. He was bloody good at it too. The catch (excuse the pun), was that cats with FIV must be kept indoors, lest they infect others.
Subjecting Stan to the treatment and the ongoing pain of his condition was bad enough, but now he had to be restricted to indoors only. And truth be told, he wasn't going to get better in the long run.
In the end, we couldn't do it to him. He'd have gone mad, and driven us mad at the same time. He'd have been in pain constantly.
Stan will fall asleep tongiht for the last time.

I've always really liked cats and wanted to get one of my own for the longest time. Busted me up when I suddenly developed a pretty bad allergy towards them. I'm sorry for the loss mate. Remember the good times, remember the bad, anything man, just remember.

had the same thing happen a bit over a year ago with my 14 year old cat, she had liver issues that made it so even when she tried to eat shed be sick to her stomache, turned out she had liver and kidney issues due due to kitty diabetes
it sucks

Buddy of mine had a cat who had the liver thing happen, also. I apparently drew the short straw and had to drive him and the cat to the animal hospital. One of the closest times I've come to crying in years is when he had to say goodbye to his cat for the last time. Harsh.
