I can't help but find this pretty sick. Yes there will undoubtedly be some benefits to the children, but it doesn't feel right to allow this ultimate cop-out with zero accountability...

I picture in my head how the transaction goes down:
---
1) Parents pull into parking spot, finish the last of their beer (can of course)

2) Scan the parking lot and the hatch to make sure no other parents are there (if someone is already at the window, they wait until it's their turn like an after-hours walk-up ATM)

3) Wrap baby in slippery blanket and exit vehicle; remind baby of how "...fun it will be to live in a building with storks all over it..."

4) Open the hatch, place info card* and dirty, matted Mickey Mouse doll on its chest

5) Speak into intercom: "uh, dropping of a baby here. You might want to change his diaper...and probably clean his dung off this hatch slide."

6) Blow that popsicle stand and head to the used underwear vending machine

*Example of info card:
Baby boy, cries too much so we're dumping him before he brings shame on our family. May answer to 'shithead, loudmouth, or deuce'. Recovering from head, chest, and arm injuries, wearing 2-day old diaper and hasn't eaten in 24 hours. Please give him all your love...but make sure he doesn't come looking for us.
---
Again, it's not that I dispute the better life that might await a baby whose parents truly don't want it and/or cannot take care of it. But it just doesn't seem right to enable anonymous drop-off of babies without so much as a 'by your leave'. It's also a bit humorous to think of this service without age limits - it could be a very effective deterrent of bad behavior in all children (Hey Suki, quit whining or I'll drop you down the hatch).

Ah well, better than the dumpster or off a cliff!

I don't get how some people can go through the pain of pregnancy and childbirth and then just throw the kid away. Why not just get an abortion?
---------------------
Easily done enough when you think about it Flack, 15 year old girl, messes around with her boyfriend and misses a period or two, nothing of note there as many girls that age aren't regular. She notices she is late eventually but figures she couldn't possibly be pregnant bc he pulled out/ate tomatos that morning/or whatever urban legend is floating around these days about not getting girls preggers. She is now too late for an abortion and feels like if she ignores it, the whole thing will go away. Gives birth in her bedroom and two days later you read an article about another infant found wrapped in plastic bags found in a dumpster.

That story makes me want to fucking puke. Your post, however, was dead on the money.

Two or more people have mentioned this being better than the dumpster - seeming to say that I didn't recognize that. Allow me to point out the last line of the post: "Ah well, better than the dumpster or off a cliff!"

I was listening to Radio 4 the other day and they were interviewing this former junkie who'd turned his life around and started a business. He was so succesful he'd been nominated for awards for being excellent. He said that as a boy he'd envied kids in foster homes because they didn't live with violence and junk. He said he'd wished he'd been given away by his parents so that he could have had a better, less troubled childhood and grown up to be less of a scallywag.

+2 for directing me to the article where I found this quote. "I want mothers to seek help first if they have problems," said Abe, who is childless after unsuccessful attempts with his wife Akie."

I don't know why it is funny, it just is

So you'd rather that they keep finding dead babies in garbage bags on the side of the road like they do now?

I think people should have to apply to have kids. Too many stupid fuckers out there able to breed at will.

> excellent point jimmy, unless you buy into the whole nature vs. nurture idea

Please stop. Nature vs. nurture is not a debate, genious, it is a partition.

Nature = genetics = child's abilities
Nurture = upbringing = child's values

Therefore, what whoever said below holds, two re-re's don't come together to make an Einstein or Voltron. They can raise a well-behaved, good-valued re-re. But still a re-re. Unfortunately, if your parents are stupid, you probably are as well. Sure, there is the odd mutant, but statistics don't lie... they just mislead.

What would you have them do - put them in the dumpster, like they way they do now?

"Again, it's not that I dispute the better life that might await a baby whose parents truly don't want it and/or cannot take care of it."

Not likely. Look at it this way, it takes a "special" kind of person to drop their kid down a hatch. It's these same "special" genetics that this kid will be saddled with. After all, two tards don't come together to form Einstein or Voltron or whatever.

I'm guessing it's probably six in one and half a dozen in the other.

its a way for the nuns to prevent people from having abortions...if they want to raise the kids, then have fun with that.

There are perfectly good answers to those questions, but they'll have
