I started thinking about life this weekend. All the things that I could have done, or should have done. What the world would have been like without me in it, and such. You see, I had a brush with death and it got me thinking. I got in a fight this weekend and it was nothing to scoff at, I got hit, he got hit, then I got hit again. Thankfully, I landed a lucky punch on the button and he went down. Fair fight. No weapons, no problems.
Some people don't fight fair though.
A friend of said unconscious person decided to pull a knife on me and come at me from behind. Had it not been for a friend of mine jumping in to my rescue, I might not have been around to tell you this tale. Thankfully we got the knife away from the guy and "escorted" both of them out of there.
It really had me shaken up. I couldn't hold the bottle to pour shots without shaking. So I did a couple of shots of my own and finished the night up without further incident. Needless to say, my friend drank free for the rest of the night. I closed up, then went home.
That scene really got me thinking about life and death and such. And I realized there are so many ways to die, it's frightening. The list is pretty much endless
Flood, race riot, cancer, AIDS, hit-and-run, terrorist attacks, muggings, tsunamis, choking, drowning, random snipers, Bad Brakes, tripping in a stairwell, heart attack, diabetes, bear attacks, plane crashes, train wrecks, earthquakes, flash floods, tornados, landslides, infections, starvation, fire, snake bites, overdoses, etc. just to name a few.
There are only so many ways to live your life, though; You can be stoic, and let life pass you by, or you can take charge of something, ANYTHING, and be in control of your life. I choose the latter. I want to be able to look back on my life when I'm old and grey (assuming I get there) and say "Yes, I actually went for it."
Life really is something great. And the gift that humans have to be self-aware and know so much about what is going on, is so much bigger than all the bullshit that goes on around us. Some people say "What we know is nothing compared to what we don't know" and that may be true, but how often do you really stop to appreciate all the things that you DO have or what you DO know? We are a remarkable species. No other thing that has come before us has had so much of an impact on the Earth. We might not have been around as long as some of the other dominant species that have reigned on this planet before us, but we have achieved more, done more, and learned more than any of those that were before us.
And yes, I know there is violence, pestilence and war. War is hell. I realize that there is also a slew of horrific atrocities that have befallen mankind. But I am not here to talk about that. The message of this post is a positive one. So when you -2 this, don't think that I forgot about all the bullshit that comes with "achievement".
but we have also created art, music, philosophy, language, books, team sports, pictures, boats, electricity, chocolate milk and little paper cups, and that's got to be good for something, right?
I felt really good about being alive when I was done thinking. It makes me happy to know, and appreciate everything that I have. And will make me work that much harder for the things that I don't.
"I have a shitty day job" - But at least I have money.
"I have an expensive child" - But at least I have a legacy.
"I have a beer gut" - But at least I have made friends at the bar.

Cheers on not dying but, taking this post from a more thoughtful stance, I don't buy you're whole 'people rock' notion.
You dismiss the 'stoic, and let life pass you by' mode of living but I guarentee the human race would never have invented philosophy, mathematics or art without it. You see, its not as though these people literally stand there and do nothing as life goes by, they observe it. They think about it, they toss it around in their heads. They break it down until they understand it ways those who are 'living' it never will.
Without these people, you might still be 'taking charge' of something, but it would probably just be a poorly sharpened stick, and you'd probably only be 'controlling it' in order to poke it into a bear or something. And the bear would probably kill you for poking it.
You're also flawed in supposing that music, philosophy and all that is inherently good. I'm not saying its bad mind you, its just one mode of life. But suppose through a quirk of evolution a billion years ago, instead of ears and vocal chords the first sentient creature on earth communicated through telepathy. And suppose it never crawled out of the sea. But it still developed into enormously complex and elaborate society. Perhaps not a civilization in the human sense, but what is the human sense other then an arbitrary set of parameters defined by the random chance of evolution?
I guess what I'm saying is don't give humanity too much credit.

I agree with you adam, You can't take anyting for granted.
I hope I die in a way that makes people go "whoa"
That would be an accomplishment.
I just hope it doesn't hurt too much

I feel the same way, whoa is the way to go.
Just remember, pain is temporary and if you get fucked up badly enough your body goes into shock and you don't feel anything.
Well that and there's always morphine

I already know that I'll die in a horifically fucked up way, but I'm ok with that because chances are I'll have a smile on my face.

Cam Lasley, born in 1982, first became interested in music when he played drums in the Junior High School band in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Before long he began writing his own thought provoking lyrics, as rap became his music of choice. In High School, Lasley was dubbed "Laz D" by former classmate, and current Atlanta Hawk, Salim Stoudamire, and the name has stuck. In 2005 he began writing the 14 tracks that make up the debut record "The Man Himself", which in 2006 was produced and recorded by Jack Gibson at the D Compound. The first single "Clean Up the Game" sends edgy, positive messages of anti-violence to the listener, while the follow up "Girlfriend" is an R&B love ballad. Despite having Down syndrome, Laz D hasn't let the disorder deter him from writing and performing music, sending words of encouragement to everyone. Visit www.laz-d.com to purchase the album, watch the video, and find out about D Entertainments newest artist!
