With heavy heart, I am back.
After 4 days of music, sunshine and some of the wickedest pot I've ever seen, it's back to reality. This year, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was surely something for the record books.
90,000+ people
700 acres of farmland
100 different musical acts
3 cases of beer, a fifth of single malt scotch and about a half dozen plates of some of the greasiest fare you could ever hope to find at a get together of hippies, stoners and live music fans.
Here's a rundown of who I was able to see:
Ben Harper
Rocco DeLuca
Widespread Panic
Wilco
The Flaming Lips
The John Butler Trio (INSANE)
Keller Williams
Bob Wier with Ratdog
Tea Leaf Green
Tool
The Police
Micheal Franti and Spearhead
Hot Tuna
American Babies
The Clinch Mountain Boys
Gov't Mule with Lyrics Born and Mr. Lif
Aesop Rock
...not to mention about a dozen obscure groups representing bluegrass, hip-hop, New Orleans jazz, country, blues, rock and rockabilly. Just about every genre of music was expressed here and it was all in the company of likeminded individuals who all took 3 days out of their lives and just enjoyed the sun, tunes and being totally free for a while.
My highlight? Well - at the Keller Williams show, someone added to the thousands-large crowd a 10 foot stuffed likeness of Scooby Doo. It was tossed around like a rag doll amidst the sweaty, chaotic mass of hippies and eventually exploded into a massive mist of styrofoam stuffing. Being stoned and drunk yet completely aware, I was awestruck by it. I don't quite know why.
The trip back to Atlanta was a long and arduous one yet we made it to the city limits in under 4 hours. Not bad considering the exodus.
I already miss the gritty air, the smiles, and the sun setting over that massive landscape of music-themed structures.
See you next year, Manchester!

I'm going to see Tool on 7/18
Did you see any of:
The String Cheese Incident
Wolfmother
The White Stripes
The Roots
Any of the comedy shows (Lewis Black + Demitri Martin + Dave Attell + David Cross = awesome)
If so, how were they?
___________________________
String Cheese - didn't get to see 'em. Heard they were great.
Wolfmother - saw about half an hour, got bored. I don't dig that kind of music.
White Stripes - I dislike that band so I avoided that show
The Roots - One of the few bands I truly regret not seeing (I was at Wilco when they were on another stange)
Missed all the comedy shows because I was too busy getting baked at the music events.
...though I'm sure getting baked at a comedy show would have been a roaring good time.

How were the police?
______________
Crap. 100% crap.
They were slotted for a 2.5 hour time block and only played for an hour and a half. Pansies.
I went for Tool, Panic and Franti.

To answer your question, yes I have. Download Festival 2007, Donington Racetrack.
In other news, i'm going to see Tool and NIN dual headline in Bologna, Italy in August. It will be the most awesome thing ever.

So uh...
where the fuck is Scooby?
____________
I have a video of it actually. Couldn't post on Ubersite because of compatibility issues (cell phone video formats are not .mpg, etc.)
Needless to say - Scooby had a great time, aside from being gutted by fanatical treehuggers.

Nah.
And even my tried-and-true tactic of waving a twenty spot didn't do the trick.

Was there any good looking broads or was it mostly a hairy arm-pit, smelly pig-fest?
