I was at my uncle's house in Toronto this past weekend killing some time before we had to head out to my cousin's wedding. I was dressed in my finest, and watching the idiot box for a while.
Satellite TV is incredible. 500 channels of nothing. Then I stumbled upon a classic; Walker, Texas Ranger.
I know what you're thinking, "Wow, stop posting about TV you dumb shit". Well, fuck off, because I have a strong bond with that show.
I was in grade 5, and had just moved to Ontario from San Jose, California. It was quite the change, but I adapted quickly. People made fun of my American accent, but I made friends fast. This was also the time I had met my grandma, and all of my cousins. I was overjoyed to meet family that I didn't even know I had. Immediately, I developed a close bond with my uncles and cousins because they are fun and easygoing. My grandparents, however, were another story.
I hadn't grown up around them, so what would I even talk to them about? It was strange. Here are two elderly people giving me all the love and affection I could ever want, and I was always being distant.
I went to elementary school close to their house, and after school I would go there.
I don't know when it started, but it became our ritual fast. I would walk in, and my grandma would immediately make me something to eat. Whether I was hungry or not, it wasn't an option. Funny how grandparents are, they are always eager to stuff you full of food and spoil you rotten. It's funny how you ever appreciate it until you're all grown up.
After my snack, at 3.30 sharp, my grandma would turn to channel 20 and watch "Walker, Texas Ranger".
The woman barely spoke a lick of English, and yet she loved to watch Walker. I couldn't figure out why she loved it so much. At first I thought she just enjoyed watching Chuck Norris kick some ass, and then I realized she just enjoyed watching the good guys win.
This continued every day throughout my time at that elementary school. For that one hour, we would watch Chuck Norris duke it out with villains, and laugh together at his cheesy one liners. I wasn't even sure if she understood what was being said, but somehow she always laughed at his jokes. She wouldn't understand a word you'd say, but as far as Chuck goes, she knew. She laughed at the American customs, and at how different they were from us.
When she passed I seemed so disconnected. I can't even remember the funeral, or if I cried. Hell, I'm sure I cried. But nothing compared to everyone else. I was in shock, disbelief even. It didn't really hit home until I came home from school the next day at 3.30 and couldn't even bring myself to turn on the TV. It wasn't the same without her. It wasn't about the show, it was about having something in common.
I can't help but smile to myself when I see Walker on TV, and think about the good times we had watching the show. Some might think it's sad that the only bond I had with my grandmother was a stupid TV show. Well, fine, it's stupid. For all of you Chuck was around for the lowbrow entertainment. For me, he helped bridge an age and cultural difference. Funny how that works, Chuck brought a young grandson and his elderly Punjabi grandmother together.
Thanks Chuck.

Chuck Norris jokes have plateaued.
---------------
I didn't see any jokes in here, Sonny Jim.
This made me think about watching Benny Hill with my grandfather when I was way too young to see it, and made me smile, thank you.

"the idiot box" is a stupid expression, which is probably why it fits nicely within the context of this stupid post.
