There's a link to the article, but the jist of it is Wal-Mart is recruiting former government and military intelligence personel for it's own "intelligence gathering operations". Uh, kind of fucking weird, Wal-Mart. Kind of fucking weird.

Seen it. I'm not freaking out about it. It doesn't surprise me in the least. The question is, how much more will it take, how far will it have to go until people actually DO give it the attention it deserves and start to connect the dots with everything else going on? And by then, will it be too little too late?
If you truly want a head trip about data mining and corporate intelligence, look into the corprations whose sole business is data mining and check out some of the tidbits of information they have on all of us. How about the companies people reference in background checks and credit checks. They have enough information to completely erase your ass from existence. POOF.
Welcome to 1984. Smile for the security cameras.

I'm not sure this really MEANS anything.
So Wal-Mart is hiring some pretty covert individuals to do some sleuthing.
As far as I know, anyone can pay to hire a private eye. I don't see the harm here.

Who would you rather have doing market research some snot nosed punk kid who wanted to try out all the clever theories they came up with in business "school" or someone who would slit the throats of your competitors to get inside info.

This is indeed true, they have advance personnel scout out future Wal-Mart locations, and then identify possible combatants, and then take steps to neutralize them.
