Pigeons pick away at puke on the sidewalk.
A girl about 14 years old is stretched out in a doorway,
half covered by a dirty pink blanket.
Seagulls call out overhead.
Last night, last week, last year hang heavy in the air.
I kick a needle case out of my way.
I step over spit and piss.
Two men argue in a alley as I pass.
"Fuck you." is the extent of it.
The absence of wit and shame is apparent.
I take the last drag of my cigarette and throw it.
Within an instant someone comes from behind me to pick it up.
They were waiting for me I realise.
Waiting for me to be done.
I hear a man yelling about a block away.
Oddly enough he blends in.
Anywhere but here, someone would run to help him.
Main and Hastings the street sign reads.
A bird shits and it hits the ground next to me about 2 feet away.
Fuck.
I'm lucky.
That was close.
