Dear Potato,
We grew up together. Knew each other all our lives. Remember the time that dog peed on us? I covered you, kept you safe. It was no big deal. I spent our childhood looking after you and I developed a tough skin because of it.
I wonder if you ever really appreciated me. You didn't think it was a big deal when we were severed from one other and I was tossed in the trash, to rot along with all the rest. You didn't look like you suffered without me. You didn't look like you missed me.
Well, I guess the joke's on you, because while I've been slowly rotting away down here, you were cut up into pieces, dipped in flour and deep fried in a pot of grease.
Yes, I heard your pleas. I heard your screams as the grease lapped and bubbled around you. I heard it all and I didn't care.
Only when you were sprawled in pieces across a dinner plate, did I begin to worry. I saw the hunger in that man's eyes. I saw him lift you to his wide-open mouth. I saw his yellowed teeth grind down around you. He swallowed, wiped his mouth and you were gone.
And that's when I knew that I loved you always.
