I had not fiddled about with pastels in a while - so I set to drawrin' up the sky last evening.

Just finished up the pump n' grass a short while ago... and now I share.

Happy 4th of July for all you American types.

Happy Wednesday for the rest of us.

Have you ever brushed out oil pastels using something like turpenoid?

It creates a great watercolor-like effect on canvas.

I just stretched and gesso'ed 3 canvases yesterday, all excited & ready to go.

Now I'm just staring at them...

---

Yupper - that is how I did this one: http://www.ubersite.com/m/100500

I drew out the main bits with oil pastel on a canvas and then painted over it with a solution of mineral spirits (like turpentine - but natural)

Get painting!

Interesting.

I don't actually see that transparent effect you describe - to me it looks solid with some some sky reflections.

There is a BIT of a break in there, but not enough.

----

It's there, look closer. I see the sky reflections, but that's not what I'm talking about. Divide the pump up into four sections : base section; second section; third section; head. Look carefully at the middle of the second section and you will see that the very light pink/white carries right through the pump. It is transparent. Other obvious spots are the upper part of the third section, and on the head right above the spout.

---

hmmm...

Yeah, I can see that now. I guess in my mind I just associated those bits of colour with reflections - but you are right there is a continuation of the skyline in those places which could cause that interpretation for sure.

Cool.

It wasn't something that was intentional, no - and I did put the pump in there afterwards.

===
the sky reflections you made look like the continuity of the sky. especially that yellow patch topped with a white line at the bottom third of the pump. perhaps you drew the pump after you did the sky?

i'm not criticizing as i can't draw for shit. i just wondered if it was intended to make a confusing effect of the sky looking like ambiant fog at the same time.

It's the transparency of the pump that fucks up the perspective and makes the pump seem to be in the background, even though logically you try to place it in the foreground. Grass is well done.

+2 for using pastels
-1 for pump.

Phantom pumps fucking suck ass. ;P

Interesting.

I don't actually see that transparent effect you describe - to me it looks solid with some some sky reflections.

The issue I have with it - having looked at it a little longer - is the horizon line and the bottom part of the platform should never have been on the same plane like that... I think that definitely throws off the depth perspective a little bit.

There is a BIT of a break in there, but not enough.

oh, and the Phantom Pumps rock! I, like, totally have all of their EPs.

um that tends to also refer to what you put on the paper to make the image. pastels? type of paint? what?

---

um... I did mention what I used in the opening blurb so I thought you just wanted to know what it was on... but to confirm it was, indeed, pastels.

Although to be even MORE specific - the sky was drawn with the oil pastels last evening - and then this morning I took a digital shot of what I had done and brought it into photoshop where I touched it up a little. I knew I wanted a water pump - so I then searched for a suitable reference online, edited that, digitally manipulated it so it matched the composition I was trying to achieve and then drew over top of it using my wacom tablet. I then balanced the image out with some grass that I also drew with my tablet.

Saved it. Exported it. Posted it.

All n' all it was rather fun - good to get drawing again.
