I couldn't sleep for shit last night. I haven't skated in weeks. It tugs at me. All I could think about was dropping in, manualing across the top of the pyramid at southside, hitting the vert wall, pumping back in for speed, and launching backside over the hip.
All I could think about was a pop-shuv up the curb, a frontside shuv to get my board right, and a kickflip off the ledge. In my mind I caught it with my back foot and landed right on the bolts. I rode away further down the blacktop to where my buddy's rail went over the grass gap and I did a boardslide, FAST. I pushed and pushed, in my head.
I remember when breaking a board was horrible, and I'd have to save for weeks to get a new one so I could go live again. Nowadays, I have THREE COMPLETE BOARDS! Can you believe it? Back in the day I'd ride 'em until the tails were razors and the wheels were a good 5 mm smaller and the trucks were showing axle. I'm spoiled rotten on skateboards now and I don't even skate every day. I've turned into one of those "collector" fags, not even thinking about where my next stick's gonna come from.
My last board came off Ebay, for God's sake! It's a Ray Barbee Powell Peralta, by the way, with ratbones and gullwings. My first setup reconstructed. I've skated it twice, once at a park and once at a local parking block session. I could still boneless the hip at the park and I could still slappy the block, but it was all just bullshitting. It was like eating Mexican food in Chicago. I felt like such a fraud. When I was a kid at the park, I scorned the old guys doing sweepers and smith stalls like I was the shit with my flatground kickflips. Now I go to a park and I'm THAT guy.
I saw the last enjoi video. I liked it plenty. I've kept up with the professional scene for the years when I wasn't hardcore skate-or-die. I can see Matt Hensley in Jason Adams, and I know that Jerry Hsu is fucking amazing. Probably the best thing to ever happen to skating in my time, yours, and the next, is Danny Way. The guy doesn't have any stinkbug vert-foot on street, and that shit's awesome. That, and he's seemingly impervious to pain. That's a skater.
But really, the greatness of any given skater can't be judged by his or her skill. It can't be judged by originality or pioneering ways.
I was falling on my ass all day at the park the other day, and then I landed a gnarly tweaked-out lein off the launch(still so proud of that). A kid who looked about 12 came up to me and asked if I could kickflip off it. I told him probably not, and he said, "I can, I betcha!"
I said, "Yeah, you're better than me, but I've been loving this for 17 years, so I win!"
He rode away laughing, and I realized that I was the "park dork." I was THAT GUY.
You know what? I like being that guy. I like that this weird thing that all these kids love has been a staple of my life since I was 8. I like that even if I don't skate enough anymore, I still smile like an idiot every time I do.

Skateboarding is a great fave of mine since i was about 8 or 9.Now i am in my 40s-still board-but don't bounce back like i used to! my 15 year old son boards-he's way better than i was-sometimes we skate together- people think we're brothers. welcome to Uber skate freak- post pics of yer boards and tricks. This was like reading a technical manual and being unfamiliar with the entire purpose of the device. Too much terminology that made no sense.
The point came across, but the writing and format made me cry.
