Interesting timing for this post.

The below account is 100% true.

__________________________________________________

Most of you who know anything about me know that I'm hopelessly addicted to the activity of weightlifting. I began lifting weights when I was about 15; I was a scrawny, unsightly twig of a boy who could have easily been mistaken for Opie Taylor and I was bent on changing my physique.

Anyway, it's 13 years later and I'm still lifting weights. I will probably continue doing so until it becomes physically impossible for me.

Just recently something happened to me in the gym that will go down as my most painful experience to date, bar none.

It was about 6:30 PM on Friday, July 27th. Yes, I mean just this past Friday.

(Just to give you some context here, I have been through some pretty serious shit: A ruptured appendix, two compound fractures, being beaten with shower pipes, baseball bats and tire irons, witnessing the death of my mother, etc. I consider myself as someone with a relatively heightened tolerance for pain.)

Friday was 'back' day. I was on my third set of bent over rows. FYI - the bent over row exercise requires about a 45 degree bend of the back to perform. It's an exercise that targets the rhomboids and infraspinatus muscles along the spine.

My weight stack was 3 and a half plates, or, 160 lbs. I normally work my way up to about 225 or 230 on this particular exercise.

About halfway through my 8th repetition, at the contraction of the rep, something shifted. Some...thing. It happened near my coccyx, or tailbone.

The 'shift' caused a flood of pain to rush from my back through my abdomen, down my legs and all the way to the tips of my toes. It was so intense I immediately dropped the weight and fell to the floor.

Now, picture this:

The gym is pretty full of people. Most of them are diligently working on their own exercises with perhaps an eye on an attractive someone of the opposite sex just for entertainment.

I can assure you though, that when this accident happened, just about everyone's attention was on me. The howl I let out was a cross between that of a banshee and an infant. I was curled into a contorted position with one hand on my lower back and another on the ground, struggling for some kind of stabilization.

There are no words to describe the agony I was in. I couldn't stand, I couldn't crawl and I was a helpless heap of sweat, tears and embarrassment.

Within seconds, two members of the L.A. Fitness staff were at my sides, asking questions and trying to position me so I could lie on my back.

"Can we call you an ambulance?" one of them said.

All I could do was cry in response. I had never, ever felt this kind of misery in my entire life.

After a solid 5 minutes of coping with the torturous waves of incapacitating pain I managed to make my way to an awkward standing position and, with the assistance of two strangers, hobbled out to the parking lot.

"Are you sure we can't call a doctor or something?"

"I don't need a doctor you asshole I need a fucking SHOTGUN so I can KILL myself. You happen to have one on you?"

I didn't really say that but I certainly thought it.

So...I made my way home and to my couch. After trying fruitlessly to find a position that brought relief of the pain, I resigned to calling an ambulance. I was desperate. I couldn't drive myself to the hospital and even getting up or crawling to the bathtub for a soak was out of the question.

At about midnight the ambulance showed up and I was brought to North Fulton Regional Hospital where I became a human pincushion. I was given two administrations of morphine and a few tubes of blood were taken for analysis. At one point one of the EMT's asked me, "On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you describe the pain?"

"8. If you asked me to get up, it'd be a fucking 11" I replied.

For the first 24 hours all I had to do was push this little button next to my hospital bed and 10 cc's of pure morphine would be dumped into the saline solution that was being slowly fed to me intravenously. After my first visit with the doctor however, the ante was upped to a pill cocktail consisting of Lortabs and high-strength muscle relaxers. Then came the anti-inflammatory medication.

By the middle of day two (this afternoon) I was so doped up I couldn't think straight. I still kind of am.

I was released from the hospital about 3 hours ago and have been soaking in an epsom salt bath since. I just now dumped a few more pills down the hatch for some continued relief.

So what exactly happened?

Well, the MRI revealed a few things. Firstly, I tore 3 ligaments connecting my L4 and L5 lumbar vertebrae. Secondly, two discs in my lower back had bulged to the point of pinching the sciatic nerve running down my left leg. Right now I'm typing in an interesting, half-reclined position that is actually kinda comfy.

So, yea. This weekend has been totally shot and it's all because of bad form on the back machine in the gym.

Kids, listen to your P.E. teachers and take it from me: back injuries will fucking crumple you.

It's okay to stop the protein shakes as long as you make sure you still get enough protein from other sources.

When you eat toast in the morning, it's wheat bread right? White bread is pretty much useless. Also, you should try to eat yams instead of potatoes, yams are a much better source of carbs. Wheat pasta, brown rice and just about anything wheat based should be a big part of your meals. Since carbs are what keep you going, naturally you're going to want a lot of them if you only get two meals.

I would say I average two meals a day. Breakfast, being toast and one meal getting veg, potatos and meat into my system. So protein shakes seem a sensible option for me especially as I already go swimming 4 times a week.

If I reach my ideal size is it ok to stop the protein shakes and just continue with the swimming?

-------------------

That diet looks a little lite for someone swimming a lot, that should be taking a lot of carbs.

the only way to know if it is ok is to monitor your weight.

Well I dont wanna get any slimmer just because of varying things throughout my life,,dont want to go into details but I will never eat three meals a day and if protein shakes could give me the necessary protien or whatever I would like to try that.

____________________

I like to mix chocolate flavored almond milk, frozen bananas, and a lot of peanut butter in a blender every time I work out (I always use unsweetened organic peanut butter, so I'm not sure how Jiffy will taste). It's incredibly delicious, and has a lot of protein. But if you don't eat enough meals in a day, what you're going to need more than protein is carbs. They do make carb powder you can mix with the shake, if you don't have the time to eat enough from real food.

and i have doubt indoninja trains only naturally. no offence. you wouldn't be the 1st one :-D

-----------

If I didn't train naturally I would be a tank. I wouldn't be worried about creatine effect on my liver. Anyone can get bigger, and it isn't that hard if you don't fall into the trap of the same routine. If I am not sore from a wokout the next day I change it. I know people who have done the same workout for over a year with almost no results who say they just can't get big.

Besdies other than summer jobs every job I have had requires drug tests, my current job requires tests and a background check which roids would get me bounced for using. Plus considering it took me almost an hour and a half to run 9 miles last night, I really don't need any more weight.

I despise Creatin. It made me sick. Really sick. Oh and as an FYI for you guys who got puffy faces off it. Thats because you didn't have enough Vitamin A to offset. You get puffy skin in general, not just around the face right? All you would have to do to negate that, is take Beta Carotene.

Juicing is cheating. /no respect for juicers. Oh and speaking of juice, fruit juices are really good for you too. Apple orange and cranberry I try to drink often. Not that "from concentrate" bullshit. I drink "not from concentrate" juices. Oh and one last thing for all you new weight lifters / exercisers. Bannanas are a godsend. They will help your body stop aching after a hard work out session alot faster. That pain, is your muscles torn and damaged from over use. Thats a good pain. It means your body doesn't want to experience that pain again so it will build extra muscles in those areas to take on future additional workloads. Potassium, a good source of which is bannanas, helps to ease the aches experienced during these times. Try to eat a bannana or 2 a day when you work out. Also remember to give your body a day or 2 of resting times. Dont go out 1 day and work out every single muscle in your body, then do it again tomorrow. Focus on groups of muscles. Make a week chart out of it. pects and biceps day 1, abs and triceps day 2, legs and lower back day 3. Etc. Etc. Something like that. I recommend you have a monday wednesday friday work out routine. It gives your entire body a day inbetween to rest before you exert yourself again.

I am proud of myself, I managed to make myself puke while running today. Everytime I got to a red light, I dropped down and thundered out as many pushups as I could before the light changed. Once it changed I recovered and sprinted to the end of the next block before slowing down to medium jogging until I hit the next red light. After 30 minutes I almost fell down while I was puke running. I had to stop and finish throwing up before I could run again. It was awesome.

yeah, it's true that it's naturally found in red meat. i keep hearing it's harmful for your liver, but i just don't know.

i do drink a ton of water and eat fairly healthy (not always, since i'm a traveller), so i'm not so sure it would be too bad for my liver if i do it in moderation, which is what i'm doing.

===
if u don't drink water and always drink alcohol, yes..it,s not good. but to say it's harmful when you lead a healthy lifestyle is an urban legend. it's a natural product found in meat anyway.

they tested this product so fucking much that all the nay-sayers have been discredited. just because some douchebags got hurt cuz they ate ten scoops of creatine a day for a whole year and drank only soda all day long doesn't mean it's bad.

like anything, it has to be taken with moderation.

try creatine. it's not juice and it's pretty effective with some people. it was for me.
http://www.ubersite.com/m/86624 i doN,t look that big but i was almost 200 pounds on this. of course, lots of it was water weight, as you can see on my swollen face and hands...but after i stopped, i was at 187 if i recall and i could lift a lot heavier than i did before.

it,s good to bust a plateau. i won't do it again until i get my shoulder fixed up.

i got up to 180 when i stared working out after i quit drinking. that's about where i'd like to be again because i'm 5'11", but it's going to be a long road. i don't have the time i used to have to work out, but i'm ordering about 10 grand worth of workout equipment for my house. when i'm not on business travel, i'll be working out hardcore. expect frequent camwhores as i get hotter and hotter.

i love my job, but i just don't have the time to workout and my health is suffering because of it. i'm transferring down to Florida when i get back from Afghanistan, so i'm buying a Jeep Wrangler and a jetski since i'll be living by the beach. i HAVE to get in better shape if i want to go to the beach.

personally, i seem to be stucked at 180 lbs forever.

it seems that no matter how hard i try to cut down weight, i will never be as cut as i wished i was and i'll never gain mass as much i'd like to.

i work out hard but i get little improvement. when i stop working out entirely for a few weeks, i change very little.

it seems this is my final plateau, unless i juice up.

---------------------

I am around 187 now. I want to get to around 170-175 for a marathon I am doing, it hurts my knees running high milage when I am "fat"

If I start doing heavy squats and deadlifts I start to pack on the weight. I used to never have a problem shedding weight but now that I have a personal chef (and maid, or a "wife" I think they are called) there is always too much food.

painful...

When you first start talking about weight lifting I though you might reference an explosively herniated groin, where the intestines actually blow out one side of your nut sack.

90% of the time, accidents in gyms happen to people who juice up cuz they don't realize their limits.

i bet all that mass is useful when you're in a wheelchair with shrink testicles, eh?

"On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you describe the pain?"

========================

Interesting side note. My wife works doing clinical trials and she says that this is almost a bullshit question because most people always pick the upper end of the spectrum regardless of injury. Apparently the only things that should actually be a 10 are 3rd degree burns, disembowelment, and reading a Kaelic post.

Also after 6 weeks, you're probably going to have extended fun trying to get over the copius amounts of painkillers you're currently taking. Have fun.

The point of using Slim Fast alongside meals is that it gives you what you normally get from a light meal, in other words if you use Slim Fast with meals it is the equivalent of a meal + a light meal, thus you bulk up not slim down. Trust me.

Well I dont wanna get any slimmer just because of varying things throughout my life,,dont want to go into details but I will never eat three meals a day and if protein shakes could give me the necessary protien or whatever I would like to try that.

EmissionImpossible, 3 meals a day is very important in bulking up. Once you are used to eating 3 times a day you can also start snacking inbetween meals. Protein shakes are fine, you could also use Slim Fast, a shake with every meal or at least one a day will help.

Protein is the raw material your body uses to build muscle. What you're going to want is that + carbohydrates. Carbs are the fuel you use. Good sources for these (If you don't wish to take supplements) are peanut butter, tuna fish, whole wheat bread, and pastas

==============

Yeah I do eat those things just not enough and thought supplements would be an easier way of making sure I got enough, thanks for your advice. Just also wonder what supplements are best....................

I used to date a guy who lifted so much and in such a mismatched way that he slowly couldnt touch his wrist to his neck. Your trap muscle is one of the easiest muscles to build up as a man and he took great pride in shrugging a small VW bus.

When you start feeling a bit better focus on your abs and lats, strong abdominals will help support a weakened back.

Ummmm all I wanted to know was what protein drinks actually do, im not great at eating 3 square meals a day and basically wanna build up my arms and legs from the twigs they are, I regularly go swimming, hmmm about 4 times a week but I guess thats just working with what I have........

So I really wanted to know whats best!

Protein is the raw material your body uses to build muscle. What you're going to want is that + carbohydrates. Carbs are the fuel you use. Good sources for these (If you don't wish to take supplements) are peanut butter, tuna fish, whole wheat bread, and pastas.

Also I recomend you take on a form of "Cutting" if you're looking to build bulk but not look fat. Basically it equates to supplementing food intake for massive water consumption. Try to work your way up to over a gallon a day.

One thing you'll notice is your bowel movements and sleep patterns change drastically. You finish going "num 2" in about 2 and a half minutes. Your body goes to needing only about 4-6 hours of sleep each night. You will stay energized through out the day. You dont have those "crashes" or any of that crap anymore. You HAVE to cut the caffeine out of your diet in my opinion though. Its horrible for you.

One thing you absolutely have to take into account though. When you alter your diet, PORTION CONTROL. Do NOT eat until you're full. Eat a sandwhich or 2 at the most. Every 8 hours or so. Drink as much water as you can in between. The entire trick to losing weight and cutting, in my opinion is portion control for your diet.

I go to the gym regularly, but I've never been interested in becoming a human hunk o' meat for this exact reason. Yeah, I've sort of gotten used to being surrounded by giant bastids that look like they could push me into the ground with their thumb, but then again, I comfort myself with the knowledge that:

a) I already have a somewhat weak back (most people taller than six feet do); heavy work-outs tend to put more strain on it than is both normal or healthy.

b) My focus on endurance and speed means that while I can't lift as much as Arnold next to me, I'll never have difficulty crossing my arms. I'm also a fan of the popular adage "He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day". You may be able to pinch my head off like a pimple, but I highly doubt that you could catch me. Nature gifted me with long legs for a reason.

That being said, I feel for you. Back injuries have a way of lingering for the rest of your days. Hope you feel better soon.

I'll tell you this: sleep in a fetal position, when sitting put your elbows on your knees for releif, and don't get addicted to the painkillers.

The pain will not go away, you will grow used to it.

a) am fat
b) don't lift weights for fun
c) do not have a herniated lumbar disc
d) did not crumple myself through overly-applied narcicism

Answer: f, as in "you completely 'f'ucked yourself, dincha?".

I've recently started working out immensely, as I am preparing to at least attempt a triathlon next year. I haven't been doing any heavy duty lifting or anything, mostly stuff that'll improve my endurance (jogging, swimming, biking). The only thing I've been doing is strapping myself with weights and doing some of my old martial arts related business with them. There have been a few occasions where I've thought "I'm glad I didn't extend myself much further than that."

This reminds me to be more careful. I don't want to end up like you.

With the back pain that is, I'm sure you're a lovely person.

______________

I don't drink protein shakes or take it as a supplement - it's best, IMO, to get your protein from foods like nuts and meats. Two small handfuls of almonds provide about 12 grams of protein which is sufficient for sustained muscle growth (though some meatheads will swear by 30g+ protein intake after a workout).

But what's your question?
