"Maybe it's just a phase," I say, pretending to listen and drinking a spiked lemonade in Ralph's backyard, while watching our children play - watching them run around, jump into the pool, get back out, run around some more and jump back in - truly dizzying in the june heat.
"Matilda told me yesterday Jake said some nasty things," Ralph says, countering my statement, "It worries me."
"Listen, Ralph, Jake's only ten, he's hitting puberty... you can't blame him for reciting something he heard on television." I retort, and take another drink of my lemonade, unsure as to what he's going to say next.
"I know, I know, but it just worried me a little." He takes a breath...
"What did he say?" I bring the lemonade up to my lips and take a sip, swishing the liquid around like mouthwash. It's almost as strong.
"Well," he begins, lowering his voice and looking around making sure the children aren't near. He leans in close, "He said he was going to stab them in their vaginas with this wooden sword he had made."
I swallow half the mouthwash and cough, turning my head to look at Ralph who shows a worried expression; a crumpled, almost pathetic face.
"He said what?" I mutter, trying to clear my throat with one large cough.
"He said," he lowers his voice even lower, barely a whisper, "He said he was going to stab both Matilda and Jamie in their vagina's with a wooden sword."
"You can't be serious." I respond, looking over at Jake who dives into the pool, touching the bottom and then resurfacing, splashing water everywhere. He was always a great swimmer.
"Well, I am serious Nate, very serious." His eyebrows raised, long and curly.
I fill up my lemonade and pour in twice as much vodka. The sun beats down even harder on my face, and Samantha taps on the glass door behind us. We both look back and Ralph waves. Samantha smiles and walks back into the kitchen where I can smell fish being cooked.
"Are you sure he said that?" I ask.
He takes a drink from his beer and sits back, "Yeah, I'm sure, they wouldn't lie about that."
"I'll talk to him about it." I say, looking over at Jake as he dives into the pool, again touching the bottom and resurfacing. I feel a strange impulse to laugh, almost maniacal, visceral and uncertain. I look back at Ralph who continues watching the children, pulling his sunglasses down from on top his head and over his eyes.
I take a drink of my spiked lemonade as Samantha and Nicole walk out with freshly prepared salmon, asparagus and potatoes. I'm sleeping with Nicole, and I have a strange feeling Samantha is sleeping with Ralph, and though it would bother me, it wouldn't really matter. I've also been sleeping with a woman at work. Sometimes three or four times a week.
We eat the fish which doesn't taste that good, and I am drunk, staring at Nicole's ass as she bends over the firepit, thinking about stabbing her vagina, her nice, tight pussy with my cock. Aside from the c-section scar on her lower abdomen (also a couple stretch marks from her pregnancy but it doesn't bother me that much), she has a near perfect body
The kids begin to quiet near the end of the day and I am drunk, probably too drunk, but I don't care. They run inside with their towels around their waists, and play on their Nintendo Wii that they nagged me about for months before I finally bought it.
Nicole turns around, putting the top onto the fireplace and sits down next to Ralph. My mouth waters, and Samantha puts her hand on my arm.
We sit in an awkward silence for a while, listening to the crackling of the fire, watching the embers grow orange and hot. I slap a mosquito on my leg.
"Maybe we should get them ready for bed fairly soon?" Samantha asks, no, she says.
"Yeah, of course." I say, struggling to get up out of my lawn chair, and wobble to the glass sliding doors, having a difficult time opening it.
I put the brats to sleep and come back outside, and they're having a conversation now, without me, and it makes me paranoid.
"What are you guys talking about?"
"Oh, nothing." They respond, the conversation seemingly finished. They had to have been talking about me. But what were they saying? Was it because I drank too much? A surprise birthday? No, my birthday isn't for a few more months. They're plotting something, they have to be, they're evil, they're vampires. I hate them. I hate them all.
"Anyone want a drink?" Samantha seems to switch positions, leaning away from me as I sit down next to her, as if she's disgusted. They all look away.
"No, no, I still got this beer," Ralph says, picking up a stick and stoking the fire that still burns rather brilliantly in the summer night. Nicole glances up at me, and then down to the fire, her eyes red, almost demonic with the reflection. I cross my legs.
"It's a beautiful night." Samantha mumbles almost inaudible.
Nicole opens her mouth, "Yeah, it is... it's really cooled down a lot." Ralph nods. Samantha crosses her arms, looks out into the sky - no stars.
Nicole stands up, "I'm going to get a drink, anyone want anything?"
"Yeah, I'll have a bourbon." Samantha replies.
"I just asked you if you wanted a drink," I look at her, my eyes vicious.
"Well, I didn't want one then." She says, uncrossing her arms to cross them again.
"What's your problem?"
"Nothing. Okay? Nothing."
"Calm down." Ralph interrupts. Nicole stands by the door, watching, listening.
"Stay out of this Ralph. You..."
"Don't talk to him like that." Samantha cuts me off.
"Let's just all calm down, okay?" Ralph continues.
"Yeah, I'll get you guys both another drink," Nicole butts in. I look at Ralph and then back to her.
"I offered you a drink two minutes and you don't want one... What do I have, leprosy?" I spit.
"Come on guys, it's a beautiful night... let's just try to enjoy it."
"What the fuck is going on? What did I do?" Nicole darts her eyes away as I look up to her. Ralph turns his head, continuing to stoke the fire. Samantha taps her fingers on her arm. "What?"
"Nate, what would you like to drink?" Nicole asks.
"What were you guys talking about? Huh? Before I came out here you all three were talking. What's going on? Huh? What did I do?"
"Just drop it Nate." Samantha's voice raised.
I look back to her, she's poisonous, her tongue forked and her skin reptilian. "NO, I want to know what the fuck is going on here..."
I watch them, waiting. There is silence. Nicole and Samantha look to each other. I feel nauseous. The flame grows even higher. It cracks and pops, like flesh burning. I can almost smell it.
Nicole opens the glass doors, "I'll get you that bourbon."
Ralph takes a long pull from his beer, and before she can close the door, he says, "I'll take another Coors." Nicole nods and walks inside. I stare at Ralph. He puts the poker down and sits back. I watch as Nicole walks to the liquor cabinet and opens a bottle of bourbon. She takes out two rocks glasses and puts ice in them, pours the bourbon in, picks them up, and looks out the door to me. We lock eyes, she looks up to the bedroom, motioning.
I look to Samantha and back to her. She's gone. The rocks glass sit on the counter.
"I'll be right back." I say, standing up.
"Where are you going?" Samantha asks.
"I have to piss." I mutter as I walk through the glass-doors, closing it behind me.
I make my way up the steps, and I can hear the television muffled through the kid's bedroom. They're probably asleep.
I walk into the darkened master-bedroom, a faint light peeking out from under the bathroom door. I hear running water. I step close, put my ear up to it, listening for any sound. The door, which wasn't closed the entire way, nudges open as I press my ear against the wood. For a moment I am frightened, but slowly push the door open further. I don't know what I expect, except to see Nicole standing in front of the mirror.
As the door completely opens, I get a full view of the bathroom. It is empty. Nicole isn't there.
"Nathan." I hear behind me.
I jerk around in terror. Nicole stands in a mask of shadow, her silhouette barely visible as she closes the bedroom door.
"What are you doing?" I ask as she begins to walk closer to me. "Turn the light on, I can't see you."
"Shhh," she says.
"You'll wake up the children," I hear from the other side of the room. It isn't Nicole's voice. It's Samantha's voice, near the closet.
The water shuts off in the bathroom and I jerk around again. I don't see anyone. "What are you two doing?"
"Nathan, keep your voice down, you'll wake up the children," I hear again while turning back around. I can't be sure who it is... maybe both.
"I don't understand." I say.
Suddenly I feel a hand on my shoulder, strong and large. It squeezes. My eyes widen, and my body shutters.
I feel a cold pain in my back, and when it leaves, wetness.
I see Nicole and Samantha as they walk into the light of the bathroom.
I go numb and fall to my knees, unable to hold myself.
They continue to walk closer. Their eyes are black and their skin porcelain. I want to scream, cry out, but I can't, I can only open my mouth. Feel my throat fall to my stomach. Feel the liquid running down my back.
A kick and I am on my stomach, my head turned, and I can see them through my peripheral.
I hear my heart beat in my ears. I see them talking, talking to me but I can't hear them. My eyes become heavy. I close them.
I feel another pain, more pain, more blood... everywhere.

"Their eyes are black and their skin porcelain."
is this meant to imply that they are vampiric?

1.5 rounded up.
I, unlike TheUniter, don't tend to skimp on ratings.
A couple of small technical errors, nothing major.
A couple of small whatthefucks, nothing major.
But I'd've liked more detail and background.
