The buildings tumbled in on themselves
Mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair
The skyline was beautiful on fire
All twisted metal stretching upwards
Everything washed in a thin orange haze
I said, "Kiss me, you're beautiful..
These are truly the last days"
You grabbed my hand and we fell into it
Like a daydream or a fever
We stumbled, tripping through a strange fog, holding each other as if our very lives depended on it. Strands of fog plucked at our clothes, gently tugging as we made our way from the burning city behind us. We passed others, some alone, others together, a few grouped in threes of fours; huddled against the elements, like waifs looking for their mothers.
Pressing on, we reached the foot of a hill. Looking up all we could see was twisted trees and rocks. A truly barren landscape, but the only way now was up, the flames were escaping the city and engulfing those who had not been as quick as us.
Taking your hand I whispered in your ear, words of encouragement and love, words to take away the loneliness of the situation. You leaned into my neck, breathing gently, your soft breath the only thing truly alive in that moment.
We began our ascent, slowly at first, but growing in confidence and vigor as we realised the necessity of the situation. Our hands became sweaty, our breath ragged and our clothes dampened by the exertion of the climb. We must have walked for two or three hours, constantly uphill with no break to ease our suffering.
The hill began to level off, the trees became less twisted and black, the rocks fewer and the sky lighter. We emerged from the black fog onto a clear vista. Turning around we looked back at where we had been. Quietly gasping at our achievement we embraced and sat down, bitterly admiring the city that had once held all our hopes and dreams, reduced to a pile of ash and cinder.
I said, "Kiss me, you're beautiful..
These are truly the last days"
You turned to me, lips moist and parted. We kissed as the fog embraced us once more. There was no more time, there was only blackness and flame as we fell, silently through the darkness of death.
