Everyone wish Annie a happy fifth birthday!
On a coincidental note, it's also 5 years and 1 day ago that I signed up to Ubersite (I know what my user info says, trust me it's 6/11, I was dicking around on Uber when Firefly went into labor, it has to do with an old bug from years ago that the date is wrong), although really I've been on Uber since March of 2002 so I suppose it's not really my five year anything with Ubersite, although it kind of is.
Anyway, happy birthday kid, you've been a blessing to me since the day you came into being and I have enjoyed watching you grow through the early parts of your life. I can't help but think today is really less significant in terms of benchmarks than when you start kindergarten next month, but it is a day we recognize.
Enjoy it kid, it only gets rougher from here on out.

yay! babies.
I'm in the process of quitting my job (giving notice this week or next, depending on the new contract) and rediscovered übersite. I think the last time I participated here was maybe 4 years ago? What a blessing übersite was in my last boring job I wanted to leave. And what a great dad/übersiter Razor has been.

====================================================
You don't gain joy from attachment to things, you gain joy despite attachment. The qualities of the thing itself, and the way you respond to them, provide the joy. The attachment to that thing provides the suffering when that thing is no longer present. The goal is to enjoy things, to derive pleasure from them, without being attached to them, so that you do not suffer when they are not there.
Whether you're talking about your daughter, or a beautiful summer day, or your favorite food--I think the Buddha himself would say you should certainly enjoy those things and revel in that joy. But, you shouldn't be "attached" to that joy nor the things that cause joy, because none of them will be around forever. Impermanence leads to dukkha only if one is attached to impermanent things.

One of the sweeter things about year round schooling (I've been told) is that while everyone else in the US is scrambling to go on vacation at the "normal" times, you can travel for a hell of a lot less and places will be a lot less crowded on say, February 1st or October 10th or whatever.
------
that i get. but at the same time she won't ever go to things like summer camp or whatever cuz she won't be on the rest of the world's schedule. things that are fun and designed to go around the school schedule all of a sudden don't apply.
i think year round schooling is a great idea in general. just dunno now cuz it's such a mishmash. i'd rather my kids get educated but i wouldn't want them to be so separated from normal childhood stuff because of that schedule.

It's not so much avoiding personal suffering so much as it is avoiding suffering of others from our actions. It also depends on what level you attach yourself to the level of joy that you receive. Per say for instance, that you really enjoy your "TurboWench Blow-up Doll" but you know that you can't take it to work. All you do at work is think about that doll though, while you are away from it...now you are suffering because you can't be within its presence. That attachment is not good.
Removing yourself from attachment wouldn't prevent joy in the fact that if you never had it to begin with, you wouldn't know what you are missing. Back to the weird comparison, but if your cousin Chester never showed you the "TurboWench Blow-up Doll" in the first place than you wouldn't know what you were missing. Or, if you chose after being introduced to it, to not become attached to it through cognitive reasoning, than you'd still be able to gain "joy" from it without the attachment.
Tradeoff, in this instance, isn't a concern.
As for suffering of others. If you become too attached to an object or person, than it is suffice to say that someone else or some thing else may feel the repercussions from your actions. If you are spending more time with "Mary" than "Susan" may become jealous. If your attachment with Mary was non-existant in the first place than Susan would not suffer.
However, suffering can be avoided by a proper warning. For instance: a shakujo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakujo Of course this is a tangible warning but I think you get the idea behind it.
Oh, and your daughter is shitting in your yard.

Awesome. Good to hear.
On a random note, to any Buddhists out there... is it not true that you also gain joy from attachment? Wouldn't removing yourself completely from attachment not only prevent suffering but also prevent joy? Is that worth the tradeoff? Why is it assumed we need to avoid suffering anyway?
__________________________
Well Im not Buddhist but I've been reading a few of their texts...im currently trying to read through the Tibetan Book of the Dead...difficult as hell.
Anywho, I'd have to say that you are correct that you also gain joy from attachment...it seems to me that the goal of a Tibetan Buddhist (since there are different sects of Buddhism) is to be simultaneously attached and detached from everyone/everything...by that I mean the expression of pure compassion, and yet realizing the true nature of sentient beings and not causing attachment to these beings any more so than the attachment of the ground to the sky...if that makes sense. It is like the goal of the Tibetan Buddhist is to leave the world in the exact mindset of how you entered the world...that is why many Tibetan Buddhists do not want their family to be around them when they die, because seeing their family when they die could cause them to become attached to their physical body, which in turn (I wont go into detail about why this occurs) could effect their karmic nature in the transition bardo realm.
Hope that helped...I think I was fairly on the mark.

My sister is the real photographer, I'm decent but she's got professionals trying to convince her to go pro. She snapped the first two, I snapped the third, you can really tell the difference in skill.
To answer the pooping questions, she is dancing with her eyes closed, holding her skirt, not a care in the world.

Flapjack, if ratings mattered to me I wouldn't post politics etc.
However, when I put up a post about my kids birthday and you auto -2 it based on it being an uberversary post, it sort of makes sense to call you out on reading comprehension.
And honestly I don't feel like arguing with you or anybody else, I'm excited my kid is five and sad that I'm stuck working instead of outside playing with her.

Inion, we are just starting kindergarten here so I can't answer your questions about how easy or hard this will turn out to be. Firefly is staying at home one more year with our younger daughter before she enters preschool, so we don't have to find a solution... yet... from what I understand, the local YMCAs offer "3 weeks out of every 12" daycare in response to year round schooling, since there are four tracks that basically means 1/4 of the school age population is at the Y I suppose.
