Don't fret over the massacre. Honestly, it's pretty much the least of the ridiculous bullshit unleashed by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young upon the world.

Ok, I take back what I said in the previous message. I was thinking it was mistaken Identity, and that would have held true with the first attack, but I went back and read further. The immigrants surrendered and were split into 3 groups. Youngest and a few mothers in first group, more women and older children in second group... 3rd group... just men.... after they had marched far enough so that each group didnt know what was going on.. the second and third groups were shot. Wow. I'm upset that I never heard of this. WTF! It was hard for me to swallow the whole black thing, them not being able to hold leadership positions until the 70's but this is aloud wrong. and that fact that its not talked about in my religion now makes it look like its covered up and not talked about, makes it worse.

Well, I did look up the facts, and yes the story is legit. I do not think what was done was right by any means what so ever, but to keep it with in context, if you look up Mormon history from an unbiased point of view, they had been persecuted in every state that the immigrated to. My opinion is that they felt that these people had been a threat, because prior to the incidence the United States were suppose to be sending the Army over to wipe out the settlement. They had just traveled 4 months, on foot, to escape persecution. They left behind all their belongings and many died on the way to Utah. And prior to leaving the leaders of the church are murdered. Now that reach Utah and are just trying to live there life out in the wilderness, the United States declares War on them. I think the response by B. Young was inappropriate and unethical. And a disgrace to the religion, leaving me much to think about. However, I think it boils down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time unfortunately.
+2 for being nice, and also for making me think today.

I'm glad I read this, because it was all news to me (I knew some bits and pieces of Jap cruelty during WWII but nothing like that), but part of me would rather not have known any of that.

There are these places in almost every city and town, full of books, and if you go and ask nicely you can borrow them at no charge and learn stuff. NO SHIT! I am not making this up. They are called 'liberties' or something like that.

This is really weird.
I've been having a bit of insomnia lately. So last night, there was a documentary on Mormons on PBS. I figured if that doesn't put my to sleep, nothing will. The massacre thing was the last thing that I remember before I zonked.

Jeezus, do you get off on being a buzzkill.
It's all too easy to read about/see pictures of all the tragedies that humanity has commited upon itself. There is absolutely nothing new or suprising about genocide. The suprising thing is when people who have lived through many such horrendous events find the strength to carry on and rebuild.
I highly doubt that you have ever experienced anything remotely similiar to this, otherwise you wouldn't be splashing it about for all to see.
I, on the other hand, have seen a great deal of the darker aspects of humanity. There is little to be gained by morbidly staring at such things.
I very rarely say this, but, please, STFU...like, now.

I think you are wrong. There is plenty to be gained by staring things in the face. Knowledge, for one. Don't act like you have some unique claim on having seen "the darker aspects of humanity" either. You have no clue what anyone on an anonymous internet forum as been through or witnessed, so to act as though you have some sort of superior insight is laughable.

True dat.
For example, I sit next to a guy called Adolf, cunt claims to have seen all sorts of weird shit. Mostly involving jews.
Who knows if he is telling the truth or not, who knows if I have seen worse things than him?

Oh, you got me Sherlock. I have never participated in a massacre/genocide. I'm just one of those idiots who thinks the past (both the good and the bad) should be remembered every now and again.
For the record, watching your sister cut herself "just to take away the pain" doesn't constitute the "darker aspects of humanity".

Having seen way more cruelty than most should myself, I disagree. sometimes humanity needs to have it's nose rubbed in its own poo. People forget everything too quick.

Fucking Jews, stealing all the glory. I went out drinking with a Bosnian friend the day Yeltsin died, it was really strange.
