Inspired by Chaos Jester's post... http://www.ubersite.com/m/101225
_________________________

As Generation X moves kicking & screaming into its late 20's and early 30's, we take with us some of the subcultures we helped to create or define. The youth behind us have taken these divisions and ran with them, making the life styles bolder and even less traditional; and of course, therefore more marketable.

Trends are always going to exist, hip ideas that people follow to fit in somewhere and feel a part of something larger than themselves. Subculture ideals are almost religious in that regard, it gives back to the individual something to feel involved in. They feel as if they can find their uniqueness through a diversity than has been carefully constructed. However, this narrow field of type actually puts limits on the concept of self-actualization, preferring that its members hold up to a certain "standard" in various realms of tastes.

In the book "Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic" by Robert Lanham, the author takes a satirical look at dozens of different subcultures that populate the American landscape. He has quirky names he has given to each 'tribe' and skews them in an anthropological fashion. Without his vast research material at hand, I thought I would simply go over the four main subcultures that I personally come across on a daily basis and my reaction to them.

THE GOTH - A trend that started back in the early 1980's, it was originally an attempt to recall a stylized romance of centuries prior. Based upon the interpretation of past and new literature, a kind of darkness crept into the group, the concepts of Love & Death intertwined. Brooding and miserable, Goths infiltrated all the major areas effecting trend including fashion and music, coming back around to further have a new impact on literature. As years have past, the Goth Movement has splintered off into various factions, from the original romanticized to a more industrial neophyte or to a pagan-based metal oxymoron.

I can see why the Goth scene can have its attraction to many youth and young adults. There is certainly a sense of 'community' among them, a quickly recognizably quality that they share. Goth's are bonded in mutual self-perceived pain, the glass always half empty. And while much of their trends I find acceptable, I suppose I've always been just too optimistic to be one. I can't see wallowing in negativity on purpose, let alone surrounding yourself with others that do the same.

THE PUNK - Shouting and throwing fists all the way back from the 1970's, this group began almost simultaneously in London with the "Sex Pistols" and in New York with "The Ramones." Oh, and Iggy Pop was running around there somewhere, too. They were the voices of a disenfranchised underclass, a subculture of youth who didn't like what they were seeing from the parents' actions. Centered around obscenities and the occasional fight, the Punks were both apathetic and anarchists at the same time, depending on the question or what time of day. Liberty 'Hawks spiked high, they've been around around for so long now that the grandkids are making the new music on sellout tours with financial backing by Miller Lite.

The Punks are all about rage, a rebellion that leads back to the old quote "Whadya Got?" It's all about upsetting the Status Quo and questioning authority, something I can get behind. However, the generally uneducated way of going about these things, the methods the Punks would implement, are woefully inadequate. And most of the time they're too busy fighting each other. The movement has been in existence for so long that it's become mainstream hip, last year's Warped Tour the highest grossing concert festival in America. To be honest, most of the elder statesmen of the group are cashing in as well, leaving the last few hold outs to weep outside a boarded up CBGB.

THE EMO - The Sensitive Ones. The bizarre combination of Punk, Goth, Metal and Marketing. The Emo is the latest of the subculture groups to spring up, the bastard hybrid of various others, still trying to find its face. More recognizable for its fashion than its music (which is often hard to truly categorize), Emo has its look squarely set. It has a certain style of hair, makeup and clothing; often these items indistinguishable between male and female practitioners. Already the group has begun to split apart and the term "Emo" becoming a dirty word to even those who clearly are of that persuasion.

Their was Emo music over a decade ago. Back then it was good; before it was called Emo. Then marketing reps got a hold of it, Hot Topics filled every mall and pop versions of it blasted on every radio station. In this media driven instant age, the movement never really was one, just a simple instance of a manufactured trend. The Emo subculture in primarily geared towards suburban white kids with disposable income, elements of it saturated into any aspect they desire. There are a few bands that fall into the dreaded Emo category that I don't mind, but god forbid I want a tee shirt with their logo on it; I can only find them in waif sizes.

THE HIPPIE - The aging Baby-Boomers left one lasting impression upon their kids and grandkids, and that was one of fashion and music. A throwback to the late 1960's, the "New" Hippies have been rejuvenated in the last decade with the digital age and such bands as Dave Matthews and Phish. Less human rights concerned except for an occasional war rally, this breed are more Eco-Centric; save the planet and eat Vegan. Knocking a hacky sack around while passing a joint, they wear the same colorful clothing as their ancestors and debate endlessly about political affairs that don't actually effect them. Many have taken to such earth-based faiths as Wicca and wear their hair in dreadlocks, the rich scent of patchulli surrounding them.

They mean well, they really do. However, the New Hippies have all the world provided to them and it's easy to be outraged when scrolling the internet for global atrocities. Many of these group get the urge to belong to this subculture through a sense of heritage; founded or not. And it's a much simpler time for them now when there's no draft or riots and the parents' credit card is paying for the loft apartment. Unfortunately, even with the spirit of that bygone era, this group lacks the struggle. And personally, I love read meat. And I like to take showers.

SO... I suppose I understand these groups a bit, their needs and their followers. I, myself, have never wanted to be defined like that, never wanted to be so easily placed into a category. I listen to all types of music, read all types of literature, wear clothing that I find comfortable and suitable for all occasions. My ears have been pierced for a decade and the eyebrow ring I got after I left a job I held for years, stuck in a tie. Hell, I only shave my head because my hair is so thick it pisses me off to mess with it. The closest I ever got to a subculture was when I was in High School back in the mid 1990's and wore flannel, but even then, I couldn't really stand Nirvana.

I'll continue to listen to Peter Gabriel as I edit this and tonight I'll throw on a pair of jeans with a tee shirt and my black suit jacket over top if it's cold. I'll go to my favorite bar that serves all these types on a regular basis and hear The Clash, followed by Bloc Party then Faith No More, rounded out by Johnny Cash. I'll sit back with some friends and watch as the Goths stroll past a table of Punks who are making fun of the Emos buying some pot off the Hippies...

... and everything will be just fine.

Do they still call people in their 20's "Generation X"? Is there one "Generation X", or is everyone who goes through this period considered "Generation X"? They were using this term a lot in the 80's to describe the children of baby-boomers. The first usage of it that I know of was in the 60's; it was the title of a book about the Mod subculture.

You left out two of the biggest GenX subcategories: The Grunger and The Metrosexual. The Grungers are on the endangered species list, and most metro's are now coming out of the closet.

Ah, Kaos-King, you never cease to be a breath of fresh air.

You, Drogo and Fey are definately my favorite three Uber-cats (but HurtByTheSun is getting up there and, despite all the heat, Kurfsec has potential if she would start posting stuff with actual content)

I'd like to say that I agree whole-heartedly with just about everything on the post/reviews. I, myself, chose to mingle with the Goths because I just feel at home with all the beautifully ugly people and I've always had a blast hangin' around them. Now, that being said, I definately understand how so many people see the goth sub-culture as something for immature Emo-fucktards with too much time/money on their hands, 'cause there sure a lot of examples to choose from. Still, I've met some really, really interesting people in those dark niches where the eldritch-lovers gather and those places just feel so much safer and closer than all the other scenes.
...
But, then again, perhaps that's just me.

and then as soon as they start to whine and become too emotional.....

But there is a slight problem.....

Actually, it's pretty bad in Ohio. There are a bunch of immature 20-somethings mentally stuck in high school and college. But yeah, I'd guess that most relatively normal people leave their cliques behind when they abandon high school for grown-up land.

Crystle - - Oohhh, good luck on all that hon!

Pen Name - - Perhaps at one time they were "Counter," but as Juls so perfectly put, now they're so marketed that they're more simply "Sub." You raise an interesting point, however! Is there anything that is TRULY counterculture anymore???

Lisa - - Do you really think so? I see a lot of different types of people that fall into these groups here around the University and up in Cleveland. Granted, I think most people "grow out of it," but I believe it last longer for many past High School.

a) Auto +2 BC reference.

b) I have to read this book. Is it difficult to find?

c) Warped Tour last year was the most watered down power pop event I have ever seen. Despite the likes of NOFX, The Casualties, Joan Jett, and The Buzzcocks, bands like Thursday, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and AFI more than crushed the good vibe. This year looks to be much, much better with bands like Bad Religion and Flogging Molly.

Juls - - You freakin' rule all over my face.

I pretty much agree with what you're saying, at least from a contemporary view point. When you can buy a "Nevermind The Bullocks" plastic lunchbox or a wunzzie for your infant with The Ramones logo on it, there's an issue that needs addressed. Like I said, Warped Tour was the highest selling concert festival last summer. WTF? But I think it's because a lot of those Punks, Goths and Hippies have growm up and "sold-out" and are now trying to market a lifestyle to their kids. And Emo? It was manufactured from the beginning.

Well written, my only issue with it is by analyzing it in this much depth (and I know many a book other than the one you referenced has been written about these "subcultures") you actually give some validity of the whole bullshit notion that they are in fact a subculture. Its a fashion statement driven by a common musical bond. Punk wasn't a social movement, the ideas of a working class uprising sung about in songs by The Clash never occured, the anarchist ideals of The Exploited were a great drinking anthem for mayhem but not a direct reflection of any actual socio-political movement of the time. Malcolm McLaren was selling a look and a aestethic much like the Back Street Boys or Britney Spears. Music spawned by a impovrished and undereducated working class in Europe did little more than to provide a theme song for a new fashion trend replacing the Teddy Boys and Mods, who were in direct opposition to the deconstructed style, fashion and music of the Punk aesthetic.

Emo is no different, a sirens song for a disenfranchised middle class youth? Hardly, as they themselves have now become part of this new franchising technique, walking billboards for Diesel, Gap, and Urban Outfitters. Selling out? Hard to sell out when everyone bought in from the begining.

I could continue to pontificate on your post about this and in reality it isn't fair as its in no way a useful or fair critique of your writing. I just find the whole idea that these factions of fashion concious twats could be considered any more than marketing. Everytime I see a teenager wanting to look different so they can look just like thier friends it makes me want to punch a baby. Whats worse is when you see people in thier 20s and 30s doing it, that to me is just proof that we should be forcing eugenics, rather than pissing in the gene pool (thank you Henry Rollins). Again, nicely writen post and I am definately not attacking you KK I just really get aggrivated by this topic. So much so I spell worse than usual.

I totally agree, Shlongy.

I think it was Mike Ness on Social Distortion's "Live At The Roxy" CD who went on a rant about that between songs.

outside of your friends and family, there's no reason to want to be noticed. speaking of which, since i moved to a smaller city, what's wrong with people staring and inquiring who i am in public places...it,s disturbing.

I just referenced the book as piece of interest. I read it almost a year ago and I can't even find the damn thing now.

I couldn't even remember the title, just that the cover was neon green. I had to call my brother at the library to get the author's name.

Is there really any actual culture here. I get the feeling that all these groups today are just marketing strategies. These people come together based on appearance rather than a common belief structure. Course, I don't think "Weeeep. Life is pain. Life is death. Why won't my parents raise my allowence." constitutes a belief system.

Same holds for the so-called Hippoty-Hop Negro/Thug "culture". Don't think there's any real "culture" there, just a "look". Course I suppose you probably don't see too many of those around KSU.

Hold on, you're not smoking in your camwhore?! Have you quit? If so, I'm selling my Nabisco stock.

Good points. I enjoyed this. I have no discernable fashion sense, and it is certainly not tied to the music I listen to. One day I will have a Slayer shirt and Carhartts on, while listening to SRV. The next day I may be in jeans and a polo shirt, listening to Pelican or The Tragically Hip. It's hard to "classify" me, though I'm not rebelling against anything. If you need to, I'm an apathetic guitar playing preppy metal kid who wishes he could play the blues like old black men.
