**
Ricky pushed his way through the door. A group of art students had reinforced it on both sides with sheets of plywood and aluminum siding, desk tops, toilet seats - anything that might stop or scatter a bullet. Roulette took her finger out of the hole in the wall and both teachers were silent. They looked at Ricky. He ignored them and scanned for an undamaged desk; they all wobbled or had gum on the seats or had no seat.
"Tomorrow I'm resigning," Roulette said, and scampered off in the direction that Ricky had come.
Hawkins clasped the bridge of his nose between his fingers. He rubbed his eyes with a thumb and index finger. He sighed. Ricky was rifling through his backpack, removing notebooks and textbooks and pencils. Hawkins saw this and smiled. The willingness to learn, the eagerness to live. Isn't the occasional display of these enough to sustain hope for a torn America?
"Good morning," Hawkins said. "Ricky, right?"
"Yes, sir. It's my second day here."
"It's good to have you. Where did you go to school before?"
"A town called Lynchburg."
Hawkins' face betrayed a grim understanding of the situation there; his eyes played the panic of seven and a half million citizens. An instant replay of hanged politicians and beheaded journalists, bombed out military installations and clogged interstates.
"Yes, I've heard of it." he said. "I've heard we're pushing back toward that area."
It was a lie, but Ricky felt a strange appreciation for it. "I don't know, I don't mind it here," he said. "I can pretty much live wherever. I don't think it matters."
"You'll get back there someday," he said, not ready to give up on the Eastern seaboard.
"I haven't done the reading for today," Ricky said, raising his copy of The Outsiders. "Things have been kind of crazy."
"Don't worry about it, you can follow along with our discussion in class." He checked the clock on the wall and it said 8:02. "If anyone shows up, that is."
Ricky opened the book and started to read, so Mr. Hawkins fell to thinking about what Madame Roulette had said. Roulette is right, he thought, it's time to take action. Not time to quit, but to take action. What we need is to heal these children, to rebuild a sense of community - what this school needs is a pep rally.
Students started trickling in at about 8:15 and Hawkins started to lecture at 8:30; half an hour late, but it was something.

Nice little bit of story, ready for some more murders and fighting though.
Keep em coming, each part is a bit short, perhaps some extended parts would be good.
"extended parts"

Seems to be getting deeper as it goes on, which is good.
I'll be gone for the next two weeks, so you'll be without my support. Keep it up though, if not for the entertainment of others, for yourself.
