Here is what prompted me to start this rant.
So my television is tuned to Fox, because I listen to Cops while reading a book. If there is an interesting situation on Cops I will set down the book for a few minutes and watch the beatdown. The episode isn't that interesting, so I focus mostly on the story I am reading. In the background Cops ends, and Blind Date comes on. Normally if I notice this I will turn the channel on general principals alone, but I am kind of engrossed in the chapter I am reading, so forget to change the channel.
Whilst reading I hear some retard trying to win the affections of the object(did I say object? I meant subject...). He himself is a philosophy major going to a catholic church school, she a social worker who is into saving kids and apparently loving teh godzors. The reason I stopped reading my book and actually payed attention to this filth?
The questions the douche is asking. It isn't like the normal braggadocio which one would normally be accustomed to when listening to a guy put out his A list lines. This guy is trying to be deep, yet coming off lame in the process. He doesn't notice that his lines aren't working, and is so wrapped up in himself, probably because he is so smart (he is going to be a philosophy major!), that he doesn't notice that the chick isn't into him at all. He keeps trying to ask all sorts of deeeeep questions, not listening to the answers at all, gloating in his smugness of the fact that he has the knowledge to even ask the question at all. If he wasn't wrapped up in himself he would have probably had a chance to win her over, or at least get some, but he is too busy trying to show her how damn smart he is. You know, typical Philosopher.
Suddenly all this comes into focus. I have seen this behavior before, and had to live through it. Most of the college kids I have known have exhibited this behavior at one point or another, and most students drop the attitude when they have to get a shitty job in the real world. But the attitude never seems as strong in most of them as it does in hippies and philosophers,I suppose they are almost one and the same, but at least hippies like drugs.
I have never been a fan of hippies. They smell, their choice in music sucks, the men are hairy and the women are hairier. Their clothing is ugly, and most of the time their hair is full of bugs and crap. But they at least STAND for something, damnit! They hate the man and all the man encompasses. They are for the environment, and hate gas guzzlers, even though they sometimes drive crappy old VW busses( I don't know, do these things get good gas mileage?). They want to live commune style, so they can subvert more kids to their way of thinking.
But a philosophy major? He generally stands for nothing, and only cares about his questions. Precious questions! Why dont you do something that benefits everyone more, and go off yourselves? Quit asking your jag-off questions, and go do something, fag! Sure, back in the early days of man yours was an important profession, helping mankind to expand his mind. Newsflash, its 2007 now, we are pretty well good in that aspect! What are you even going to use your hard payed-for knowledge on, once you gain it? Not a whole lot of jobs out there in the market for a smarter-than-thou prick who has no real skills. Maybe you should have taken economics and computer sciences instead of ethics and philosophy, you stupid puke! You are almost as bad as the emo-art fag, beating off in his basement in his mom's clothes, thinking about the next "sculpture" he will make which looks like shit dropping off the roof. At least he might make some money with his shit, though..
Sorry, that was a long rant and I thought I needed to get it off my chest.
Please -2 die me now!

Hey, if you are real, can we hang out sometime? I got this really cool trick I want to show you. What I do is take a padlock, put it in a sock, then take coat hangers and stick them in my sock. You watch as I spin it over my head and fucking mash your teeth down your throat, you pathetic piece of dick spittle.
Get a fucking REAL life, you moron.
By the way, we'll call the game killicopter.

A TRUE philosopher studies not the enlightenment of their predecessors but reaches for the enlightenment of ones own mind. You may use the great ones as a guide, but then you are only a student of their thought. True philosophers DO still exist, in the most unlikely of places, and need no piece of paper to tell them they are so. The philosoper's path is his alone to forge and he is well aware that only he can show himself the way.
Dole Office Clerk: Occupation?
Comicus: Stand-up philosopher.
Dole Office Clerk: What?
Comicus: Stand-up philosopher. I coalesce the vapors of human existence into a viable and meaningful comprehension.
Dole Office Clerk: Oh, a *bullshit* artist!

I noticed that once I started college everything just became some huge contest where every idiot lives to prove that they are more original or wittier than everyone else, and God forbid they don't get the last word in their pointless arguments. It's so annoying.
I think the reason they don't stop is because those who are truly intelligent don't feel like taking the time to explain to them why they're horribly wrong.

Kind of like on-line arguments, but at least at college you could head butt people if they got too obnoxious. that never fails as a witty comeback.

There are many different classifications of Philosophy: Past Studies, Logic, Ethics, Metaphysics, Comparative Theology, and Aesthetics just to name a few. Each is vitally important for their perspective fields. History majors take Past Studies while Art majors take Aesthetics. Most Buisness majors are required to take Ethics. The only people taking ALL of those classes are student specializing in Philosophy, and 90% of them are turning right around and going into teaching/research.
Your disgust of one of the most ancient forms of Formal Thinking kinda makes you look bad...

Where I went to school, which is a promenant Ag/Eng school in America's midwest, there is a Liberal Arts program in which one may study towards a degree in Philosophy. At the time in which I was attending this school, one of the professors in this school who tought a sophomore-level class, each semester held a couple class sessions outside. Regardless of the weather - heat, rain, snow, whatever. Invariably one of the students would ask why the class is not indoors where it's comfortable, and the answer would be, "Because Physics manifested in Science and Engineering allow us the freedom to pursue our Meta-Physics. Thus Science and Engineering are invaluable to philosophers."
Too bad there wasn't a similar little lesson about the importance of Philosophy for us engineers.

I dont care if someone thinks I exist. If they dont think I exist then they are a tard supreme, because through our interactions I do exist...crap, now I am becoming a philosopher.
And Mudkips, I do think we are better than they were back in the Greco-Roman days, or at least I am. We couldn't be arguing on teh intarwebs if we werent...
Thats the way I see it, though

Then you still miss the point, because your not asking someone if YOU exist, your asking if THEY exist.
And you should also notice that I agreed with you in the point of not paying to learn these ideas.

Then you are a cancer on this planet.
Because your thoughts will never be your own.
----
Actually, my thoughts ARE my own. I can ask myself questions, and dont pay an institution to teach me these questions. I dont need another to tell me to ask someone if I truly exist, for I KNOW I exist.

Let's think about the advances in medicine and psychology.
Let's think about the GWOT (Global War On Terrorism).
Let's think about anything beyond a 30 second television spot.
Let's think for ourselves.
Are we pretty well good?

I'm all for philosophy, but I do agree it shouldn't be studied in an institution of learning. I had an interesting conversation with my broyher-in-law about whether or not you exist after you leave my field of perception (sight, hearing) (and by "my" I mean everybody). It;s the whole tree falling in the woods but with some physics thrown in and a little biology.
This guy obviously hasn't met anyone that could answer his questions properly. I mean, he's probably asking standard questions about life, perspective, god, love, rationality, straight out of a text book he memorised. A true thinker doesn't need to go to a university to learn this sort of stuff. He/She/It/Id will seek it out and absorb it's views.
But you probably should have written out what questions he was asking. It would have broken up the hatred you were portraying.
Big Love,
Progr3ss
