Carpet making and Persian carpets have been around for thousands of years as an art form. The oldest known carpet, called the Pazyryk Carpet, was discovered in Siberia in the tomb of a Scythian prince. It was made in the 5th century BC. Carpetmaking as a skill and artform was already highly advanced by this point, and is estimated to have begun nearly 3500 years ago. The carpet was likely made in an Achaemenid carpet production centre, possibly Perseoplis. (temple of the sun, legends of the Phoenix) The throne and tomb of Cyrus the Persian, who conquered Babylon, Egypt, and nearly the Greek city-states, were once covered in great carpets and silks. Alexander the Great marveled at the intricacy and beauty of these artisans. Very few examples remain from before the 13th century.

Carpetmaking suffered severe setbacks when the Mongols invaded and sacked the cities of Persia, slaughtering the citizens, but began to grow again soon afterwards.

The Safavid dynasty (1501-1722) marked a true renaissance in carpetmaking and directly influenced the products of today. Under the direction of the king, the finest examples of their history were closely examined, copied, and weavers re-taught the complex techniques required to make new ones. Their capital, Tabriz, is still a center of carpetmaking today.

I collect City carpets. City carpets are named generally for the city or region where they are produced, some villages are also covered under a specific city as they all produce the same type and motifs. Tribal carpets are usually of a geometric design, and of heavier (poorer quality) wool and cotton. They are all handmade. Although many places outside of the middle east reproduce the designs in machine-made carpets, the imperfections and irregularities make it easy to mark the difference. Mine are not quite flattened out yet after shipping and 2 years of storage. I'm finally living in a place where I can display them properly.

The main producers of City carpets are

Tabriz
Isfahan(Esfahan) I have 2 of these.
Qum(Qom) I have 3 of these.
Nain I have 1 of these.
Kerman
Kashan
Mashad

Tabriz carpets are typically wool and cotton, the dyes used come out a little dull. They just aren't as vibrant.

Isfahan carpets are acceptably the 2nd best carpets produced, with Nain and then Tabriz behind them.

Nain carpets are usually cream-colored with a variety of blues and small bits of red highlights in them. I find them very attractive.

Qum carpets, while they do not have their own style and copy from other places, are undeniably the finest works being produced. A fine cotton base (not often) or pure silk weave with knots no larger than the tip of a pen, they are intricate and highly pleasing to the eye and hand.

Kerman, Kashan, Isfahan, and Mashad designs are often copied by the weavers in Qum. I don't have any of the last 3 because they're more rare, usually larger, and insanely expensive. I don't have $8000 to spend on a single item although I wish I did.

In order below are: The Pazyryk Carpet, a 17th century (Safavid) Kashan carpet, a modern Tabriz carpet, and then my own collecton. Nain, Isfahan, Isfahan, Qum, Qum, Qum.

On a half related topic, i have something of extreme importance to ask from uber.

I need a picture of Hobbes from Calvin & Hobbes in either his slinky crouching about-to-jump pose or in his actual jumping (in order to tackle Calvin when he gets home from school) pose. I have search teh webz for ages and need someoone with the books (i know you're out there) to scan a nice resolution and decent sized picture of the above. Black and white is fine.

If someone could do this, i would totally suck their balls and maybe even send them a six-pack of my fav Aussie beer.
------------
Ask GodChicken, he has the book set of Calvin & Hobbes. I bet he'd scan it for you.

I'm sure I'll be chastised for this (perhaps because it was in the paragraphs that I didn't bother reading) but aren't rugs/carpets supposed to be on the fucking floor? Every 'modern' picture you have up there are of rugs with a dowel through them leading me to believe that they are being hung on a wall.

Yes, I understand the concept of displaying "art" but....oh never mind.
==========

Some go on the floor, some are framed and put under glass, some are hung like tapestries. Depends on what you buy and how much they cost you. I have a tribal one I keep on the floor.

The Qum carpets would sell for a retail value here in the US of approximately $6000 apiece. I'm not walking on that with my muddy boots.
