Do the following:
1: Click "Start"
2: "Run"
3: Type "msconfig"
4: hit "Enter" key
5: Click "startup" tab at top
6: Uncheck every single one of those little boxes you see there except perhaps for your Norton Antivirus (if you want to keep it...I recommend ditching it in favor of AVG Free Edition like I said in my last review. If you decide to follow my advice there, go ahead and uncheck Norton as well.)
7: Restart the computer
8: When computer restarts it will say something like "you are currently using selective startup...blah blah blah"
9: Check "don't show this message again" and click "ok"
Your computer will probably run 10X faster already.
Now, when that is done, do the following...
1: Go to Start, control panel, add/remove programs and take out everything you and your parents don't use, including Norton Antivirus.
2: Download and install AVG Free
3: Download and install "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Ad-Aware SE Free Version". You can find both by google searching.
4: After these are installed, update them by using the "check for updates" buttons in the respective programs, then run them one at a time. These programs will scan for malware, adware, spyware...all the shit that slows your system down after a while. At the end of the scans, make sure the little boxes beside the items it finds are checked and get rid of whatever it tells you to.
5: Restart computer.
6: Click "start", "all programs", "accessories", "system tools", "disc defragmenter"
7: Click "defragment"
This will take a while, especially if you've never done it. Leave it alone till it completes.
When it's done, restart the computer and voila! It should run like it did the day you got it.

Do the following:
1: Click "Start"
2: "Run"
3: Type "msconfig"
4: hit "Enter" key
5: Click "startup" tab at top
6: Uncheck every single one of those little boxes you see there except perhaps for your Norton Antivirus (if you want to keep it...I recommend ditching it in favor of AVG Free Edition like I said in my last review. If you decide to follow my advice there, go ahead and uncheck Norton as well.)
7: Restart the computer
8: When computer restarts it will say something like "you are currently using selective startup...blah blah blah"
9: Check "don't show this message again" and click "ok"
Your computer will probably run 10X faster already.
Now, when that is done, do the following...
1: Go to Start, control panel, add/remove programs and take out everything you and your parents don't use, including Norton Antivirus.
2: Download and install AVG Free
3: Download and install "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Ad-Aware SE Free Version". You can find both by google searching.
4: After these are installed, update them by using the "check for updates" buttons in the respective programs, then run them one at a time. These programs will scan for malware, adware, spyware...all the shit that slows your system down after a while. At the end of the scans, make sure the little boxes beside the items it finds are checked and get rid of whatever it tells you to.
5: Restart computer.
6: Click "start", "all programs", "accessories", "system tools", "disc defragmenter"
7: Click "defragment"
This will take a while, especially if you've never done it. Leave it alone till it completes.
When it's done, restart the computer and voila! It should run like it did the day you got it.

Making files contiguous can make a lot of difference in drive search time. But you're right, no reason to compress. In fact, that's probably a bad idea.

If you decide to get a new computer, as long as it uses a standard IDE Hard Drive, I'd take the hard drive out of the box you're using now, wipe it clean, and use it as a secondary drive in your new machine. That'll give you 50% more storage capacity!
If you need help doing that, just ask. Or google it, it's easy as piss. Seriously, a monkey can do it.

Yeah it's defragmented regularly and compressed/decompressed/whichever seems to work the fastest. And spyware etc is pretty much taken care of. This msconfig thing though sounds good, except most of the popups are because I tried to upgrade media player and it cottoned on to the fact that we have a pirated version of windows. I will give it a shot though, thanks. Though it will be kinda pointless since I'm getting a new one.

The one I am using now was due to be thrown out in 2004 by my uncle's work until he saw the one we had before that (which was bought in '97 and hadn't been upgraded since).
The reason we do not upgrade the computer is that it is my parent's belief that if a computer "works", there is simply no need for a different one. After all, why change it if it works??? The other reason is that when, after I tried to convince them that it is essentially broken (given that it downloads stuff at 21kbps,isn't compatible with anything, freezes up when you try to use more than 3 programs at once, and about five or six different unavoidable prompts need to be dealt with upon startup before using it), they began checking the outside of the tower for scratches and dents.

Thorpe, listen...
Do the following:
1: Click "Start"
2: "Run"
3: Type "msconfig"
4: hit "Enter" key
5: Click "startup" tab at top
6: Uncheck every single one of those little boxes you see there except perhaps for your Norton Antivirus (if you want to keep it...I recommend ditching it in favor of AVG Free Edition like I said in my last review. If you decide to follow my advice there, go ahead and uncheck Norton as well.)
7: Restart the computer
8: When computer restarts it will say something like "you are currently using selective startup...blah blah blah"
9: Check "don't show this message again" and click "ok"
Your computer will probably run 10X faster already.
Now, when that is done, do the following...
1: Go to Start, control panel, add/remove programs and take out everything you and your parents don't use, including Norton Antivirus.
2: Download and install AVG Free
3: Download and install "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Ad-Aware SE Free Version". You can find both by google searching.
4: After these are installed, update them by using the "check for updates" buttons in the respective programs, then run them one at a time. These programs will scan for malware, adware, spyware...all the shit that slows your system down after a while. At the end of the scans, make sure the little boxes beside the items it finds are checked and get rid of whatever it tells you to.
5: Restart computer.
6: Click "start", "all programs", "accessories", "system tools", "disc defragmenter"
7: Click "defragment"
This will take a while, especially if you've never done it. Leave it alone till it completes.
When it's done, restart the computer and voila! It should run like it did the day you got it.

See, this is why computers shit me - completely different opinions from people based on the same information. Thanks for the info ETS though.
Just using it for simple stuff like browsing the internet, storing photos etc. but I would like to do a lot of it at the same time, and without massive loading times which it might not snap out of, and be able to buy programs like Flash and photoshop and stuff. Though if I ever felt the need to edit a film or play a super graphic intensive video game I would like the piece of mind I imagine comes with knowing it is not a pipe dream.
It is 4:20 AM and I am being purposefully verbose in comments that do not require it, which is a sure sign that I am ready to go to sleep.

Right now I have a *reads front of computer* "Dell Dimension XPS T500" (don't know, don't know, 19GB Hard disk, keyboard and mouse, 13 inch shitty curved monitor that cannot be turned off, Windows XP pirated, expired pirated Norton Antivirus 2004) and I hate it.

Depends on what you use it for and how much you have to give for it.
Unless you're going to be editing films and playing super graphic intensive video games at the same time on two different monitors or some shit, that computer should be just fine. You might want to expand your hard drive space at some point so you don't have to keep cleaning it out, or get a DVD burner to put in it, but it looks to me like you should be fine on RAM and processor speed.

Fuck Norton! It screws up more than it helps. It's too invasive, and it just gets in the way half the time. Plus, I suspect that the makers of Norton and McAfee antivirus suites create many of the viruses out there to secure the need for their products...no shit. So fuck 'em. Get AVG instead.
