ps, none of you fools have the slightest clue what a good piece of writing is. you see someone write more than a page without a shitload of errors or use of 'lol' and fall all over yourselves to suck their dick. i shudder to think about the spooge-fest that would currently be going on if a female (read: ghola) wrote this.

Is this true? I think it's obvious there's a level of understood shitcannery here, with more attention given to unimpressive or uninspiring pieces than they deserve. And yet if people didn't occasionally devote themselves to ideas or things that are below them - mindlessly so, and ever so carefree - then pop culture wouldn't exist. But I'm not talking about pop pieces here. I'm talking about good pieces of writing. So was iddqd before he went and jumbled it all up with lol references. Both forms of writing exist here, but fawning over one at the expense of the other doesn't mean people don't know what good writing is. It means they're bored and need to entertain themselves. I watched America's Got Talent off an on during the Sox game last night. This must mean that I wouldn't know quality television if it sat on my face, right?

The good writing, for the most part, floats by without a lolocaust or 148 reviews by angry Canadians. This doesn't mean it's not appreciated. Let's be honest: it's easier to laugh at poop jokes or cry foul about arrested 'journalists' than it is to carry on a multi-user, hours-long discussion about a quality piece of fiction. If it's good you're probably going to say "this was good" and move on. What else are you going to do? There's not a wealth of criticism to be found here. Lord knows I don't offer any. No one seems particularly concerned with finding out what a writer meant by X or was really going for with Y. They're much more intersted in discussing their iPod playlists, cracking wise about llama sex, or dropping a cameltoe reference. This could change, but I doubt it will. You can't really hope to change people. Especially here. Hmm. There's a lesson there for a guy with a hunting knife...

Anyway, not being particularly concerned is their right. But that in no way means they don't know what good writing is.

Even capable minds need a place to slum it once in a while. I'd say a site where the lowest common denominator is king makes a good fit, no?

So, my request is this: prove this guy wrong and show me what "good writing" you've found here. Link it, reference it, talk about it. I don't care. Just prove this guy wrong, heat this post and give me hits, many hits. I'm tired of being below Adam. And I'm sure I'm not the first guy to say that.

Very constructive project.

Talking to Ubersite as a whole is a really shallow thing to do. Not only do people's conduct here say little about them, even if it did, the impressions given show a wide range of abilities, interests, intelligences, etc. Saying "People on Ubersite are idiots" is as least as ignorant as saying "people from Maine are idiots."

When i read this, the first thing through my mind was an angry Irishman who taught speech and debate getting right up in my face and shouting "Ye don't have to cater to the least common multiple!" which was actually a fond memory as I loved that man, and so I smiled.

I know full well that the shite around here gets more attention in general, and yet I am not disuaded from making an attempt at "good" fiction. More than anything else though, Uber provides not just entertainment, but it is also a proving ground for my ideas, which get thrown onto a page or two, briefly proofread, then tossed up on the front page.

Essentially, when I put up "writing" and the piece gets more than 10 reviews, of which at least 80% are +2, then I know that was a good idea, one worth expanding on. If it tanks, it dies right there and I don't put any more time into it.

everything is either an experiment, or a joke, and either way my time here is rarely "wasted."

at no time do i pretend i am an executive authority on words - i jsut offer a fuckin opinion tom, which is better than continuing the circle jerk - again, in my opinion. heaven forfend someone actually say what they think, instead of trying to be everyones best friend.

ps, complaining about my lack of capitalisation is so two years ago. when i write a decent post now, i capitalise it and have done so for a long time, so you can put that auld chestnut back in the bag, you little douche.

I really get tired of iddqd pretending that he's the executive authority on everything that has to do with words. If you want to be taken seriously, burn that extra calorie every day and use the shift key to make the letters at the beginning of sentences and at the beginning of proper nouns bigger than the others.

I was at the Bjork concert and I said something funny when a girl with a shaved head presented me her angry-bull-dyke finger for budging my way in front of her. It was this:

And if I were you, Orgasmatron, I would think that a fitting response to this comment.

I've always found it odd that the parts of her
that I know best are already long dead; flaking off
in scaley bits and being rubbed away by exfoliating
creams.

Still, I love her skin, that part of her which
I can touch; that part of her I know better than any other.

Do I love her pancreas? I suppose I do. Her gallbladder, spleen,
and aorta; I must love them, mustn't I? Runny and glistening, invisable
and crucial, alive; they lie lovely and hidden, long unappreciated but resting
comfortable in the knowledge that when I tell her I love her, I mean them
as well.

Her vitreous humour which lets her see me too well, the fibrous
ends of every Golgi tendon organ which, in my clearer moments,
I thank for letting her dance like she does:
all these things I love; these live bits, bound so tightly in
a smooth dead sack.

I guess the trick is in not defining them; wrap them all, instead,
in the departed epidermis (which I look so willingly past) and touch it
reverently; a place for everything and everything in its place...

i dont think there is any good writing on this site. none.

the reason being is that anything that is 'good' will not be posted here because it just a fucking waste. i think that i have posted a few stories that are decent, but nothing that i would consider to be good. furthermore, you cant often write a good story in the REALLY limited space you have here before people start to think and say 'WTF IM NOT READING ALL THAT'. which is entirely fine, this site is a fuckaround place for bored individuals to stave off (or in some cases, exacerbate) insanity. but it means that the fiction, when posted, is almost NEVER going to be 'good'. at best, it is readable

using boredom as a justification of the over-appreciation of shit is fine, but its just as applicable to me writing people off for doing so. do you honestly think i sit in my room or at work and get all distressed because people are being nice to one another?

rob might, but thats because he has a giney. a bleeding giney.

no, i read, or skim, a piece of writing here, and i think about what i could possibly say to the writer to give them some kind of objective or critical advice. i may be (and probably usually am) off base with my comments, but at least im trying to do what id like others to do to me: tell me what they didnt like and why, or give me something more than a '+2 youre awesome slurpslurpslurp'.

ps. i <3 comments about my (or anyone elses) 'relevance' to the site. ITS A FUCKING WEBSITE, you sad pieces of shit. NOONE IS 'RELEVANT'. if the ever-cool orgasmatron, here was to leave, sure thered be some tears for a day or so, but youd all keep coming back, and new people woud join, and the world would keep turning.

Interesting, I guess, but the internet produces an ocean of shit, and why anyone would expect consistent quality in either fiction or criticism thereof on an open forum is deluded.

There's some good stuff on this site, and most can easily find it with a little effort.

I read the story in question, and while I rated it a +2, I could see how someone else might not see it that way.

One reviewer left a derisive comment on the post in question like "Everybody's a fucking critic," completely ignoring the fact that reviewing the work of others is pretty much half the attraction of the site. But if that's his opinion he's entitled to it.

The debate is ultimately pointless unless changes are made to the web site.

If taste and intelligence are a criteria for participation...one could guess the result.

While anyone serious about their writing could do a lot better than posting it on ubersite (and a lot worse), one who stops making an effort because they don't get hits or ratings is not a serious writer.
Like as not they will simply take their work elsewhere, which may make your experience poorer but will likely lead them to a more rewarding one.

Today, for example, is a 'contest' to find song lyrics, which isn't really interesting to me. But lots of people obviously like it, so that's the way it goes. Do what you like.

Bottom line: Uber, like almost everything else, is what you make of it. If a writer wants to use it as a serious forum, he just separates out the wheat, and learns pretty quickly uber is tits deep in chaff.

Nor should you have. People who eat fried bologna by the pack are some of the most slovenly bags of gheysauce this side of Idaho. They eat the packaging too, by the way. Fried.

Especially the part where you had to resort to cheating Shlongy out of an earned victory because you couldn't...I dunno...simply ignore him or something. That was my favorite.

But who could blame you? It wasn't like there was a FUPA to learn from. In these cases we sometimes become desperate and grasp at straws in our efforts to maintain control over the shifting and everchanging sands of our lives.

Someone should just collect a given week's shenanigans, flame wars and noteable quotes into a quick-and-dirty tabloid type post. That way everyone can catch up on the nonsense and avoid all the needlest shitpostery. It'd be a good way for Tiger to transition out of her random five questions and slip into another weekly post-type.

Please. All that you miss on the shit posts is forensicgirl making a silly bicth of herself.

I know what you mean. I think it's because it's easier for someone to shoot from the hip about someone they know relatively nothing about and/or posture about _____ than it is to really try to engage someone else in a meaningful discussion. It takes less work to tell Shlongy he should tattoo "Your Ad Here" on all the forehead his retreating hairline has revealed than it does to look for connections between characters in kaos-king stories.

And the last thing anyone here wants to be found guilty of is Making an Effort.

I probably would "put forth" more effort.

Actually do second parts in series, do more short stories, who knows what all.... if it were "rewarded"

Uber IS a place of slumming it and ha-ha rabbit, but that's conditioning. When I first came here it was for the good bits of writing. I'm still here for that, although I do enjoy the shenanigans. I would much prefer to have more actual reading and banter in the reviews on those posts that shit posts that I don't want to click on at all.

Which brings me to the whole "clique click" - it feels like if you DON'T click on the shit posts, you miss the good banter - leading of course to the propogation of shit posts designed to create banter, which leads to shit posts that are just plain shitty because the posters don't "get" the difference between acceptable shit and crap shit. So yes, Uber is a self-conditioning vicious cycle. (the washer is on permanent "Spin")

You're pretty much bang on. Nobody reads the good writing. It gets fewer hits and fewer reviews per hit than whatever SPT stuff gets thrown out there. This isn't a place where the effort involved in putting together a well-written piece gets rewarded proportionately, so we don't, as a group, put forth the effort.

I'm curious what percentage of users would put forth the effort if it was in fashion.

There's a lot of good writing on the site. Let's face it, "good writing" that one would find in a book could have easily started as one of the tales found here.

I agree with everyone who has pointed out that it is entirely subjective, I agree that a +2 doesn't mean it is something of profound literary value...just something I liked at the time for whatever reason.

But, in the spirit of sharing some favorites...

http://www.ubersite.com/m/53093 great series
http://www.ubersite.com/m/78144 Ummm...yeah.
http://www.ubersite.com/m/64996 another great series
http://www.ubersite.com/m/40647 part one of my favorite series here.
http://www.ubersite.com/m/52923 another fucking series...I can't help myself.
http://www.ubersite.com/u/Bigmike yep, all of it. I rarely dislike something of Bigmikes.

I could go on, there is a lot of what I call "good writing" on the site. It's why I come back.

That said, Circe has posted some pretty damn well written pieces (you knew that was coming, didn't you). Right off the top of my head, charminglybeef, JoeyG, and Snark have all had their moments.

Is anyone here a Kurt Vonnegut or a Mark Twain or a Neil Gaiman or Jane Austen? Of course not. But there are some credible Douglas Adams, Stephen King, or David Sedaris impersonators, and that's probably about as good as you can expect to find on a free forum devoted to rape and har-har rabbits.

I am not an English teacher, I have never taken any English courses, so surely good writing is something personal to me. You can only judge it by your own standards, iddq can say whatever he likes and rate posts however he likes, that's fine by me, but don't give other people a standard to live by, that makes you as bad as the religious fanatics.

I...I'm not trying to offer standards of what makes good writing.

Would you like a helmet?
