Jessica Lynch testified in front of Congress yesterday.
For those of you who don't remember, she was a private in the Army who was captured and badly wounded when her convoy was ambushed in Iraq. The hospital where she was being kept was raided, and she was recovered. She famously said the words "I'm a soldier too" to the soldier who found her.
She was paraded up and down as a hero, with stories about how she fired her rifle until it was exhausted. She was on talk shows, magazine covers, and people wanted to buy her story for TV movies.
Except that none of what we were told happened really happened in the way that it was painted for us. For one thing, she never even fired her rifle, because it jammed.
So why is she a hero then?
Well, how easy would it be to have the free ride for life that the government was trying to give her? Would you be able to turn down being the face of Iraq heroism? The cash from book deals, movies, and speaking engagements? The easy employment you'd be able to get?
She did. She's out there actively trying to debunk the myths created by the Bush administration to put a positive spin on what's happening over there in the middle east.
To quote what she said to Congress:
"The bottom line is the American people are capable of determining their own ideals of heroes and they don't need to be told elaborate tales"

She didnt really single handedly kill the taliban, capture bin laden and free the Iraqi people? Fuck.
At least she has morals. Me, I woulda taken the government for all its worth and tell them if they didnt give me a million a year tax free for life, and never have to pay taxes again, Id take my story to the press. They couldnt really try to come out and say I was nuts, cause they backed me to begin with.
Thats what I would have done.

She got a big $$$$$$$ book deal, she's no hero, she just used her 15 minutes of fame already and is intent on getting another.

Yup. This si generally called double dipping, and it's hardly some great ethical move on her part.

I agree with your general sentiment. And forgive me if I'm slightly off topic, but I'm curious as to why people, at least it seems on ubersite, aren't angrier about the Pat Tillman case. His family is trying to expose the lies propagated by his superiors and the government- the ones used to paint a heroic war story for the media, yet there are cries of "STFU" in what seems to me like a kneejerk reaction to the fact that he was famous.
Should these questionable cases be investigated in general? Absolutely. Should he receive special treatment or praise or be lauded as more of a hero than anyone else? No. And isn't this the same issue Jessica is trying to raise? Any soldier whose experience was rewritten to serve the needs of those in power deserve for the real story to be told. So even if Tillman's case is being overshadowed by his fame and there are possibly many soldiers' cases who will not receive their fair attention, isn't it a necessary evil to bring light to the twisted truths and downright fabrications that arediscovered? In the end, wouldn't the truth honor ALL of the fallen soldiers?

Sports Illustrated ran an article on Pat Tillman sometime last year, and in it they explored the fact that we were told that her rescue was one of great heroism and sacrifice, when in reality the Iraqis had abandoned the hospital long before and left Lynch there to be found.

I think she made the perfect choices...
Instead of getting paid by the gov't for life, she chose to take the book deal...and after she was guaranteed money, she decided to fuck over the gov't for all the shit they've pulled using her as the backdrop.

A hero? How about an ignorant bitch (not to mention ugly as fuck) that didn't capitalize on opportunity. Take your morals and shove em up your ass.

Didn't capatilize?
She had a million dollar book deal.
I am not judging her for it, I would have done the same, but she has profited from the govts spin on her story and she is soaking up the lime light now which is also lining her pocket.

I spoke at length last night at a restaurant with an Air Force member who was in Iraq during the initial occupation of Baghdad and suffered severe injuries from a combination of being shot, and from having his vehicle rolled multiple times after being hit by a 10,000lb IED.
In short, he said that the real reason the USA military was deployed to Iraq (and are still there) is to finish what Bush Sr. started and left unfinished during his four year term. No more, no less.
Plus it was really cool to see his wrist pop and distort from the bullet wound. He's ready to go back over and fight again as soon as he get medical clearance.

How about links to how 'the story' wasn't true and what really happened.
How about links to what specifically she's doing to 'debunk' Bush.
How about info on anything other than, no it didn't really happen that way but yes she got the book deal.

Unfortunately, "does it matter?" is a necessary question.
Because what will really come from this and from the Pat Tillman situation?
The international audience will pay attenion, and remember, and Americans will probably just continue to be all 'aw shucks' about the war and 'the slip-ups that happen from time to time.' At this point you're either for the troop withdrawal and have been from the start or you've been 'aw shuck'ing your way to the beat of the government drum anyway.
What I don't want to see is doubt cast on actual heroes. It would be a shame if men and women who did perform heroic acts on the battlefield are scrutinized.
