Chapter 1: http://www.ubersite.com/m/110119

The snow was just beginning to fall, making the Christmas lights around them twinkle and shine as they walked out to the small, rusted Toyota that they shared. The plan was all laid out. It would not take long to drive to the hospital, and even less time inside. They would simply walk in the front doors, over to the nursery, and pull the fire alarm that was outside it.

Jaime had held a job at the hospital as a janitor a few years back, until she was caught stealing food from the patient's pantries. It was hard for her to find a job with that arrest on her record, but it did have two positive consequences: They had to leave town, move far away to get away from the reputation she had earned herself, and something she learned in orientation.

If the fire alarm is pulled, all the doors in the hospital automatically unlock.

They would simply pull the alarm, walk into the nursery, and grab the first baby they found. After that, Jaime would head back to the car with the baby under her coat. Meanwhile, Cory would make a scene in the hospital, then take off on foot. Hopefully, the police would follow his footprints, not the tracks of the car. Simple, easy, and quick.

Officer Donagin sat in the ambulance, his eyes trained on the prisoner, one hand on the handle of his gun. The prisoner just sat there, staring at him. It was unnerving. This giant of a man, just sitting, staring at him. Not saying anything, not groaning or moaning as the ambulance bounced through potholes or over bumps in the road. He had been shot more times then a human being should ever be shot, some in some very sensitive areas. The stitches, still fresh in Rupert's skull, were a reminder of that. But still, he ran, like a machine, like an animal... not out of pain, just out of pure determination.

And now this man, this monster, sat there, staring at him. His eyes glued to the officers.

The ambulance slowed again, almost stopping.

"Hey, what's the hold up!?!?!"

"It's a white out up here! I can't see shit!"

"Just keep going, nice and slow. Where are we?"

"On 86, just outside Rockwell." The driver turned around as he said this, so he didn't see the semi's headlights start to move towards him, as the his wheels lost their grip in the heavy snow. Officer Donagin did.

"Look out!" was all he could offer as a warning, as the semi's front end became a battering ram. Both vehicles were moving slowly, but the fact that neither could stop at all, or slow, and the sheer weight of the vehicles coming together, made the crash much more horrific.
And as the ambulance exploded around him, equipment and bags thrown about the compartment like so many rag dolls, as officer Donagin flew threw the air, his head smashing into the forward wall of the compartment, as the driver screamed as a bolt of metal pierced his flesh, pinning him to the seat, Rupert smiled.

John Corbin sat at the computer, quietly doing his charting. The snow was falling heavier with each passing moment, filling the small courtyard below him. It had started to pile up in the corners, nearly reaching the floors of the hospital above. Outside the hospital, a state of emergency had been declared, meaning that all the roads would be closing. He would be stuck here for a few days until they sorted things out.

It didn't bother him. He would have preferred to be home, of course, but being out of the house was good too. The hospital would go red, which would mean no in coming patients, so nothing would really change. A few patients might go bad during the few days, but it wasn't anything that he couldn't handle.

He focused on his charting, trying to ignore the noise that was slowly coming down the hallway towards him.

Wondermutt was asleep across the room, snoring slightly in the way that he does. He glanced outside again, seeing that the terrain was slowly beginning to change. He rubbed his eyes, shook his head, and again tried to ignore the changes around him.

Despite any amount of concentration he put towards his task, it wouldn't change the outcome. He knew that. The sound was coming closer.

He glanced at the door, which he had closed and locked behind him when he entered the room. It now stood open, beckoning him to come find out who or what had opened it, for they were surly hiding in the hallway. He knew what would happen if he did, he if stood up and walked cautiously to the door, peeking out into the empty hallway.

At this time of night, he was the only one on the third floor of the med-surg building. The managers and other staff that shared his floor had left long before the snow came, and the only other office that would be open would be housekeeping. They would be off in the hospital though, cleaning and emptying the trash. There was only one thing that could have opened the door, and he wanted no part of it.

Still, he stood, taking a deep breath. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe it was a housekeeper who opened the door, sneaking silently behind him to empty the trash behind him. Maybe.

But as he turned the corner, and the noise became almost deafening, he knew that no human had opened the door. He closed his eyes, not wanting to see what was on the floor, coming to get him. He knew there was no escape, no way to get away now, but still, he had to try.

He moved.

Reflexes born long ago in a god-forsaken jungle, tightend his muscles before he even knew he was going to move. His legs responded, pushing him across 10 foot wide hallway before his upper body had started to prepare. By the time he had crossed the hallway and landed in the open doorway of the sleep lab across from his office, he had tucked his shoulder in, turning his head away from the impact. He rolled, spinning on the ground, till his body was in the doorway. He flung out his leg, kicking the door shut, and then braced his back against the wall, holding it there.

A small shadow passed in front of the door, and as the thing from the hallway hit the door, it made a slightly tinny 'tink'.

He braced his body again, shifting his weight to hold the door shut better. The shadow moved, and so did John.

Leaping up, he threw the weight of his body against the door, and turned the deadbolt. He stepped back, watching the shadow pass in front of the door again. It tinked against the door, once...twice...three times... then the shadow moved away, slowly, but then with more speed. The noise it made became quieter and quieter, until only the slight hum of the boilers in the basement below him remained.

He smiled. He had finally found a way to beat it. He reached for the locked door, then stopped short.

What if it was waiting for him?

He pulled his hand back, staring at the door, listening intently. Neither the noise, nor the shadow, returned. He waited a long five minutes, the seconds sounding like a hammer against a metal door as they ticked away on his watch.

He realized he was holding his breath. He exhaled, a slow, drawn out motion. The shadow and sound had not returned. Still, it was not worth the risk. Nothing was worth that. He turned, reaching for the TV that hung on the wall, usually used to entertain patients while they fell asleep.

It sat silently, 3 feet away from him. He looked down at it, and said managed only two words before his voice became a girlish scream as he tried to avoid it touching him.

"Oh shit."

The green marble rolled slowly forward, following him, and again he moved. He didn't make it.

The marble brushed his foot, and he hit the floor.

So that chick ended up being sent to a more "intensive" facility, or so I hear.

If you are not going to read it, don't rate it.

And if you are going to rate it, rate it honestly. I don't need your pity, or your approval.

So....
I'm a douche, calling everyone retards, etc. etc. etc. and I get ratings (although negative) and hits, even though I'm off the front page.

I'm normal, fine, just writing my usual stuff, and I get nothing?

Wow. Back to douchebaggery for me! it's a helluva lot more fun!
