So, who remembers the "A Show Of Hands" music project that commenced way back in August of last year?

[crickets chirping]

Yeah, I figured most of you had forgotten about it. Except for six other Uberers, that is, who have persisted with the project throughout the seasons and months that have since passed, diligently plugging away at recording, editing, more recording, more editing, and copious amounts of listening to mixdowns.

It is therefore with great exuberance that we, the mighty seven Ubermusicians, finally announce the completion of this gargantuan but exciting project!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The song that we chose to record by majority vote was a mix of "Anybody Out There" and "Comfortably Numb", originally written and performed by Pink Floyd. These songs were chosen for their versatility in terms of alternative instrumentation, simple to play yet majestic sounding chord progressions, and a broad range of appeal and familiarility to the general public.
Project members communicated solely via electronic means, utilising e-mail and a dedicated web site to exchange ideas and files. The fact that none of us have ever met in person to coordinate or record tracks is the defining unique aspect of this project, and sets it apart from other online recording projects - in fact, with a few voluntary exceptions, we have referred to ourselves strictly by our online pseudonyms, maintaining confidentiality and respect for privacy throughout the project.
Here's who was involved, where they hail from, what they did, and their comments on the project:
1) BranDo - Backnang, Germany
- Voiceovers
- Comments: Although there's just a wee bit from me in the end product, I really enjoyed trying to make this work. In the 17 years I was a member of a band I never would have guessed that one day I would try to record a cover!!!!, particularly over the internet with people that I have never met in my life just to put it on the internet. In addition, I would like to express my deepest respect for the members of this e-band, you guys are great!
2) CaptainThorns - Peoria, Illinois, USA
- Project manager, bass guitar, electric guitar solo 2, backing vocals, mixing, mastering
- Comments: This is by far the most challenging and time-intensive recording project that I have ever tackled as a musician, chief recording engineer, and project manager. It was a long haul for all of us to record the parts invidually and then tweak each track for alignment, effects, etc., but I believe that we are all proud to attach our names to the final product, which turned out extremely well. More importantly, I got to know some other musicians really well, and the relationships formed during this project will last long after this post fades into obscurity. A heartfelt THANK YOU to each band member, you all rock!
3) ETS - Evansville, Indiana, USA
- Drums, voiceovers
- Comments: I want to thank my publisher, my momma (for the room and board), and Jesus...and arms, definitely arms...I couldn't have done it without them.
4) Falconer - Reading, Berkshire, UK
- Electric guitar solo 3
- Comments: Watching this come to fruition has been really cool. I am skeptical about most internet collaborative efforts: I find they tend to fall apart due to sloth but this project turned out pretty damn good. Everyone put in the effort in the end and the result is a cover that I reckon we can all be proud of.
5) LittleDan - Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada
- Electric guitar solo 4, voiceovers
- Comments: I am proud of the final product, and I hope you all enjoy it. I really enjoyed the process of working with everyone from around the world on this song. I think it turned out pretty well considering this was done in our basements all across the continents, without anybody recording
tracks together. This all started from a click track and ETS's drums. There were quite a few retakes of parts, and though this was supposed to be
finished months ago, I'm glad that we didn't rush this project. It turned out fucking beautifully.
6) Moneyshotforyou - Abingdon, Maryland, USA
- Lead vocals, voiceovers, acoustic guitar, electric guitar solo 1
- Comments: When we started this off I was sure it was going to be a flop. I think there were about 30 people sign up and then it cut down immediately to just a few. I think the big drive really began at the beginning of this year once we all got through the holidays and from then on the final members really did some work to put this together. It was a lot of fun. Sometimes it was frustrating but all in all I had a good time and am very pleased with how this turned out.
7) Skrapmetal - Tampa, Florida, USA
- Theramin, synth, keys, baritone guitar, voiceovers, mixing
- Comments: Technology provides us the means to form an e-band and record music while separated by space. This is a powerful idea - that no matter where you are you can share commonalities and differences for the benefit of, or perhaps only the entertainment of, the one and the many. You need only have an interest in doing so. It's kind of like Ubersite itself, except instead of reading and watching gifs while playing with ourselves in the basement late at night, we've been listening to music while we play with ourselves in the basement late at night. This has been a lot of fun indeed.
And, in addition to the aforementioned participants, you may recognize several well-known voicewhores of some other Uberites...from America, Australia, and everywhere in between:
- Axolotl
- Beano
- Caulaincourt
- Coyote
- FilthyAssistant
- JackMcCallum
- Iddqd
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

[drum roll]

We now proudly present the world premiere of Uber's first international music project, A Show Of Hands:

http://www.ubersitemusic.info/Anybody%20Out%20There%20-%20Comfortably%20Numb.mp3

Be forewarned - it is a BIG file, since the complete production is about ten minutes in length.

For those interested in seeing the detailed behind-the-scenes work, including individual tracks, you can visit the project web site at: http://www.ubersitemusic.info

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In conclusion...anybody have any band name suggestions that are better than "Ubersitemusic.info?"
(Although, this may be the coolest and most original band name in history...the t-shirts could say, "We e-rock!")
Just out of curiosity...how (or whom) did this get on the Uberboard?
I've been in Jamaica for the past week, and was quite surprised to see that (and the recent reviews).
In other news, I see not much else has changed around here.
I'm quite speachless. I have no talent, but I'd love to contribute a voiceover if you needed one for the next project.
And yes.. i am sorta back.. you probably all forgot me anyways.. which might be a good thing.
I finally listened to this all the way through. I am seriously considering doing a remix of it, if that'd be cool?
--------------
rorrim already did one, but I don't think he posted it. Knock your bad self out - that's why all the parts are on the site. But you won't get me saying "Minus 2naammiiiii", because that's only in the final AOT mix. If you do a remix and post it, kindly link to this post, though. Props and all that...
==============
Yeah I hadn't seen one. I'm assuming they'll all work in GarageBand without too much hassle? And yeah no worries, I'll link back. Won't be for a week or two in any case.
=======================
Yup - all of the individual track files are either standard WAV or MP3 format, so you shouldn't have many issues, if any. Have fun!
"Don't Fear the Reaper" - Blue Oyster Cult
"Vertigo" - U2
"Good Vibrations" - Beach Boys (thinking particularly if you want to use the theremin again)
"Aqualung" - Jethro Tull
No worries about the key "critiques", Skrap - it is all a matter of personal opinion, really. My friend stated his opinion, I disagree with it - I really liked the sounds you chose to use. Besides, he did say that the whole thing was really really good and what he mentioned was overall just nit-picky stuff.
And plus, as long as YOU'RE happy with what you created, that is what is most important in the long run. I certainly wasn't out to tell anyone in the project exactly what to play or how to play it, and the end result is a beautiful tapestry of our collective personalities.
Hey Skrap, don't take what I was saying as criticism. I think you did a great job and believe I said so in our emails.
I was talking idealistically about what could have made it sound better in my opinion. In doing so, I was merely responding to and augmenting some of the critiques offered by the friend of Captain Thorns.
------------
No worries - I wasn't responding in pique. I do appreciate the kind sentiments you offered in email and on these reviews, as do I appreciate your coaching in getting the parts done and sounding as good as they do. I was simply saying that it's different from the original on purpose, and that what I posted is a sound that I like. Also I was spewing some brand names like they're paying me for product placement or something, but that was mainly to show that there was tube amp'd guitar in the final product someplace. That way the ghost of Les Paul doesn't come in the night and drain us of our e-souls.
I agree that the guitar parts weren't all vintage Fender through a Marshall. If they were, we'd all sound like Clapton. If he was drunk. I played the arpeggiated and strumming bari guitar parts of 'Numb' through a Peavey Rock Master tube preamp and an old Digitech GSR5, lined into the mixer and then into the computer. The overdriven bari parts were about 80% the same with about 20% of miked 2x12 Celestion cab driven by a ValveState 2x50 stereo tube power amp mixed in, then all that reverbed and sent to the computer.
The keys and synths during 'Numb' were played different from the original because a) I'm not a great keys player and b) I liked the way it sounds. Pink Floyd already did these songs the way Pink Floyd would do them. There's an analog synth doing a digeridoo part in 'Out There' for jebus' sake - it's supposed to be different.
Nice rant, ETS. :)
I agree 150% about tube amps versus solid state when it comes to overall quality of sound. My Peavey tube amp is what I use every time I am performing on stage with my electric guitar. But I do believe that solid state digital amps have their purpose as well, particularly in terms of properly compressed and sequenced effects. That's why I used my Crate DX for my solo...it had the sound I wanted, that would have been damn near impossible to replicate on the computer with the software I have.
My home studio gear is primarily Alesis...the mixer I own is their 8-channel firewire model, and it is a nice unit that doesn't break the bank. Sure, I'd like a Mackie Onyx or something pricier eventually as more work comes my way, but this is very affordable and decent quality for anyone looking for a mixer. They also make a USB version of the same mixer as well.
On top of that, I've got an Alesis dual compressor and MidiVerb effects unit, and my microphones are (none other than) SM57s and SM58s. Great mics that I've had for about 10 years and work the same now as they did when new. Next objective is to get a GOOD condenser mic.
For this, I played a Fender custom 5-string bass with active built-in EQ controls, and my electric is a Carvin custom that a friend helped me build from a kit back in my college band days.
Forgive the following rant...
I agree with most all of that critique, Cap'n.
He forgot to mention that the snare drum was overpowering in the 100-500k EQ range, especially at the outtake of the song and the unintentional rimshot in the middle of one of the drum rolls toward the end.
I could point out about a dozen other things we could have fixed if we weren't having to communicate over email and fix everything based on vague written suggestions. Not to mention half those involved were making the best of recording with crappy mics and solid state amps or effects pedals. It's not like the guitar's going to sound like a vintage Fender Strat through a Marshall stack no matter how much mixing you do. That was issue #1 with me, especially in the solos, the SOUND.
Let this be a lesson to ANY guitar player out there... Save up your money and get a tube amp! They might cost a little more in some cases, but there is simply no comparison. Sure you'll have to crank it up to get it to its sweet spot, but when you do, you'll wonder why anyone ever even built a solid state amp in the first place. If you can't afford a Marshall, I suggest going to a Carvin X-100b with 6L6 tubes (the EL34 version is VERY hot and screams, but 6L6 is more versatile, IMO). They are cheap at around $250-$350, they are versatile, and they sound like GOD when they are cranked, especially for creamy smooth solos. It was the amp featured in the classic "head cutting" scene in the movie Crossroads. It was Steve Vai and Frank Zappa's amp of choice through the 1980s and 1990s. Pick one up while they are still cheap. Of course, that particular amp is just a suggestion based on plenty of experience. You can't go wrong with a Marshall. They will cut through any mix, and they sound thick and ballsy on tape, like you've got some hair on your nuts. But it all depends on the sound you're going for, what kind of amp you need. If you're gonna run a studio, the more amps you've got lying around, the better!
The ideal guitar amp for this project would have been a Fender Twin. The ideal guitar, as I said before, a Strat. (The Carvin with 6L6's does a pretty close mimic of a Fender Twin and your strat doesn't have to be a Fender necessarily as long as it is a well-built, American-made solid body with good quality single coil pickups.) Believe it or not, the American line of Peavey guitars is damn good. If you can't afford a Fender or a Gibson, just look for an American made instrument and play it. 99 times out of 100, it will blow away anything you're going to find being made in Korea, Indonesia, or Japan. This is the trouble beginning players get into, they get drawn to bells and whistles or product placement with their favorite bands when the guitar the bands on stage play aren't always the product they're selling as the "signature model". For one thing, every guitar you buy off a rack needs to be set up properly before being played, especially on a recording. What most players don't realize (and this isn't really a criticism on anyon involved in this project, it's just ranting) is that all those little screws and springs and gadgets down by the bridge actually DO something! And those screws to either side of the pickups, they do something too! Without a well set up guitar, you're doomed from the outset. Even the best of players aren't going to sound their best on sub-par equipment.
Like I said above, having decent stuff doesn't have to mean breaking your bank account either. You'll find that having good equipment will actually make you a better player, because not only will you sound better and have a more intimate relationship to your instrument through the magical warmth of all-tube sound, you will be more likely to actually pick up and PLAY the thing.
As for mics. If you're going to do home recording, there is at least one mic you're going to need, and if given a few more dollars, two. One is a Shure SM57 or SM58. Either one of those will work nicely in most applications, such as micing up your amps. And yes, you ALWAYS mic up your amps! Don't be tempted to use a direct line in on guitars. Even if it's one of those fancy acoustic guitars with all the active sliders and knobs built in, just mic the thing up. You'll be glad you did. Make sure you keep the ambient noise to a minimum by surrounding yourself with large breated women. The breasts will shield any stray echos and other noises from the microphones and give the recording a little warmer sound. Tell them it's for the sake of art and they are doing a great service to mankind. The other mic you might want is some kind of large-diaphragm condenser mic. There are quite a few of them out there ranging from affordable to the uber-expensive-can't-afford-a-date-for-a-year-might-as-well-be-gold-plated brand, but you can't go wrong with this little life saver: http://www.getyourtech.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=179492
Acoustic instruments, vocals, even amps...you name it. This mic will give your recording a much crisper, clearer quality than standard "road" mics. If you're recording direct to computer, you'll need some kind of mixing board. Doesn't have to be fancy. Just make sure it has enough channels, particularly if you're recording drums, in which case there should be enough channels for every drum and them some, and phantom power is a must if you're going to be using a condenser mic like the one I described above. I've had good luck with the Behringer mixers. They have some very affordable, personal mixers that are perfect for budget home studio projects.
That's all for now. Next time, I'll give my lecture on why peanut M&M's are the worst thing mankind has ever invented.
I still believe we did our best under the circumstances and not a one of us should be ashamed of what we did here. Now, if you feel like traveling to my neck of the woods and doing it properly sometime, I'm game. Cap'n you should definitely come down some weekend and have drinks with me and the missus. Bring your lady along and we'll party like its 1999....or at the very least, 1812.
Some constructive comments from a musician friend of mine with a great ear for analyzing recordings...just wanted to share.
------------------------------
Overall I thought the work was very good, and definitely your best work yet, but there were a few things that pulled me back out of my temporary bubble and reminded me that I wasn't listening to musicians of the caliber of Pink Floyd. I'm mostly listing negatives here, but assume that everything I don't list is quite good. The background sounds throughout were especially well done.
- Is There Anybody out There guitar part:
Something about this guitar part makes me uncomfortable, but I can't exactly put my finger on it. The guys seems to be a pretty good player, but something just not quite right. One thing is that the strings aren't recorded with equal intensity - there are two recurring notes on the upper strings (the 3rd and 5th of the scale) which are louder than all the other notes, to the point that I can't really hear the middle strings often. Maybe some compression would help. My ears may be playing tricks on me, but those strings don't really sound in tune. Still, it's a well played part, especially the last 8 bars. The more I listen to it, the less it bothers me, but something just didn't seem right.
- Comfortably Numb verses - keyboard part:
In the middle of each of phrase (for instance, just after "nod if you can hear me") there's that descending line. In the original, it's only the bass which plays the intermediate note, but in yours the keyboard plays the fully voiced chord as well. In my opinion that draws too much attention to that movement and is a little distracting. Part of it is that it's a little too staccato in the keyboard part during that line. In my opinion that part would step back a little bit.
In the second part of the version is the descending arpeggio pattern on the keyboard. This pattern is different from the original recording. The original pattern is strings playing variations on 5-3-2-1-5-3-2-1, etc. Your version is keyboard mostly playing 5-3-1-5-3-1-5-3-1, etc. It also seems to be cut short each time the guy has to change chords. To my ears, this pattern seems a bit amateurish, and as such should maybe be a little lower in mix. All in all, the keyboard just sounds a little too Van Halen for my tastes.
- Muddy bass register
Is there a baritone guitar or tic-tac strumming in the mix? I hear the bass guitar notes, but there seem to be a lot of other notes in that same pitch vicinity. I can't tell if it's just my ears, but it seems like I hear notes just a 3rd or a 5th over the bass guitar. In my opinion, the bass isn't getting it's "personal space" that it's normally afforded. What's going on here? I little bit of full bass areas are fine, but it seems to rumble throughout the whole song. Maybe backing it off for part of the song would be good. In the original, they lighten up the sound for one of the verses and it gives a little relief from the ever-increasing wall of sound. I'm NOT talking about the bass guitar. In Pink Floyd, Roger Waters was always given some decent exposure.
- Vocals
Throughout, all lead and background vocals are very good.
- Guitar solos:
The first guitar solo is very well done. I'm assuming you played the second one - that's pretty good as well. The third solo almost pulls it off. I can tell the guy knew some riffs, but had trouble putting them together. A lot of times there's a uncomfortably long break between adjacent ideas, but that could be solved by stretching that last note a little later, towards the next idea. Backing it off just a little bit in the mix would probably allow the other sounds to cover the gaps too. The 4th solo is pretty good as well, but the timing isn't quite there. A little time quantization would do wonders there. In my opinion, at the end, the background fading out is a little goofy. It's fading a lot faster than the guitar solo, and feels kind of like he's left out in the open. It gives me that uncomfortable feeling like Homer gets during the Monorail song.
Good effort. I like when musician's efforts can come together like this. Sounds like an interesting project overall. Sound is a bit rough around the edges. A little unbalanced and muddy. But, considering how it was produced, that's just the reality of it. Sounds up to par with most bands' demo tapes.
----------------------
Yeah - just goes to show you how much goes on behind the scenes in professional recording and mastering studios in terms of editing. Due to the distance and equipment differences, uniform normalization and recording techniques was virtually impossible, and working with lossy compression only for a few files (i.e. MP3 instead of WAV) is mainly what separates this from a "pro" recording.
Still, given the limitations we had, I'm very happy with the end results.
=====================
Rad - I agree with your sentiment. I'm normally not much for fadeouts either. But it certainly does make the editing on the end of a track somewhat less time consuming.
In this case, especially, since we weren't all in the same studio room jamming together, it helped us to avoid what might otherwise have been significant synchronization issues with cutoff timing.
ETS, I', glad you were a Nazi with the takes and the mastering... It would have sounded half assed had we not corrected the flaws you addresed. Want to do it again? I'm thinking Voodoo Child, with a sweet jam in the middle.
----------------
I'd be down with that. I can play a mean Voodoo Child. But I was thinking if Shlongy wanted aboard to do one, "Surrender" by Cheap Trick might be more appropriate. Kinda similar style to The Cliches' stuff he did back in the 1930s. :P
Kidding Shlongy...I like your old stuff.
Ironically, the FIRST band I was ever in, before I started my own, was a Cheap Trick cover band - complete with some dude who ran around dressed and looking like Rick Neilson 24/7...so I got to "play" Robin Zander...but after a month or so, I realized that it was painful to hit all those high notes.
And, I didn't want to hang out with anyone dressing up like Rick Neilson.
I would do "He's a Whore" off of the 2nd Cheap Trick record, though.
Let's do THIS song, instead.
ETS, I', glad you were a Nazi with the takes and the mastering... It would have sounded half assed had we not corrected the flaws you addresed. Want to do it again? I'm thinking Voodoo Child, with a sweet jam in the middle.
----------------
I'd be down with that. I can play a mean Voodoo Child. But I was thinking if Shlongy wanted aboard to do one, "Surrender" by Cheap Trick might be more appropriate. Kinda similar style to The Cliches' stuff he did back in the 1930s. :P
Now that this is complete, let me say that while I acknowledge I may have been a little "Hitleresque" in my delivery, I think the harsh criticisms paid off. I've spent a lot of time in the studio producing other musicians' work, and sometimes it takes a little umph to get people mad enough to give me thier absolute best performance. More times than not, it's not a matter of them lacking the talent, it's a matter of them lacking the confidence and determination to say, "I rock...I KNOW I rock...and now I'm gonna show you how fucking much I rock!"
Without that, it's not worth even picking up instruments in the first place.
All that being said, I'm proud to have been a part of this and I think everyone involved deserve a firm pat on the back, particularly Skrapmetal and Captain Thorns for their immense amount of work. CHEERS!
+2 for this....
And plus a million for this song. I held off on listening to the final master until it was posted on Uber, as a bit of a surprise for myself. I fucking love it. This turned out amazing. I'm damn proud to be part of it. As well, it wasn't all about the "fame" that this would garner me. I wanted to do it, because I liked the idea of working with people I clearly would not be able to work with in any other way. This was a unique way of recording a song, for me anyway.
I would love to do this again, if anyone else is interested.
I am glad to see all the reviews on this, and it is good that it being listened to prior to most of them. As Sico said, it is kinda geeky to put this amount of effort into a project only to post it on a website. But however it started, it quickly evolved beyond "Hey let's make some music and put it on Uber". As it progressed, it became more and more a social experiment as well. I think, a successful one. At least, a highly enjoyable one.
When the idea of a collaboration was first presented, I thought it was a great idea, just for the concept. In actuality though, I had no idea what to expect, or if it would even really happen.
Even knowing there were some skilled musicians working on this project, I never would have expected it would turn out like this.
I love the whole extended beginning, the voiceovers are great- everything sounds crystal clear, and a great job on the solo. This fucking rocks, guys. Sincerely..awesome job.
Sico,
I don't believe that we did this just for the website. It became more of a personal goal for me to see if I was musically talented enough to make this happen. Almost forgot - to answer your last question Sico - there will be no more installments. At least not coordinated by me.
Life has changed rapidly for me in the past few weeks in terms of family and work, and I don't foresee Uber being a regular part of my life for much longer. But hey, it's helped me survive many a boring work day over the past two and a half years.
Doesn't mean I won't drop in from time to time though, just to check on a few of you.
Sico - I can understand your perspective. For me, this was about much more than just doing "another song for Uber." It was an opportunity for me to hone my recording and mixing techniques, network with and get feedback from other musicians for improvement, and overall improve my personal musicianship.
That in and of itself would have been enough drive for me to do this project, as I feel that any time one spends on developing a skill that has applicability for them in the real world, is never time wasted. We are all always constantly learning, and anything that we can do to enrich and expedite that learning process can be nothing short of useful.
And, as a side bonus, I *did* get some new work in the music business that I would not have otherwise likely earned had I not had this available to utilize as a demo project of my mixing work. That more than justifies the time invested..which for me, was about 2-3 hours a week, except for busy holiday periods and such. I've no regrets about any of this, and I would wager that everyone else who participated feels the same of their personal time invested.
Wow, I have a lot of thoughts on this and I didn't even bother listening to it yet. I'm going to give you credit on one hand because of the effort. It seems that this was a great amount of that put into this project, including developing a website, etc.
On the other, I want to say that this couldn't become more nerdy and, for lack of a batter word, display of loser qualities. Granted, it takes talent, talent I don't have personally, to play music at high qualities, etc. I can play drums, just not very well. I don't want to take the talent away from you guys (I haven't listened yet, I'll judge later) and that being said...
Don't you see how fucking ridiculous it was to do all this for a lame website, to get pats on the back, kudos, or whatever it was you were going after? Am I alone in this viewpoint? I spent that time fucking whores, getting drunk, working, and more. I could understand if you guys were in a "band" or some shit but holy hell, it's a fucking website full of hacks and nerds, myself included.
I don't know, CT, nothing against you because quite frankly I think we'd get along outside the confines of this shithole place and all. This isn't a personal attack on anyone else either, for that matter, but it just seems to me like an incredible waste of time.
That being said, do I have to wait another year for another installment?
The whole punk/DIY era started BECAUSE of bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, etc. and all of these mindless "virtuoso musician" bands that I hated and still hate today.
When you get ready to do "track 2", I'll consider involvement, depending on the song choice.
