You're right to question, Dalai, but I suggest you also take a class in statistics. There are very good reasons to accept that a sample of 1,000 are representative of a population of 3,000,000, provided the data are collected honestly (which can mean lots of things).

This whole survey is nonsense. There is no way that 300 people is representative of nearly 300 million.

There's also, however, the very real possibility that reported results are the product of statistical shenanigans. Easy to do. But I wouldn't argue against a trick unless you know the solution.

Also, a big no-no is over-reacting when the results don't reflect kindly on you or your position. You'll lose all credibility.

Can't trust those damned scientists. True. Can't trust those Christians, either. Can't trust anybody. Best drink a beer.

The opinions of 1,000 people are supposed to reflect that of 3,000,000? Surveys, statistics, and other related propoganda devices are such drivel. Why is it that when people hear a number and "percent" followed by "of", they tend to believe it and adjust their opinions accordingly?

this problem is a lot more likely to get solved if people take responsability collectively and individually than if they just throw it in the hands of politicans who will just play political games with it.

==============================================

yes, you're right. every person in the US should have special intuition powers when it comes to choosing politicians. or better yet, we could just get rid of them altogether and live in an anarchy! that would totally solve that problem!

do you honestly expect 300 million people to all have the same amazing cognitive abilities that you believe you possess?

what i was trying to say hidden, you Lisa rapist :-D, is that if you are so prone to generalize, why can't we?

if people are gonna label muslims based on a tiny irrelevant percentage, why can't we say you, as one entity, wanted war with a large majority?

=============================================================

because generalization creates disdain for a large group of people BY a large group of people over time. i have no desire to be lumped into a category with Bush supporters and war mongers.

and stop crying like a baby. the only thing Americans generalize about Canada is that you all like to drink Molsen at hockey games, you have mounted police, and say "ay" and "aboot". actually, that's stereotyping and is a little different than generalizing, but still kinda the same.

I was thinking lastnight that if we do suffer some huge economic crash it's not like the third world will suffer or be any less off.

Westernized areas will for sure, so out of maybe a billion or two we could survive a deathwave of say 3/4 of a billion. The ones that make it will settle the planet again and probably do it all over again with a new set of characters and liars.

One of them brought up night fighting, and how it seemed like a video game since all he would see was a green blob, and then when he shot, the blob would just stop moving and how surreal it was to be fighting like in a video game.

Why do you think every American believed in the war? Initial support of the war was around 75-80%, not 100%.

Anyone who took the time to look into Iraq would have realized that sectarian violence was the most probable result of destabilizing Saddam. Nation breaking and building doesnt occur "in a matter of weeks" as Rumsfeld said.

hidden's point is just as good--why does the ROW (rest of the world) lay blame on every single American for this war? It's not like Momma Bucktooth with her sixteen kids standing in line at WalMart and thinking about a bucket of chicken had any influence on the situation.

why do americans want us to be nice and courteous and comprehensive when they shit on entire populations who doesn't suck their collective dick?

the insults i get based on my first language back in 2003 are a good example of why they don't deserve the favor of not all putting them in the same basket

hidden's point is just as good--why does the ROW (rest of the world) lay blame on every single American for this war? It's not like Momma Bucktooth with her sixteen kids standing in line at WalMart and thinking about a bucket of chicken had any influence on the situation.

It's not like this mess is her fault.

But the world would probably be a better place if she got hit by a 757, right in the face.

At the beginning it was a truly good and noble start to the war. I remember the CNN footage of a few thousand tanks and what not that were all lined up ready to dive in. I love how the attack line is called the 'start line' like, ready, set go, and all of a sudden you're in a war zone where you can shoot as many babies as you like and claim it was accidental.

Fucking heroic!

"are you saying that because 3000 americans died two years before, it justifies full out war?"

NO

i know english is not your first language, but goddamn.... READING COMPREHENSION. try reading it again and making sure you understand what i am saying before you conceive any more hasty responses. like i said a thousand times already- i have been opposed to going to Iraq since it was proposed and i still am. nothing justifies going to Iraq and if there honestly is a perfectly good reason to go there, the public should know about it. currently, there is no valid justification for going there. the information presented to us was false and was meant to mislead. i knew that all along.

and stop using the word "you" when referring to millions of people i don't agree with. i had nothing to do with this war being waged. i did not fight in it. i got out of the military before they deployed me there. i went there to help save lives indiscriminately and learn more about what was happening there and i accomplished both goals.

i mean...who cares...it's true, the build-up to the invasion was exciting to me as well and it was like watching sports. EVERYBODY, that includes me, was rooting and screaming for their sides like morons. tensions were high. then BOOM! "hey...wtf, it's real!?"

Caul is right, anyone that actually believed a single word of the entire WMD, yellowcake, aluminum tube circus fucking sideshow, even for just a second, is blind. Totally blind.

It was so painfully obvious were this illegal war was going to end up, exactly where every other imperial campaign does--brutal quagmire.

So now you all get to suck on it.

i'm not on a high horse. i'm not telling you, you are all retards and i'm better.

what i'm doing here is defending Bush. yes, that's what i'm doing. because he gave you your war and now you spit on him. at least stick with it and clean up the mess you started.

all i'm asking is that ONE american out there admits he wanted this war in 2003, and that he's ready to live up to his choice.

*cue claims that i'm defending my internet girlfriend*

Caul, you sound like a magnificent idiot, you know that? you know NOTHING about the US and you prove that over and over again with your ridiculous, unfounded assertions and assumptions.

i'll bet it feels pretty easy to critisize a country like the US when your country won't get involved in any international affairs whatsoever because it's the easy route. why don't you ponder this for a moment- your hometown is destroyed by terrorists. many people you know have died including a couple family members. the terrorists send a message to taunt everyone and let them know who carried out the attack. you have the sympathy and outrage of your countrymen. everyone wants revenge. it's human nature. someone punches you in the face, you punch back.

most Americans were too blinded by anger and pain to rationally think this war through. you may not understand that, but i do. i can't say i'm too happy about it, but what's done is done. now most Americans are kicking themselves and saying "if only we would have not let our anger cloud our judgement and allow us to be manipulated...". i said my piece at the beginning, before the war, and still stand firm to this day- the Iraq war is all lies and deception. it's an umbrella for the motives of this administration that will never be made public. i don't know what is going on, exactly, but we most certainly aren't in Iraq to liberate anyone. anyone with an IQ above 100 can figure that shit out for themselves. just like using "WMDs" as a buzzword because of it's ambiguity.

you may now dismount your high horse and take your foot out of your mouth.

36% of Americans believe victory in Iraq can be achieved

36% of the survey surely............

________________________________________________________

And this is only a sample of the sheer fucking ignorance on display here.

Listen up people, this is Stats 101.

When we are unable to measure a characteristic of a population, we measure the characterstic of a SAMPLE, and then develop a CONFIDENCE INTERVAL that what we have learned from the sample is true of the population.

What makes a good sample? Well first, the sample has to be UNBIASED which is achieved by taking the sample from the population at RANDOM.

Then the sample has to be LARGE. Note, large means large enough to display statistical trends, it does not mean a large portion of the population. Any sample size over thirty will do, although with a large, hetereogenous population you will want a larger sample to ensure the the sample is unbiased.

When applying the results of the sample study back to the population we apply STANDARD DEVIATIONS to the NORMAL DISTRIBUTION to allow us to make statements like : "We are 95% confidant that the true MEAN of the population is between x% and z%, given that the mean of the sample was y%."

So the headline should read "We can say with 99% confidence that between 26% and 46% of Americans are so stupid they actually believe we can make this invasion work, despite ignoring all of Machiavelli's pre-conditions for the successful occupation of a foreign country. And we can say with 99.9% confidence that between 95% and 99% of Uberers couldn't tell a normal distribution from a chi-squared test. Nor their arse from their elbow."

I remember a time on uber when I said the US will lose this war hands down and for the next three months I had nothing but hate emails and nasty -2's.

Now here we are a few years later and it's the yanks saying 'the US will lose this war hands down.'

Big surprise. Not to be overly offensive here, but did the US ever stand for anything? The more I think on it, Give us your tired is more poetry than substance. More propaganda than creed.

I don't give a flying fuck about america--you're all too full on prescription meds, McDonalds, shitty pop culture and gunpowder to ever think for yourselves--It makes me sick inside when I think of your country, as useless as it is, and as armed to the teeth as it is.

Getting to the point (because anti american sentiment will get me a free pass to gitmo) I think what the US needs is a 'gunday' you know--on monday every household with firearms should make sure to send their kids to school with some loaded weapons, all the kids will be instructed by the teacher to shoot any other students they might see (including themselves but only with their last bullet), when the final bell rings I'm sure all the dead kids and bloody classrooms would serve as a very effective visual lesson on violence, stupidity and the consequences of getting into situations that should never be gotten into.

Good idea for sure, but history proves that there's nothing more enticing to a yankee idiot than a hopeless, savage situation in a country 'begging' for american styled freedom. Who can resist?

On a side note, writing 'freedom' next to 'american' makes me want to throw up on your flag.

Not sorry.

Victory over WHAT?
----------------------------

I'm shocked that with all the news about the war in Iraq that you don't know what's going on. Brief summary:

After the capture (and eventual hanging) of Saddamm Hussein, Iraq's brutal former dictator, a power vaccuum left by his removal from power has opened the way for anyone with a gun and a following to take the reigns. This is unacceptable for two reasons: one, because the average Iraqi citizen does not abide by nor should they be forced to live under such oppression, and two, because a stable democracy in the Middle East would benefit the entire world in innumerable ways.

However, establishing said democracy is exceedingly difficult in that region. The reason for that is that the nation of Iraq is comprised primarily of three major sects of the religion of Islam: the Sunnis, the Shiites, and the Kurds. Each group decrees that if a new government is set up in Iraq, they should be the ones to have complete control and religious authority with respect to said government. That sounds like a fair trade, but each group's interpretation of the "true" moral code of Islam is different, and so no one group will conced full power to another.

The United States, and its allies, are attempting to facilitate the integration of the three sects. Meanwhile, another presence in the area is disrupting those efforts: several terrorist groups, most notably Al Quaeda (spelling varies). Oddly, though terrorists number only several thousand among a population of 29 million, the capacity of a handful of people to cause huge civil disruption is very great when you factor in that they hold the civilian population of their own country to have no value whatsoever.

In conclusion, when individuals speak of "victory" in Iraq, they are referring first and foremost to the establishment of a free and STABLE democratic government in that country, because a stable form of government would prove to be the ultimate defeat for the aforementioned terrorist groups.

Now you know! Unless you were simply attempting to be sarcastic with your "Victory over what" comment, in which case I would submit to you that attempting sardonic wittiness by employing uninformed-sounding one-line quips based on polling that is half-assed at best is no way to get a point across.

No, I thought you may have been quoting it in the semi-sarcastic *finger inverted-commas* way, which would have been ridiculous when it's a completely black and white issue, when it comes to what was told to the public.
===
it's not black and white. if the public had been so obviously lied to, heads would've been cut off.
the public wanted to believe this. the nuance is...it's not the governments fault, it's ours collectivly for being so gullible.

i clearly remember when a reporter asked Rumsfield "sir, you lied to the population...what are you gonna do about it?" he bluntly retorted was "what are YOU gonna do about it?"

we will all miss donald.
----------

It's not black and white in the sense that no-one can prove Bush and the rest knowingly misled the public, though it can come pretty close. It is black and white though in the sense that what came out of their mouths didn't come close to the truth - this is what the public had access to, and it was presented as established fact.

"if the public had been so obviously lied to, heads would've been cut off." Now you're the naive one. How do you explain the election results then, unless the majority of the public has actually adopted your idea that they are responsible because they were gullible, and have therefore decided to let the politicians responsible for exploiting their gullibility off the hook?
