I glare at her from across the table. Her slim fingers grip the glass and she raises it to her lips. She always applies lip gloss before she drinks, leaving a sparkling, ghost kiss on the rim of the glass.
She pulls the tiny tube from her bag and rings her lips again.
I fight the urge to lean over and bite off her pouty mouth.
Why is she here? The question burns in my mind as the last bit of my drink cools the rage building at the back of my throat.
She flips her hair and her eyes ghost over me to John. He's sitting to my left and holds her attention for the blink of an eye. Her green eyes gleam with satisfaction as she watches me squirm. She knows my sins. She knows my jealousy.
I want her to go. I was here first. These were my friends. She's the interloper.
I get up from the table and escape to the bar. The wait is long enough for my brain to sort out what I must do.
It's time for dancing.
Something inside me lifts me on top of the wooden bar top. The bartender swears at me to get down, but I ignore him. I must dance. How fun it is to dance!
"Catherine!" I call. "Look at me, Catherine!"
She turns her blonde head and frowns at me, deep lines creasing her forehead. I'm not a good dancer. In fact, I failed dance in gym class. I don't know how you fail a class in gym, but I managed to. Somehow, all that was gone in my dance. I am some sort of lord, doing some sort of dance. A dance lord, perhaps.
From the corner, some one starts clapping a rhythm.
And I dance to it.
I dance a fine jig and everyone else starts clapping. John stands and starts clapping along. I laugh and spin. Here I am, enjoying my moment in the spotlight. I am a god amoung men. That dumb bitch can't steal this from me!
Then Catherine pulls out the gun and shoots me in the face.
My only regret is not going for waffles that morning and instead I had the terrible coffee.
It gave me the shits.
