I'm a young dude at 25, and I haven't heard everything that the musical world has to offer. For instance, I have absolutely no idea what the first Dinosaur Jr. or the first Sonic Youth album sounds like. I don't know the feeling of seeing Joey Ramone downstroke furiously in person, and I never saw Pete Townshend windmill the shit outta his guitar. I have no clue how angry Chuck D must've been when he wrote "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back." I'm too young even to have seen Sublime play in Austin just before Bradley died. I'm pretty young. I don't know what the 10 greatest songs ever are. Nobody does. Rolling Stone magazine was brave and stupid enough to assume. The one thing I do know is that no list is conclusive. That's what kicks so much ass about music. It can't be contained by a simple list. Here, without apologies, are my ten favorite songs of all time....
1. "Brown-eyed Handsome Man," the Buddy Holly version of a Chuck Berry song--sorry, Buddy did it better. The way Chuck did it sounded just like "Maybellene." When Buddy Holly sang that tune, it sounded like the definition of respect. Buddy was also a better guitarist. Go ahead haters, start hating.
2. "Sorrow," by Bad Religion--Simply the most concise, melodic, and empathetic vindication of our current state I've heard. As a song, perfectly structured; as a scripture, a great view from above of the world.
3. "Play a Train Song," by Todd Snider--Here's a song about a dude who doesn't give a shit and dies for it. Perfectly structured in its beat and verse, this is what Carl Perkins woulda been playing if he hadn't turned into a drunk and sold out. "I got this old black leather jacket, I got this pack of marlboro reds, I got this stash here in my pocket, I got these thoughts in my own head-the right to run until I gotta walk or until I gotta crawl, This moment that I'm in right now and nothin' else at all..."--C'mon, that's incredible.
4. "Wagon Wheel," by Old Crow Medicine Show--This song edged "Brown Eyed Girl" outta the top five. I know for a fact that this group came from New York and they have no place in traditional Bluegrass music, but fuck it. They did it right. I've seen skinheads, skaters, punks, hardcore kids, and my own mother sing along with this songs.
5. "The Weight," by The Band--Duhhhhhhh...........One of the greatest collectives that played with every great artist from Dylan to Van Morrison. The opening plucks are instantly recognizable, as are the lyrics-"Take a load off, Fannie, take a load for free; Take a load off Fannie, and you put the load right on me." Jesus, when I hear that shit I crumble...every time.
6. "Brown Eyed Girl," by Van Morrison--My dad used to play this on vinyl every morning and start bacon on the stove before anyone was awake. This is his favorite song. I always associate this song with bacon and with my dad. If you fuck with my dad, he'll kick your ass.
7. "Baba O'Rily," by The Who--I always get pissed when people call this song teenage wasteland. I also hate that it's in Nissan adverts. In the end, though, I don't care. I'm glad I get to listen to this song whenever I want. And I do. Every fucking day.
8. "And Now We Dance," by The Vandals--The best song about circle pits ever.
9. "40 oz. to Freedom (the whole record)," by Sublime. I couldn't choose. This album is one gigantic song anyways. Brad Nowell was the most prolific, imaginative, and nihilistic artist to catch the early swells in the past 15 years anyhow.
10. "All Hell Breaks Loose," by The Misfits--Please play this one at my funeral, just so everybody knows how wrong I was....

There never really is a good time
There's always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
Steppin' out, I tried to fix it
Pulled a thumb out of that hole
Give me ingredients, I'll mix it
How can you move without a goal
There never really is a good time
There's always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
An excuse is all you're in for
The abuse is all you crave
Sure you know just what is in store
Wait and see if I'll behave
There never really is a good time
There's always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
There's a time, just let me know now
When it's with you I'll be glad
That I was right there just to show you
At least it's more than what you had
There never really is a good time
There never really is a good time
There's always nothing much to say
Pretty good, not doing that fine
Getting up most every day
