As an Aussie I just have to say that I have NEVER heard of a Platypus eating an eagle, hawk, or owl. Or goat, or dog for that matter.
EVER
And also that in my whole life I have seen only two. One in a zoo and the other in a stream, up a mountain, six hours away, before dawn. I think I saw it...

2) I thought the same thing when I read that on the first site about platypuses, but then I kept reading it on all the others as well. The only thing I can think as a reasonable explanation would be that maybe platypuses are prey of the eagles, but the eagles fuck up sometimes. For example, if an eagle decided to get into the burrow for a tasty snack and finds a male...he has that crazy spur, so...That's just my thought.
Actually now that I think about it more, I'm going to have to say that your sources about its diet are completely wrong, but for a different reason: platypii (if thats not the plural form, it should be) have no teeth. In order to eat snakes, rats, eagles, owls, hawks, falcons or anything like that, it would have to have teeth. Theres absolutely no way around it. I mean even if it could catch and kill an eagle (which I still doubt), it would have absolutely no way to eat it.
Wikipedia lists as its main prey: annelid worms and insect larvae, freshwater shrimps, and yabbies (freshwater crayfish). All of those make a lot more sense.
Ah! I just found this quote too: "Natural predators [of the platypus] include snakes, water rats, goannas, hawks, owls and eagles,"
So I think that solves it.
By the way, I wasnt doing all this just to be a jackass and tell you you're wrong; its just once I get curious about something I *have* to figure it out. I would've spent the night dreaming about platypii otherwise.

According to wikipedia there are two eagles in austrialla. The smaller one can kill swan sized animals, the large one can kill a fuckin red kangaroo. Tell me how a playtpus beats either of those birds.
