The 90s had good music. Right? That's true, isn't it? Generation X or whatever found their sound with bands like Nirvana. As far as the music that characterised the 90s was good, like grunge or the tail end of good rock, I wonder what my generation will have to look back upon. I was too young for Nirvana. I remember being 7 years old and hearing the Smashing Pumpkins and thinking it was pretty good, then not touching them again for years.
Sure I listened to the music that was hippin and hoppin back then, but it's not the same now. I can't go see Kurt smash a guitar at a concert. Woodstock 99 was the end of it. Sure bands like Korn and Metallica still tour, but it's a tired act. I got my ass kicked in the mosh pit when they played, but there was a nagging in the back of my head, that I just slightly missed the heyday for this stuff.
What will my generation look back on? I was born in 88, so am I going to see classics from 2008 in twenty years being shit like Fallout Boy or Linkin Park. Even the good stuff today isn't that great. I mean the stuff that's still alive and thriving on the culture or music. I'm asking you the question, uber, what is the good music out there right now? Give me names, damn it I need something that isn't generic or thin. You know what I mean.
Define good music. It's a task that has not been completed, despite infinite conversations between innumerable people. Let's give it a shot.
So this wasn't a complete waste of your time, have this. It's a British propaganda leaflet from WWII. They dropped these all over Germany to crush morale. It's the Hermann Goerring's reactions to the German bombings of Allied cities going from glee to horror at the Allied bombing of German cities. Rather comical.
Indeed.
My good chap.

Hundreds of years ago there was a lot of music out, but only certain pieces like Beethoven's 9th or a few Mozart "riffs" are familiar to broad population. People who like classical music might have a deeper knowledge of Chopin, Paganini, Bach, Tchaikofsky etc but only certain artists. They're all who have survived hundreds of years of time.
Who will people in 2200 and 2300 listen to from our age? I'm betting on the Beatles, though I'd be disappointed if Metallica isn't still appreciated when I'm old.
As for me, I was 11 in 2001 when it seems all the pop dance emo shit was coming out. There's not a lot of good stuff I can remember...Avenged Sevenfold is good now if you like them, I'd say Tool is a fading star. I was listening to Eminem's early stuff and was surprised at how good it was, but he was at his best when people hated him, now he's accepted pretty much.
Still, most music on the top 10 list is pretty damn bad. But I do like that one Daughtry song ;(

I cant say the 90s were bad because Tool put out Opiate in 1991...although overall there's a real dearth of quality...
Rage, Tool, Nirvana, Clutch, Kyuss/QOTSA, Muse.
Middle to late 90s sucked hard with Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park, all that Nu-Metal garbage.

You are pretty much screwed. Music is as bad now as it was in the 80's. Try again next decade.

The 80s fuckin rocked: the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Replacements, The Cure, REM, The Fall, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen

If you want a band that has a really good technical guitar to it, check out Dream Theater. Their next album is supposed to come out in May. They're more along the lines of Progessive Metal/Rock.
Also, around the same genre, check out Tool and Muse.

I agree, I was born in 87, and the only mainstream bands that came out during our middleschool/highschool years which are still worth listening to are Blink182 and Third Eye Blind. 3EB is actually one of my all time favs (the first two albums are perfect pop rock). Otherwise its all trash.

Prior to 1990 or so, "Alternative" music was literally gay music like The Cure, but suddenly alternative became mainstream, and music began to suck ass.

I'd say in 20 years, people will still listen to the Mars Volta and some of the lesser known acts today. The revival of prog rock in Scandinavia will probably be remembered and I don't know...I guess 90s electronica will be remembered in the UK.

I've seen both Korn and Metallica recently, and they both fucking suck live now. Most old(er) metal does, though Maiden still put on a fucking awesome show. NIN live is pretty intense too.
Unfortunately, in terms of 'harder' music, there's fuck all good out there, though if you're willing to give a weird album a chance, I'd recommend Grinderman; Nick Cave's new band. First listening is bizarre, second it grows on you and third time around it had become my shagging album of choice.
Fuck trying to find something decent that's out now though. Get some Jesus and Mary Chain, Daisy Chainsaw, Union Underground, Meathook Seed, The Dwarves, Chemlab (especially East Side Militia, great record), Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky... I could go on for a while.

I was 18 in 1988...
I think that 1990's was the absolute worst decade for music. In fact I stopped listening to anything new about 1993 when it was all 'dance' music - at least it was over here in England. Sometime early 2000 new (good) bands started making an appearance.
Oh and Metallica was out in the 1980's.
--
Although only 11 in 1988; I do feel the same about music as Merlina above. I hate dance music with a passion that rivals my hatred of Lychees, And I seem them as the seeds of Satans sperm.
Morning all!

taste in music is very subjective. Do you like a particular group or type of music? Then, to you, that's good music. Don't worry about what others think.
Every generation has its musicians and pop stars. Pop stars are manufactured and marketed to the masses. The musicians are the ones in it for the love of the music.
I know a rather large, stereotypical tough guy (body builder, works as a bouncer, bench presses tractors, etc.) who dearly loves Abba and the BeeGees.
Now, who is going to be insane enough to tell him that Abba and the BeeGees suck?

I like Stars. They're just... pretty.
Someone told me we'd be listening to Cake's The Distance in 20 years.
Some of Green Day's early hits might stick around too. I wonder how much of them they play live now.
Rage Against the Machine is reunited which makes me happy.
Sonic Youth is still here. If I weren't supposed to be writing a paper I'd find out if they have any new stuff that's good.
Hopefully more Postal Service albums will be made.
The new Jack Johnson song is good. I'm guessing though that since you went to Korn and Metallica concerts you might not be interested.
I could list lots of stuff, but I just don't have much faith in many bands to last.
---------
Good taste in music there. Never heard of Stars, though.

I'm probably older than Coyote, so I don't know if my opinion credits. In any case, I like Muse. Pretty mainstream, but I really don't know what's considered alternative or cool anymore.
Danger_Ranger recommended Metric to me a while back. They're quite good.

The +2 is for the propaganda leaflet, I laughed.
I'm old and uncool and most of the bands I listen to peaked either in the mid-80s or in the 1995-2000 timespan. The exception that springs to mind immediately is Mastodon. Of course, I thought Nirvana was wildly overrated and Korn does nothing for me, so your mileage may vary.

I took her out, it was a Friday night
I wore cologne to get the feeling right
We started making out, and she took off my pants
But then I turned on the TV
And thats about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're 23
And are still more amused by TV shows
What the hell is ADD?
My friends say I should act my age
Whats my age again?
Whats my age again?
Then later on, on the drive home
I called her mom from a pay phone
I said I was the cops
And your husbands in jail
This state looks down on sodomy
And thats about the time that bitch hung up on me
Nobody likes you when youre 23
And are still more amused by prank phone calls
What the hell is call ID?
My friends say I should act my age
Whats my age again?
Whats my age again?
And thats about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when youre 23
And you still act like youre in Freshman year
What the hell is wrong with me?
My friends say I should act my age
Whats my age again?
Whats my age again?
And thats about the time she broke up with me
No one should take themselves so seriously
With many years to fall in line
Why would you wish that on me?
I never want to act my age
Whats my age again?
Whats my age again?
