It's the familiar smell of rubber and sweat. The squeaks of soles against hardwood. The bass, buzzers, whistles, cheers, loud silence, strong bodies, expecting eyes, passion, pain. That is why you love the game.
It's the rush when you meet your opponents—the taller and more formidable, the greater the flood of adrenaline through your veins. You're ready to do battle. It's the high that makes you think, "Nothing is better than this feeling." It's the first moment the ball is in your hands, when you tell yourself, "I'm home." That is why you love the game.
And if you really love it, you'll play till the sweat tickles your forehead and stings your eyes. You'll run till you're nauseous and the waistband of your underwear is dripping wet. You'll work for it, hurt for it, cry over it, think about it at night, and want it more than anything.
When it's over and your knees are hot and swollen, your limbs are rubbery, you're tired and hot and hungry and sticky and lightheaded and bruised, all you can think about is your next chance to do it again.
That is how you live the game.
