maybe i've forgotten
the name and the address
of everyone i've ever known
it's nothing i regret
save it for another day
it's the school exam and the kids have run away

He smiled to himself, stepping lightly off his doorstep into the chill afternoon air. He broke into a run the moment his ragged sneakers hit the pavement and rushed down the sidewalk, dodging the other pedestrians struggling to make it back to their offices before their lunch breaks ended. He nimbly sidestepped a bicycle courier without slowing and skidded around the corner. There was the 39th St. station. He bounded down the stairs two at a time, managing to dig out his Metro card just in time to slide it though the reader and hustle past the turnstile. He had to turn sideways to squeeze through the closing doors and was fortunate to grab a pole to stop himself from crashing into a hip-looking Asian couple. The subway train lurched forward and he breathed to slow his heart. He was on his way.

i would like a place i could call my own
have a conversation on the telephone
wake up every day, that would be a start
i would not complain about my wounded heart
i was upset, you see, almost all the time
you used to be a stranger, now you are mine

She flipped her mobile open to check the time and groaned, leaping out of bed and scrambling for her dresser. She pulled on a fresh bra and undies and decided that there was no time for clean jeans. She found last night's outfit and donned it over her slim tattooed frame, then ran her hands a few times through her mussed hair and messily brushed her teeth. No way she could squeeze in breakfast; she was out the door after finishing off the last Guinness from the fridge, not bothering to lock the door.
Her shirt was inside-out. She didn't care.

i wouldn't even trust you
i've not got much to give
we're dealing in the limits
and we don't know who with
you may think that i'm out of hand
that i'm naive, i'll understand
on this occasion, it's not true
look at me, i''m not you

He was off the subway almost before it came to a full halt, slipping in and out of the throngs and stopping at the top of the stairs outside to check his phone. Five minutes to get there. He looked around. Left on Burkhardt, down two blocks then right on Liberty. Wait, that didn't sound right. Shit, he'd forgotten the note. Probably left it on the kitchen table when he came back last night. He'd had trouble reading her chicken scratch without his glasses. He'd left his contacts at home because the smoke bothered his eyes last time. Right or left on Liberty? Four minutes now. Hell with it; he'd find it in time. Winging it seemed more fun, anyway. He took off at a full sprint, his footfalls coming as fast as his pulse.

i would not complain about my wounded heart
i was a short fuse, burning all the time
you were a complete stranger, now you are mine

She wove in and of traffic. The scooter had been beat to shit when she'd found it, but she and Chuck had been able to fix it up easy enough, and the price was right. Hellfire, where had she told him to be, the bookstore or that bohemian place that sold that Cuban coffee? She couldn't remember. She rounded the corner and there he was, standing like he'd been waiting for hours, leaning up against the brick of the record shop. That's right, they'd talked about New Wave the night before and she'd mentioned the place. Damn, how drunk had she gotten? She'd forgotten how much she liked the "cute beanpole" look. She parked near the curb and swung her long legs over the seat and removed her helmet, shaking the kinks out of her hair. She hopped up onto the sidewalk and approached him.

wake up every day, that would be a start
i would not complain about my wounded heart
just wait 'til tomorrow
i guess that's what they all say
just before they fall apart

He stepped forward. "Jessie, right?" He offered his hand. She shook it. "I'm Ian. I remember you from last night." He didn't know how else to introduce himself.
"Yeah." His charmingly awkward way made her blush a little. She motioned to the door with her head. "Wanna hunt for some records?"
"Sure."
She took his hand again and they stepped inside.
