Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas is one of the more recognizable landmarks from the skyline. It is the tower with the large lighted ball on top of it. Its sits next to the Hyatt Regency and I believe it is owned by them. The "ball" contains 3 levels. An obervatory deck, a restaurant, and a bar. The restaurant and bar slowly spins making one revolution every 55 minutes and offering guests a 360 degree view of Dallas. It sits 55 stories above above the ground and it takes the glass sided elevators 68 seconds to reach the top.
We were too young to drink so we never went to the bar but me and Amber would meet quite often on the observatory deck. We would slip past security late at night so we could have the entire place to ourselves. Usually we couldn't shut up. We were in love and constantly talking to each other about nothing but when we would meet there very little was said.
We would spend hours together walking the circumference of it or standing silently looking over the city. The wind was usually pretty strong that high up and she would cuddle inside my jacket with me.
She would always grab me tightly on the elevator ride up. I think it frightened her a bit. I always wondered if 68 seconds was enough time for me to get a blowjob but never had the nerve to ask.
It was a beautiful time and the memories are permanently etched in my brain. To this day I still don't have it in me to take another girl there, it was our special place.
Amber was my first love and eventually broke my heart. We remained friends through the rest of high school but slowly lost contact afterwards. Being that she was my first love I have never forgotten about her and I still reluctantly let myself bring up these painful memories from time to time.
She called me awhile back. Our conversation was short and awkward.
She asked me to meet her at "our place" at midnight.
I was there at 11:30 and an anxious wreck. What did she want after all these years? Did she want to work things out again? Did she want to restart our friendship? I was involved with another girl at the time but knew that I wouldn't think twice to drop her for Amber. At one point in my life I knew that we would end up being together for ever.
I was smoking a cigarrette on the deck when she walked through the door. She was just as beautiful as I remebered her. She was wearing a white sundress that contrasted her tan skin and complimented her natural blonde hair. Her mouth wasn't smiling but her sparkling blue eyes were.
She slowly walked over and threw my cigarrette over the railing before giving me a long hug.
I started to talk but she put her finger over my lips to shush me. I held her from behind while we looked out over the city for what seemed like an eternity.
After about 20 minutes she loosened my grip and turned to face me. She was wearing a sad smile and tears were welling up in her eyes. I reached towards her face to wipe them away but she took a step back.
She reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope.
"Wait 68 seconds after I get into the elevator before you read this" she whispered to me.
These were the only words that were spoke the entire time.
A deep sadness filled me as she walked off. I got one more long glance over the shoulder from her before she walked through the door.
It took another 30 minutes for me to open the envelope. From her tears and silence I knew it couldn't be welcome news. I contemplated throwing it over the railing along with the cigarrette butt I had smoked down to the filter.
I took a deep breath and leaned against the railing before opening it.
It was an invitation to her wedding.
I was immediately overwhelmed by the memories we shared in the tower and was scared I would leave some behind that evening if I left. At 2 in the morning I was finally approached by security asking me kindly to leave.
"Give me 5 minutes and I'll be out of your hair"
I smiled at him and he nodded.
I tore up the envelope and invitation and watched the small pieces slowly flutter 150 feet down to the ground.
Now I wish I could have done the same with all these memories.
This is a view from the observatory deck in the tower.

Sad story.
Consider it a lesson to always carry a letter of your own for just such a time as this.
