For those of you who live under a rock:

Shootings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia were the cause of 20-22 fatalities early this morning.

Police have released little information on the identities of the victims or the shooter, only saying that the shooter has also been killed.

The first shooting occurred at 7:15 a.m. in a freshman dorm. The other fatalities occurred in an academic building, approximately two hours later. Some of the victims are confirmed as students, though it has not been confirmed whether or not the shooter is a student.

*********************************

The first thing that stands out to me about all this is what it looks like in comparison to the Columbine massacre. 2 teenagers armed to the teeth couldn't do this much damage and yet one guy dumps on a freshman dorm and gets the job done RIGHT.

...kidding.

I don't condone the senseless murder of innocent students but there's a bigger picture here.

It's not just teen angst, folks. It's not just some kid who got his lunch money taken from him one too many times. This is social retribution being exacted by people with no assignable vendetta against the people they kill.

This is lashing out for the sake of lashing out.

...and, it's nothing new.

This shit started in post offices. 'Going postal' was coined and security measures tightened up.

Now, it's spreading to college campuses and games of frisbee golf and beer pong are being disrupted all because someone had to spend their fucking lunch hour waiting at the DMV and then decided to take their frustration out on a few dozen freshmen.

This is a sad day indeed.

The deadliest school shooting in the history of America.

Happy fucking Monday.

It's very typical that some americans - after all that has happened recently - can still think that thier gun laws are alright. What the fuck will it take for people to get it? the last gun massacre that happened here (NZ) was in 1990 at Aramoana and our gun control laws got strict - so much so that it has not happened again in 17 years. on a larger scale, australia went through the port arthur massacre and their gun control laws got strict - and it hasnt happened again. But in the red corner we have the americans who have barely gotten over columbine and the social consequences that came with that and well hey some guy went 'hey im gonna shoot me some people today'. Guns are the problem - if he had walked in there with a fucking steak knife the casulty list would probably sit at... 2 and with a gun...30

You can bring up the whole 'guns don't kill people, people kill people' but guns make it alot fucking easier.

The net result of prohibition is that alcohol use (and abuse) went underground or more accurately it was taken over and controlled by the underworld, mafia, organized crime... and the problem got WORSE!
^^^^^
<Teacher bitch-slaps student back down in his seat>

Now Beav, I want you to insert guns where alcohol was in that statement and re-read it to the rest of the students.

And students, I want you to visualize the possibilities of the new scenario the Beav has presented to you.

how can you NOT blame this on guns? (and nutters who go mad and try to kill a load of people)

if the guy did not have guns he would not have been able to kill 33 people.

How can anyone make an argument against that?

you want to blame something or someone then you have to (should) blame the guy who did it, but that doesn't mean people using this as an example of why guns shouldn't be freely available are wrong....how can it?

--------------------

If some moron gets drunk and falls off a blacony, oor gets behind the wheel and kills someone, is that an example of why alcohol shouldn't be allowed?

Alcohol is far more dangerous than guns in the US, why not ban it?
============================

I know. I know. <raises hand in class room >

It (banning alcohol) has been tried. It didn't work. Google or pick up a good old encyclopaedia and go to Prohibition.

The net result of prohibition is that alcohol use (and abuse) went underground or more accurately it was taken over and controlled by the underworld, mafia, organized crime... and the problem got WORSE!

I don't pretend to have the answer to the guns problem but I disagree with the horribly oversimplified 'just ban them' attitude. I have two co-workers who both belong to gun clubs. These guys are two of the most well balanced and mature men in our plant (factory).

What just happened in Virginia is tragic beyond words. I'm glad that gun-boy (a real man doesn't do shit like this) took himself out too so that American taxpayers do not have to pay to keep him alive in a prison or institution. I am ever hopeful that the things we do here in this life count in some way towards what happens after the death of our physical bodies. (Karma)

Actually, I have no more time to even think about the gun-boy. (Let the experts analyse the fuck out of that.) My thoughts are with the families of the victims. Although no one is completely innocent or a saint, these kids didn't deserve to go out like this.

Seriously. You can mow down a whole lot of people in a car, but no one is screaming "get rid of the cars before someone else gets hurt" when some maniac drives down a sidewalk (and yes, it does happen). So why should this be any different. You're blaming this incident on an inanimate object. The GUY is fucked up, the gun is just there.

"Mass shootings have come to define our nation. Today's shooting at Virginia Tech -- the largest mass shooting in U.S. history -- is only the latest in a continuing series over the past two decades. We allow virtually anyone the means to turn almost any venue into a battlefield. I hate that freaggin QBert game, it makes no sense. Dig n Dug, I don't want to dig up dirt damn it! PitFall, just run the hell out of the jungle and stay away from the pits, or walk around them! Asteroids, none of them seemed to be heading towards earth, why you got to shoot them asshole?!

See what I mean, video games, they are violent, pointless, and cause 20-22 people to get shot methodically at a college in Virginia.

Its a difficult choice. I don't have children (no, not even at MY age) and have no idea if I ever will but I've always wanted to teach them myself - but am also aware of the need for social interaction.
-------

I disagree, Merlina, but only a little. I think that if you raise them to go outside and play once in a while, you can have a little of both worlds. Video games and T.V. taking the place of real parenting is the cause of most of this nonsense. I have friends who were home-schooled, and they have adapted just fine. However, I live in a relatively small town, so I only have THAT perspective on things. In a bigger city, that might not be so easy.

Schools here are closing early because of wind.

That's right, because there's a threat of high winds.

I groaned when years ago they started closing at the chance of snow, despite no snow on the ground. I slapped my head when they closed them because it was cold out. But this? This is just ridiculous.

This generation of kids is going to be so fucking coddled and protected that when something doesn't go their way and is actually hard for them they won't know what to do. Yes, sometimes it gets cold. Yes, sometimes the wind blows. But you deal. You deal and overcome or you suffer.

I worry for the people these kids are going to turn into.

Maybe they won't know what to do and will turn on their brothers and sisters with metal arms.

As for VT, it's a tragedy to be sure.

I'm bracing myself for the flood of candle-holding alumni draped in VT colors that feel as if these events are their cross to bear, as if the blood that was spilled was their own.

32 dead, 21 injured with (apparently) two 9mm handguns. That's better shooting than John Fucking Wayne. Sad that such skill was wasted thus. Guy might've beed formidable in real combat.

It's fucking sickening what some people are capable of.

I'm home schooling my kid.

-------

never

I'd rather take the 1:100000 chance that my kid will get killed in school rather than have him grow up isolated from his peers. All home-schooled kids I've met are socially retarded.

~~~~~
Its a difficult choice. I don't have children (no, not even at MY age) and have no idea if I ever will but I've always wanted to teach them myself - but am also aware of the need for social interaction.
holy shit, in the morning it said 1 dead, 9 wounded...
then 24 dead, 18 wounded...
now it's 32 dead, 21 wounded.
Anyone ever read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult? It's a fascinating book, all about a school shooter and how he came to kill ten of his classmates.
Everyone wants to be famous. A nobody with some guns can make national news.
Wow. How appealing that must seem to some wasted soul with self-image problems?
