I'm sure you've all had your fill of contests and such, cluttering up your daily viewings of occasionally inspired but typically mediocre fiction or humor or lame inside jokes or plain old bullshit here on glorious Ubersite, but I am offering something completely new. This is something I have heard talked about before around here, so I won't take claim for the idea at all, but as it's been a year at least since I've heard it mentioned, I am going to take responsibility and put it on. If anyone would like to assist, my e-mail is parthecs.at.jmu.edu and I welcome your intrusion into my life.
This is a musically-inspired contest. That means that all posts will have as their attachment a song, chosen by the author, which serves as inspiration for the piece. That is the only requirement for submissions. As the song must be attached, there will be no pictures or original artwork by the poster, so no nsfw restrictions will be necessary (save, I guess, for song lyrics). However, poetry, prose, anecdotes, humor, whatever, all will be accepted so long as it is relatively obviously relevant to the song. You will be assigned a genre of song within which you will choose something you like, can tolerate, or at least feel you can write from.
Here are other rules which I am considering putting into effect to try to make it more fair. All are open to debate.
1. Genre assignments (for songs) will be by pairing, rather than by round. This will hopefully make individual competitions more interesting and less like other pairings.
2. I will do the math on this, but I am going to count votes for people participating in the contest twice as much as non-participants. This will reduce interference from people like alters, and will make it more important for participants to read an rate their competitors.
3. All pairings will, of course, be random. I am open to the idea of organizing the first bracket by a poster's overall rating if that sounds interesting to anyone, but otherwise will keep it simple.
4. Any other ideas will be entertained.
So, who's interested? Anyone? I will leave this post open for entrants for one week, and pairings will be issued next wednesday. At that time I will assign genres, and give a more comprehensive schedule of events. I would appreciate any suggestions of music genres, and am open to less traditional ones as well, so long as they mean something to the people participating.

I like it, though while the genre pairing might prove interesting, it seems needlessly limiting, especially because some people are definitely prone to some more than others. I know pH had a contest like this recently, I liked it. I'll get back on whether I can participate or not, but either way I look forward to the entries.

Erm... yes... copyright stuff. I hadn't thought of that. Silly of me. Well then, I suppose attaching the songs is out unless you're doing your own songs in which case power to you and you deserve to win this just for being that awesome. For those without musical talent, just link to a youtube of the song or something, and if you can't find an acceptable version of the thing, just give us some lyrics at the beginning or whatever so we know what you're doing.

Much as I love the idea of participating in this, hon, I just don't have the time (or creativity) to do new stuff for Uber nowadays. My Uber use is pretty much limited to lunch time browsing. But I appreciate the sentiment. ^_^

Reading this post again...if your intent is for people to write poetry/prose BASED on an existing song not written by the post author...again, due to copyright laws and the shenanigans around here over the past year, I don't think that Mr. Cilfone will let this contest fly.
But hey, it's worth a shot. Could always have people refer to the inspiring song at the bottom of a post without actually uploading the song.

Posting MP3s of non-original material would be a violation of copyright laws, and would open Bart up to potential lawsuit. Remember him putting the smack down on someone last year for linking an MP3 from a major album? (And no it wasn't me.)
So I assume what gofer intends here is for people to write/record their own songs.
