We all know Texas is a backwards place but it's only getting worse. I am a transplant here and do not intend to stay but now I am ready to run screaming out and set the state on fire behind me. A Creationist has been appointed to the chair of the state board of education, Don McLeroy . While I think that again, Rick Perry has screwed up and is leading the state towards the brim fires below, McLeroy has a record of rejecting science textbooks teaching the full theory of evolution as too 'dogmatic' and in contradictory of Creationism. Now please, forgive my ignorance as I haven't had a biology class in 7 or 8 years, but isn't evolution widely accepted as fact, supported by scientific evidence? Maybe not in the Bible belt but certainly in most of the country and the world you will be laughed at if you say that fossils have been planted by liberals to convince people of the Devil's ways. (I know someone who actually believes that.)
Upon expressing my displeasure at the thought of my children being taught Creationism over evolution, a friend wrote "They've taken God out of the schools so why not evolution." Now let us overlook the pre-established idea that evolution is FACT and Creationism is at best an idea and look JUST at the fact that Creationism presupposes a god. What is her argument again? The only way I could even begin to understand something like that being said it to presuppose she's a creationist. Way to speak up for your side there with an argument that has no logic. She is perhaps the MOST ignorant person I know so I shouldn't be surprised... but lately, the level of people's ignorance seems absolutely unprecedented.
What bothers me the most is the hypocrisy involved. This country is full of hypocrites but Creationists seem among the worst. The prevailing theory to support Creationism? They THEY can't turn a rock into a person. For such religious fundamentalists, they seemed to have missed the idea that humans are NOT God. Sure, YOU can't. Are you God? Do you have the ability to cause floods, plagues and droughts? Oh, you don't, you say? So surely, weather can't exist then since you can't 'do' it yourself.
For the record, I am a Christian AND I believe in evolution and I do not want my children learning a belief held by fundamentalists in science class. Religion has no place in the biology texts in my opinion and I will not allow my children to learn what I think amounts to ignorant nonsense. Private school (or better yet, emigrating abroad), here we come!

No, Evolution is not considered a fact for several reasons. One there are different theories about the process, and Two it hasn't been tested or proven. That said there is a great amount of scientific evidence to support this idea.

I got past the first line then my eyes went out of focus and all I could see was a grey blur.
Way to go!
I know you already appologized... hence -1 instead of -2 but having consumed many pints of red beer last nnight and not really getting much sleep my vision is already a little on the blurry side so this gigantic block of letters just looked like a vomitous explosion.

When did Ubersite turn into the belief system debate clearing house?
it's all there is recently. That and political posts.
I miss the rabbits and emu.
People are clueless, they dont know what the meaning of life is, waste their lives trying to understand things they wern't designed to understand, they get brainwashed by beliefs, and kill each other. Completly missing the whole point of existance instead of just living it.
wheew!
I feel better now, thanks.
also BIG BLOCK O' TEXT, and all that.

First off, Holy Huge Block o' Text!
Now that that's over...
Okay, don't get me wrong here. Creationism makes about as much sense as roller-skates on a snake. Still, if you've ever read up on the supposed 'facts' behind evolution, you might be a bit suprised. In the end, there isn't really all that much concrete evidence to support it. For one thing, there are ginormous holes in the fossil records linking earlier species to those that, provisionally, decended from them. Man is a classic example. What miniscule examples we have of early hominids is barely enough to provide even rough conjecture about how we, as the latest example of Homo Sapiens Sapiens, came to be.
Again, I'm not trying to say that religious fanatics are entitled to pass off their dumb-ass opinion as fact. I'm merely pointing out that your own stance on the subject is also little more than a belief/opinion, albeit a little more logical.

I struggle to believe that some people can have such a strong faith in something that has been so widely rejected. Its almost impressive that they still believe in Creationsim. Nice piece

Wait...you're SURPRISED that Creationists still have political influence, and are shocked at their dogma?
You say you are a transplant. From where, fucking MARS?
Creationists have been spouting their bullshit almost as long as Darwin wrote down the last period in Origin of the Species. Are you just learning this now? Are you twelve goddamn years old?
Oh, and learn to edit your posts, shit for brains.
