"You going to pick up comics today? It's Wednesday."
Years of life create unto a person a state of wisdom. Yet we all grow in this wisdom and in its mists are left behind desires. Not just desires in the sense of urges, in the sense of lusts and wants. Desires in the sense of those grand dreams that you gave up from your
youth. For some it was plans of grandeur, becoming powerful politicians, or beautiful actresses, or popular rock stars. For the grand majority of us, these dreams are forgotten for another passion we find in life, one that offers stability and security. With that question, I realized that I feared this path of drudgery.
It was true, I had made something of a habit of picking up comic books on Wednesdays, since that's the day they came out here in NY. His question was justified in its reasoning, and he meant no maliciousness by it, but I felt disgusted with my life at that very moment. I looked at him, a good friend of mine indeed, not a rat like his name would imply.
"To hell with comics. It's time to go."
I was prone to my own megalomania and these grand plans I came up with from time to time were often left as just plans. I knew right away that he wouldn't be the one for this trip, this chance to be free. We were on track to graduate in a few months, and I'd been slowly realizing that grad school was not the viable option for me. I'm sure I sounded crazy with that kind-off sentence to him, and before he could ask me what that random combination of grammatically correct words actually meant, I wandered off to one of the labs.
I can't remember which lab I headed too, but I do remember my German roommate on the phone. He was speaking in the tongue of the Fatherland when it all came together. I turned around and jogged back to my apartment. I grabbed my backpack, stuffed 2 pairs of clothes in it, a journal, some pens, and the wad of cash I kept in my room. Looking around, I wondered for a brief moment if I would regret this. I smiled and new that it was those words of German that reminded me what I had to do. I thought about grabbing my laptop, but decided instead to pick up my digital camera. There was a moment of hesitation, I had to leave a note, tell somebody. I grabbed a marker from desk and crossed out all the lists of grad schools and jobs on my white board leaving the only clue for any one who was going to worry.
Wanderjahr.
