This entire bandwagon reminds me of this book I had as a little kid about this poor guy who just wanted to impress a girl with his hat. Finally, she does admit that she likes his hat.
Not after being a hard to get bitch for 12 pages though.

The book you are thinking of is 'Go Dog Go', by P.D. Eastman.
It has all these dogs in different colors, doing all kinds of crazy things.
There is a girl dog who keeps asking a boy dog about her hat.

The Snowman
I made a great tall snowman
With two huge coal black eyes
And just to reach around his neck
Took two of Daddy's ties.
I put a hat of mother's
Upon his rounded head
And then I ran and left him
And hurried off to bed.
When I awoke next morning
Imagine my surprise
My snowman had run away
And left his hat, ties, and eyes!
