Okay, I typed the word "Rap" into the search box just before posting to make sure that this has not been covered yet, because I know how much we whiney little whores just love to bitch and moan when a topic is repeated. The only items found were a couple posts by newcomers who thought they were telling us something new, topics like "Rap sucks," and "All rappers should drown" (or something along those lines, I don't know).
Well I'm here to say that Rap is awesome. Yeah, that's right bitches. And no, I'm not saying this to rebel against all of those anti-rap sissies. I'm saying this because I really do enjoy rap/hip-hop music, and every time I see a post that is about how much someone hates rap, I want to cry and cry and cry until my eyes hurt and my pillow is wet with tears. I mean, no...
But anyways, I think that people don't give Rap a chance. Kids these days listen to their punk-rebel music, and go "look at me, look at how punk (or whatever other stupid label kids call themselves) I am, omg omg!!11". But because kids these days are image-whores, and all they care about is what people think of them, they have gotten the idea that "true [insert label]'s" only listen to THIS type of music or THAT type of music. And they HAVE to look "hardcore", or else they're just a "poser". I use these terms in quotations because, well, because they're just plain gay-sounding.
"Why do you hate rap? What's so wrong with it?" you might ask the image-whore.
I have heard many responses, and here are the 4 most popular:
1) "Rap sucks because they don't talk about anything meaningful. All rappers do is talk about how great they are, and no one can relate to it, least of all me."
- They don't talk about anything meaningful? So? Who cares, it's all in good fun, you little pansy. Who needs to relate to music? What, did you break up with your girlfriend, so now you need to listen to some sissy band singing about how once the lead singer broke up with HIS girlfriend? What, does that make you feel better? Are you a pussy? Yeah, when I get dumped by a girl I like, I listen to sweet songs of sorrow and reminisce of the times when we layed out under the stars...oh wait, I'm not a faggot.
I think the Big Tymerz put it best when they stated "Niggaz mad, don't like it 'cuz I'm bangin' they bitches, when the light hits the ice it twankles and glistens." Why is this like, the best lyric ever written? Simply because it KICK ASS! You don't have to "relate" to it, you don't have to be "taken in by the deep, poetic verses". All you got to do it listen, think to yourself "Oh my God, that's awesome!" and then repeat it to your friends every once in a while just to let them know that you're the shit. Wouldn't it be awesome to use that lyric as the message on your answering machine? "Niggaz mad, don't like it 'cuz I'm bangin' they bitches, when the light hits the ice it twankles and glistens...leave a message at the beep." Hell yes.
2) "Rap is un-intelligent. The rappers have nothing important to say, it's all just about the 'bitches' and the 'bling bling'".
- Oh, I get it, you're not just an image whore, you're a psuedo-intellectual asshole as well? If you only listen to music to try and get an opinion/philosophy or something of that sort, then why don't you try EXPANDING a little? We discussed in the last response about why spittin' gangsta talk is awesome. But if you don't like that stuff, maybe if you TAKE THE TIME to explore a little bit more into the hip hop music world, you'll find plenty of rappers who have things to say - things that matter. Gangstarr, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest are just a few of many hip hop artists who's songs usually have messages in them.

See? A lot of rap songs have meaning to it, you fag. You just limit yourself to what you see on MTV and hear on the radio, and then base all of your stupid assumptions on that. Because TV and Radio is where you get ALL of your information from right? Whore.
3) "They call eachother 'niggaz' when it is a horrible, racist word. And if a white person uses it, they get beaten up."
- Get over it, you fag. I'm white, and I don't care. Neither should you.
4) "They don't play their own instruments. It requires no talent at all, whatsoever."
- Oh, so music is all about talent now, isn't it? I guess that means that The Who sucks becuase Led Zepplin produced better solos and had more musical talent? If music was based on how good the band plays their instruments, then music would be a big competition, like a sport. I thought that music was about expressing yourself, having fun, I mean, whatever happened to that? It's all about who's better than who? I feel sorry for you. Wait, no I don't.
So that's why I like rap. I'm not narrow-minded, and I don't limit myself only to rap music either. I like lots of other music, I like Radiohead, I like the Sex Pistols, hell, I listen to ANYTHING as long as it sounds good to me. I guess people forgot about that - Listening to music because it sounds good, not because it gives you a certain image. If you're going to diss different types of music, at least give it a chance before you decide that it sucks. And if it does suck, well, then fine. That's your lame-ass opinion, just as this is my lame-ass opinion.

Istaros completely owned El Guapo. Just because he articulated that ownage very eloquently, does not make him "a teenager with an impressive vocabulary". He completely smoked him, right into the ground, there is no two ways about it. I find it completely fucking sad that you can be intimidated by somebodies intelligence to the point that instead of trying to refute anything he has said, you simply dismiss him as being "young" and "knowing nothing of the world". It's completely pathetic.

Cool, I appreciate that you did not come back with attacks. I am not about attacking people. I honestly thought you had said in a previous thread that you were a teen. That is the only reasdon I made the statement in the first place, it wasn't meant to be an attack(ok, maybe it was meant to be a bit smug).
All I was saying was that Collin wasn't speaking in a literal sense. Ofcourse an objective opinion is an oxymoron but to, I don't know, to be objective when forming an opinion is a very good thing and that was all he was trying to say.
As far as life experience goes, I would say everyone that has made it to adulthood and beyond can try to top each others life experiences but no one can really claim that they have seen or done more, IMHO. I might not be a world traveler but in the words of Willie Nelson, "this face is all I have, worn and lived in," I have been through my share of shit and had my share of great experiences as well.

It would be an assumption to say that my chances were better than his; which is probably why I didn't say that. Again, that's a definitive statement -saying that my chances definitely are better than his. Of course it's an assumption.
It hardly relates to what I said, however, which was "chances are that I have experienced more than you." In other words, my life experiences DO outshine those of the majority of people -not necessarily his. He does, however, fall under the category of the "rest of the world" when I -or anybody else- talks to him. Not unlike how I fall into the category of the "rest of the world" as it relates to you. As such, since I do know that my worldly experiences supercede those of most people's(using your judgments of what makes one "worldly experience" better than another), CHANCES ARE that they supercede his.
That's not quite the same as saying my chances are better than his specifically, although I guess I can see how you would confuse the two. The difference lies in the comparative set; one("chances are") involves the entire world, the other("my chances are better than yours") involves only two people.

You're losing whatever fire it was you previously had; nowhere did I say, or even suggest, the necessity for literal communication(although now that you bring it up, I do have to say that I think the world would be a better place with it -but that's dependent on a matter of taste, i.e. what is "better").
As for college, what does that matter? We all know that a degree is just a way to get a better job -it does nothing to reflect on your actual intelligence. Everything you've learned or can learn in college by paying hundreds of dollars a year(bare minimum), you can learn by going to the library, getting online, or applying for an internship -none of which cost a dime, if you can manage your resources correctly. The downside is that your intellect can't be "proven" through these methods, so they won't really help land you a better job(with the exception of the internship).

I'd rather not divulge either. The thing about it is, I DON'T care about being confused for a teen. That may depend on what your definition of "caring" is, but at most, those types of attacks annoy me -nothing more. And they don't annoy me because I find them hurtful, distasteful, or unhumorous(all of which they can, on occasion, be) -they annoy me because they're a waste of good flame-power. They don't strike home or ignite any sort of rage. They're just plain dumb. They don't have any basis in reality(as far as you know, at least), and they don't have any truly caustic qualities -so if they are neither maddening nor realistic, what's the point in using them?
If you want a couple of spartan examples of the "worldly experiences" you and "the handsome one" seem to hold so dear, I've lived over half of my life in several different countries, and visited at over a dozen(I'm not sure of the exact number) -mostly in Western Europe and West Central Africa. I'm not going to be so cavalier as to propose that overseas life alone is basis for sound, "worldly" judgement, but it's a starting point. There's plenty more, but I have no overarching desire to get into the grimy, boring details.

To formulate a strong and thought out stance on an issue, one must base it on personal experience because that is where opinions come from, ultimately. Again, stop acting like you're in an elementary playground. My age has not been disclosed; even if it had been, that has nothing to do with anything here. There are kisd who've graduated from college in their early teens, pre-teens even(I loathe the university establishment, but it does make for the occasional good point). Of course, you're probably going to shake your head and marvel how I can possibly have considered book-smarts to be related to "life experiences" in any way -but I haven't. The point is, life experiences have nothing to do with this argument(see above). Life experiences don't even come close to providing objectivity, quite the contrary; and even if they did, it doesn't matter, because objectivity has nothing to with an opinion -particularly when, as the author pointed out, it's a matter of pure taste.
If you really think I'm wrong(or ignorant, or smart), I'd like to see the objective basis for the inherent lack of quality in rap music. Because that is, after all, what this all boils down to.
By the way, if that statement is pretentious, I've earned the right to be so. I'll say it again, chances are that I've seen far more of the world than Collin has. Or you, for that matter.
By the way, there is nothing in that statement that can be rationally construed as being an assumption. Perhaps you need to look up the meaning of that word, as well?

I like a lot of rap and agree that there is intelligence behind a lot of it. People always have and always will write things off due to limited personal experience. It is human nature and I am guilty of it. I agree with whoever said there are good and bad artists/songs/albums in all genres of music. This post IS pretty much crap. The points are not well made.
I DO like a lot of rap, but about 80% of it is not worth paying attention to.
I'm a metal head at heart, and have been for years. But I have also listened to a bunch of rap along with it(underground and popular). Don't get the wrong idea. I HATE RAP METAL! Anthrax did it well and so did RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, but that's about it.
Does something have to be intelligent for it to be enjoyed? NO, that's stupid. Are the 3 Stooges intellingent humor? Did the Ramones have intellectual lyrics? No, are they just fun to watch and listen to.
You don't have to be black, a wigger, or trivial to like rap.
You don't have to be white, angry, or depressed to like metal.
There's always someone out there that can't stand the music you listen to, no matter what kind of music it is.
If you feel the need to convert people to your taste in music to justify yourself, then go ahead.
But, it's a waste of time.

The terms "opinion" and "objectivity" are conflictive by their very nature; an opinion necessitates the elements of personal bias and social upbringing, among others, just to be an opinion. Even without regressing to the rather dull recourse of dictionary.com definitions, this should be obvious once you give it a few minutes of thought. An opinion cannot exist in and of itself; somebody needs to have an opinion for it to exist. There is no such thing as an opinion without a mind to hold it.
In other words, it is automatically exempt from the status of verity. Your opinion may coincide with the truth, but the truth exists separate from your opinion, since it is objective -I won't get into a debate on the issue of objective reality, since it's not necessary here(seeings as you've already set up that objective reality exists, for the purpose of this argument anyway).
Since an opinion is a construct of an individual's thought processes -not cold, hard facts-, it is subject to, well, subjectivity. It is simply not possible for a human being to become completely objective; our physiology is not based on reason, but on emotional response.
And things like "worldly experiences" hardly constitute any sort of basis for objectivity, seeing as they are primarily personal in nature -and "personal relationships" are about as reliable as "knee-jerk reactions," if not less so.
However, all of this is rather irrelevant, as nothing you've said so far suggests that your previous (implied) statement that "'rap sucks' is an objective opinion" is anything more than conjecture. It's amazing how everybody thinks that the music they like is the "good" music. Talent goes beyond your preferences, I'm afraid.

My pesonal favorite type of music is Heavy metal , followed by Jazz (Everything other than modern elevator jazz ) , follwed by punk , followed by Techno , followed by Romantic (Not lovey-dovey , I'm talking about "classical" music from the romantic era ) . I also listen to some rap , a (very) little country , industrial , etc etc . Simply put , all music is good (other than polka and "mexican music" ) , it just depends on whether or not you can get something you like out of it . If the music moves you , that's all that fuckin' matters , and most of these pansy ass kids from today don't seem to get this fact ; it's all about image to them .

This is a really good post, except I think that rap has some meaningful messages. It's just that people who are not black can't identify with them, so they make fun of what they don't understand. first of all, i'd like to make a point that may clear up some extreme points of view: when you say "rap sucks", it usually infers that absolutely every rap song is horrible. the fact is, in every genre, there are some good songs and some bad songs. i hate rap, but im sure that somewhere, someday, there will be a rap song that i like. i can still say that rap sucks. just because a genre sucks doesnt mean that every song in the genre sucks.
anyway, rap does suck. most of the time the lyrics are about one of the following:
"im so great" (money, sex, strength, power or watever)
"i hate you"
"everyone loves me"
"i love you" (regardless of whether its true or not)
"i worked hard to get here" (even though you don't deserve it)
any song under those categories is a waste of time. i hate them all.
as for the music, it basicly consists of a drum loop, a bass loop, and one or two other instruments in a 8/16 beat loop. it sounds like it was formed in a matter of minutes using an electric keyboard or computer and trial and error patterns. it doesnt even have to be that cool; it just supports the lyrics. normally, it gets stuck in my head a annoys the hell out of me.

I don't like (c)rap because most of it really is so objectionable it just isn't good fun. I don't have to intellectualise: when I hear them go on about how many bitches they've got, I just turn off. I will listen to some (c)rap occasionally though; you have to give it a chance. I've just been watching Snoop's video where you get to see beautiful Brazil and its honeys. I've even got one Eminem CD and Tribe Called Quest tape. But most of the time (c)rap is too irritating to listen to.

I like some of the rap in Office Space. However, you get a -2 for all the homophobic remarks.
It's kind of being hypocritical to say that people don't like rap because they don't listen to it, but you don't like 'fags' when you probably know like one.

I dislike rap music for the sole reason that I do not enjoy listening to it. Although I know what music I like, I have absolutely no idea what constitutes 'good' music, and don't pretend to.

That stupid stuff is really annoying and non-musical. Don't get all mainstream hip-hop on me. And what are lyrics? Poetry, not music. Music is developed and given thought. Rap is stereotypical bass lines and drum beats that convey words spoken. Some may be poetic and insightful, but listening to music is, in my opinion, about listening to emotion conveyed through sonic means.

Here's a thought--- Rap is only good in the most non-mainstream circumstances. While Hardcore, Trip-hop, and old-school are usually pretty decent and sometimes exceedingly musical, mainstream rap is almost always crap that is overproduced and underdeveloped.
Radiohead, yes, they're my favorite.
But you must realize that except for maybe "gossip talk" by missy elliot and Dr. Dre's stuff as well, mainstream stuff is almost never original.

I don't know why I feel the urge to give you +2, and I totally disagree with you on all of the issues you put forward. You presented them well, almost believable in a way. Although I want to SCREAM WIGGER and bust a gat. Oh yah, Fuck rap, it's all played to the same beat, and everyword is repeated in every other fucking line. It's like going to a 2nd grade classroom and reading the kid's poetry. But, some underground rap is cool. I listened to some when I lived in la, kinda hard out here in the corn fields. Fuck "Fity Cent", "Puff Daddy", and all those other mainstream rappers. I can't tell one from the other anymore.
