Today, I quit my job, and it was glorious.
It's the end of an era. No more hotel jobs for Siren. At least for a few years. Let me explain about my horror of a boss, and why I left him swimming in his own shit.
History-
Hygeine:
My boss, Tom, is (was) the most disgusting and repulsive person I've ever met in my life. He is 45 years old and has braces that he constantly scrubs out with a dry toothbrush. Then he leaves the toothbrush on his desk UNCONTAINED for all to see or accidentally touch. Tom always has dry skin that flakes off into his goatee. Tom's office smells like a stomach churning combination of his nasty ass cologne and sausage. Tom wears his pants entirely too high on his hips for a man.
Personality:
Tom talks down to everyone. He yells at his girlfriend's autistic son, grabbing him by the collar and pointing in his face. I've seen it. Tom is a liar. I've caught him in several lies to which he lies again to try and cover up. Tom constantly makes inappropriate comments about his ex-wife. He said once to me, "...she should've thought of that before she let some guy stick his dick in her." I had been working for Tom for 1 week when he said that. He also told me that after they were separated, they lived close to each other so they could have sex with each other while they decided what to do about a divorce. I think I understand why she left him. I bet he also has a tiny tiny penis.
Racism (We all know racism is sometimes funny, but it's currently ammo against my horrible boss):
Tom calls all Asians "Chinese." Tom once told me that he refuses to sell our hotel rooms to Indians because they "stink up our rooms with their food." When someone makes a statement about someone who is stupid or ill equipped, he asks, "Is he black?" Like, if I said, "Man that person at Burger King was slow as molasses," he will undoubtedly respond with, "Was he black?" Tom is confident that "Jews" will pay anything for a wedding block at our hotel because they have all that money saved up. He's just an ignorant bastard.
Education:
None. Tom says it's his parents' fault he didn't go to college. They didn't keep him in a private school past the 10th grade, so he didn't get a good enough education to get into any colleges. Yeah, ok... only people who go to private schools get admitted to college. Tom LOVES to bring up how he's been in "the business," meaning hotel, for 23 years. Loves it. Loves to say that he's had connections in every major city in the US and that he is "The King of Baltimore" and was formerly "The King of Las Vegas." Umm... he works in one of the smallest hotels in Baltimore, and only makes about 10k more than I do. Or, did.
Personal attacks:
I told him in January that I would be leaving to have my baby at the end of April. He promptly told me that I would not have a job when I came back. He said it with rage and without even blinking. Legally, he was ok. I won't be with the hotel for 12 months yet. Still, it was a jerk thing to say. He then went on about how he would not tolerate being in the office by himself and he'd rather put in his resignation. He said it was situations like these that contributed directly to his health problems. He told me these things as if I cared, and as if that was going to change my mind. From that day, I've been wishing a heart attack on him.
And we're up to speed.
Tom took yesterday off, so, he came in today and interrogated me about something that happened over the weekend. It was a minor misunderstanding that was nobody's fault, hurt nothing, and really was no problem at all. He wouldn't let it drop, and kept pushing and pushing for me to say it was I who made the mistake. At one point he pulled a chair up to my desk and stared at me for about a minute before actually speaking. Then, he said, "Why won't you just fess up? Nobody wants to fess up about this!!!" He then proceeded to go on a rampage looking through my files and spouting off about how I wasn't doing my job and blah, blah, blah. None of this was true, he was just yelling to yell. It's not even like he was going to get in trouble for something so he was passing off the blame... he was just yelling to yell. There was no harm done to anyone at any time... he was just yelling to yell. I did my job perfectly, down to every detail, yet he was yelling just to yell.
When I wouldn't admit to anything, and I told him I didn't know how it got mixed up, he went to our General Manager's office to yell at him about it and try to get him to confess. At that time, I called my husband and asked him if it was alright to quit. He said, "Do it." So, I did it.
Tom was still in the manager's office when I collected my things. I could still here him through the closed door, bitching and whining like a little whore when I got my keys from valet. The door was still closed as I explained to another manager that I was leaving and never coming back. I got in my car, and I drove away.
As I was driving home, Tom left a message on my cell phone. It simply said, "Are you mad? Please call me back so we can talk about this... please." It was in the whiniest wimpiest voice I've ever heard from a man. I erased it immediately and never looked back.
MS word was left open on my desktop, important documents unfinished. Catering and audio visual equipment still needs to be ordered for meetings for the next month. And Tom has NO idea how to do any of that. So, now he's in over his head. I wonder if he even knows our caterers phone number.
Did I overreact? Maybe, but I don't care. This was not the first time he had tried to bully me into submission. I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant, and was leaving next week anyway. I REALLY didn't feel like putting up with another minute of his bullshit. But now Tom is screwed. I left him with a pile of things I was going to finish as a courtesy before I left.
Fuck Tom. I hope he continues to get what he deserves.

Auto +2 quitting a hotel job. I was office manager for a hotel attraction; I lasted 2 years and have been content in my subsequent non-hotel job for the past 5 years now.
Also, not solely for the purpose of being vindictive, but out of fairness to other employees and guests- if I were you, I'd have a conversation with HR about his racist/otherwise inappropriate comments. They surely don't seem to have been isolated or misconstrued.

I lived in a tourist town that has a population of 4500 and gets over 1.5 millions tourists a yeaer. Everyone I know works in the hotel/tourist/service industry. I know the industry well(both parents worked for them, including one being the maintenance manager for 3 large hotels) I wouldn't want most of the jobs, so I don't blame you quitting at all.
