For all you Americans out there, prepare to get your learn on.
ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) day is annually celebrated on the 25th of April.
ANZAC day has been celebrated since 1981, when the film 'Gallipoli' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082432/) was released, starring Mel Gibson.
The film Gallipoli recreated the landings of Australian, New Zealand and British troops on the Gallipoli penisula in Turkey in 1915.
The Gallipoli campaign is notorious because of a series of bungled heirarchical decisions that led to the Australian troops reaching land in extremely steep, well fortified terrain as opposed to smooth, sweeping beaches as was originally intended. While many Australians still hold animosity towards the British, who landed in perfect conditions while we were being shot to shit, the truth is far more British lives were lost in this campaign than Australian.
The Gallipoli campaign is an iconic part of the Australian psyche for a number of reasons. Many Australians see it as our "Defining battle" even though it was an unmitigated failure that cost thousands of Australian lives and did not even satisfy its basic objectives.
Perhaps the greatest success of the campaign (and one that represents the whole thing nicely) was the retreat, where Australians built basic machines that gradually filled with water so as to fire mounted rifles, so that the weapons would go off throughout the night and the Turks would not be aware of a reduction in troop numbers until we were all gone. During the retreat, the ANZACS did not suffer a single casualty.
The reason Aussies consider it so important is because it reinforces a number of quintessentially Australian ideas, including:
1. Our distrust in our leadership and their ability to provide for the "Average bloke"s needs.
2. Our ability to band together and laugh and what is otherwise a horrid situation
3. The idea of 'mateship', whereby your friends are more important than you.
One further aspect of ANZAC day is its inherent mistrust for the people of Israel. Since Mel Gibson starred in Gallipoli in 1981, it has become clear that the Jews were, at least in part, responsible for the botched landings. Joodoo curses have also been attributed to the ANZACs ridiculous bad luck in the abortive campaign.
Now, every ANZAC day, Australians remember their war dead. This means all war dead, not just the ANZACs. The rememberance itself is as follows.
Dawn services are held throughout Australia. At around 4.30am, many people get up and watch the sun rise while the "last post", a haunting military trumpet/bugle tune is played. Many Australians then drink 2 shots of soy sauce, representing the bitter taste of war.
Attacks on Jewish businesses are common this day, but generally the ANZAC spirit is one of contemplation, mourning, hope and gratitude.

Actually no the reason there is animosity is that the british troops were busy drinking fucking tea when they were meant to be firing artillery and many lives were lost due to their incompetence and lack of ability to stick to a plan.

Y'know a kiwi contingent actually made the crest. When they telegraphed back that they were on the top of the Dardenelles the ship gunners decided that that was impossible, therefore the message must be a hoax or enemy misinformation, and shelled the reported position.
Cunts.

Was any-one else forced to watch Gallipoli in year ten? I tried to make ANZAC bikkies today with my daughter but they burnt and no shops were open so I couldn't even be slack and buy some and pretend we cooked them.
