Especially for the first one.

I've probably played three videogames since 1993.

I used this guy's concept art: http://www.raphael-lacoste.com, but these are by no means exact replications.

I might be interested in doing "sidework," even though it wouldn't be sidework since I don't have a job. If anyone wants to email me regarding art/film/animation/graphic design/casting calls for porn, the address I use for Ubersite is lisa_marie7.at.hotmail.com.

it really irks me that the light on the main row of pillars on the first one looks like it is coming from left of center, bu the sun is shining from the right of center (and that big building would be blocking light from that direction on those pillars.

-------

I re-read that and it made no sense.

It looks like that main row of pillars comes straight out from the big ziggurat in the middle (not the biggest one on the left). the sun is shining from the left hand side of the row, but we see sun shining on the right hand side.

It is one of those things that hurts my head after I notice it.

Not bad by any means. I've never tried doing any kind of 3-d design myself so I'm sure how difficult it is, however I have played A LOT of video games. Based on what I've seen there are a few things wrong with these pictures.

First picture:
1. The buildings are all too different, some have squares while others have arches and triangles.
2. The fire looks hella fake
3. The textures on the buildings and terrian are really bad. They remind me of the old tiled windows backgrounds. Just a small pattern that repeats itself over and over agian.
4. There's no blending of the building's in with the terrain, it looks like they were just set on top of a table.
5. The shadows are wrong, way wrong. You have those big ass buildings with the sun behind them but the courtyard to the right of the pathway with the columns is brightly lit.
6. The sky is fuzzy and doesn't match the sharpness and clarity of the city.

Second picture:
1. The lighting is much better in this one, however the fire still looks really fake.
2. The beams that connect into the columns don't match, I'm not sure how to fix it but they seem to stick out more than anything else in the picture. I think the texturing might be wrong.
3.What the hell is the tan stuff on the wall to the far left?

What the hell is a furry?

It's pretty funny that some people think this is makeup, like when I'm alone at night I dress up like an animal and take pictures of myself. Then I call my nerd friends, we put on Europop and role play The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Thanks a lot for that link, FG. I might email you sometime in the future.
------------------------
A furry is someone who has a fetish for sexualising anthromorphic animal characters. For example; dressing up as a fox and having sex (or 'yiffing' to use their terminology) with a lady dressed in a zebra costume.

I do, however, think the idea of a bunch of people getting together and playing CS Lewis would be fantastic. Seriously, I could only dream of being part of such a group of free spirited dreamers.

Although I say that and I remember my teenage years when I studied theatre at school. Have you ever met those people? They are insufferable. All that hugging! Ergh!

That's the problem with these sorts of things; yes I want to be a totally liberated young man sampling life's pleasures like a fat man swimming through a lake of southern fried chicken, but it involves being such a flighty, whorish, cunt weasel. You just can't have your cake and eat it. This, perhaps, could be a lesson in appreciating diversity maybe? The whole "takes all sorts to make a world" thing.

Incidently, level design in games is a lot like stage design in plays. You have to be mindful of gameplay as well as general aesthetics. In practice it's not very hard: ensuring that the direction the player needs to go stands out from the rest of the environment can be easily done with lighting or placing unique (well, unique-ish)decorations around important doorways. If it's a point and click adventure then it may be neccesary to factor in subtle clues into the environment. It is important to liase with the game designiers. Not the developers though. Stay away from them, they're trouble.

sweet work.

top one:

the coloring/lighting seems too different between the foreground and the background.
the sun is awesome
there's no consistancy in the archecture. i know you're not an archetect, but if there's triangles on the top of the wall, the shapes on the front of the wall should be triangles too. the shapes on top of the square pyramids should be triangles. why are there different shaped pyramids? you know what i'm talking about?
some of the fires give light circles on the ground, some dont. wtf mate?

bottom one:

ambient light is weird. almost too consistant.
the way the light from the fire comes down the stairs is weird.
the ladder sucks. proportions are wrong. if stairs are one size, the rungs on the ladder should be similarly spaced.
the way the ropes are attached to the beams is weird. some just go into them, some just are there, not attached to anything.

overall they're both sweet.

Yes.

My only criticisms are that it needs more texture and most edges are not flat (see brick chimney in lower picture)

Great job though!

Really? I've always wanted to pick up Maya. I've only played with Solidworks, Hexagon, and a bit with ZBrush. For having been done by a single person, it's honestly pretty sweet work. Some tweaking and it would be awesome. Did you do the trees yourself too? I've always sucked at trees.

yeah, bump/ displacement. people use different terms. Look at the ground on the bottom left of the bottom pic. Map is so that it will make the light shadow with the texture. It juust looks a flat surface painted like stones, the light and shadow needs to reflect the texture. Most games look the way you have it, but may as wwell go all out for still pics. Altough, it may be hard to do with maya. Get 3DMax go something...

Also, the stairs look akward because the brick size doesn't match the rest of the picture. I'd suggest making the steps taller so that their size matches the briick size in the texture map you are using.

Re: games, I'm not that interested in them and I would prefer to work on movies. But at this point, as long as it makes that paper, I'll do anything short of blowing frat boys on video. Also, these aren't complete environments and they'll never be used for an animation of any kind. I modeled them specifically for the still images just to show what I can do.

They have bump maps--if you're talking about displacement maps, I've never done one but I could probably figure it out. I used Maya 7 to model them, imported the trees from Max 8, and did the post work in Photoshop.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

And if you have the ability to do some some material/ bump mapping it would greatly benefit the bottom pick. That way the brick patterns wouldn't appear flat on the polygonal surfaces. But once again, good luck running it real time.

I love what you did with the lighting and shadow effects in the first one. My only complaint, as said before, is the fire.

I always would like to know what program you used. I have some experience with Valve's HammerTools for some mods, but not much. I would love to learn some more advanced stuff.

The landscape in the first looks a bit flat, and could use a few people (as someone said) as the buildings look in far too good a shape to be ruins. As for the second, I like the sculpture/relief detail in the background, though the fire could use a bit of work. Also, the beams make it look less Egyptian dungeonish and more industrial minish. The grate works, though.

What program did you use?

most of the issues in the two are in the light...

for the first, you can show more definition of the light from the sun through the buildings.

for the second, the lighting of the fire is off...the light on the slope of the side would be extended and distorted most likely.

Some of the illuminations seem a little too bright. For instance...

1 - The area right around the towers near the sun might be too hazy.

2 - I think the light from the torches along the bottom are casting too much light compared to the other torches in this image.

3 - The fire in the second image needs more, um... definition?

Overall, these are incredible. I definately can't do shit like this.
Still hate ya, though...
