This song is quite frankly some of the most delicious audio wonderment you can find. The song is not only enriched by the lyrics but the soundscape created by Mr. Reznor is astonishing on it's own. It holds both simplistic beauty in it's melody, as well as dense layers of sonic art that leave the lisenter with ripples of emotion flowing through their bodies. It is a love song, a sad song, a rememberence song. It is, more importantly, an achievement.
The lyrics themselves hold such emotional charge that it's almost impossible for myself to listen to this song without reflecting on life every time I hear it. The longing and slight sarcasm, combined with an obvious distaste (coupled with affection) for life, love and god, build into a crescendo of such magnitude, that it's sometimes hard to not lose control of your emotions. This is the sort of song that will root itself into your psyche. You have been warned.
