Driving around somewhere in Rioja, Spain a few months back we passed what looked like a battered old road sign, nearly completely hidden by weeds. Curiosity getting the better of us - and having nowhere to be in a hurry - we parked up at the roadside to take a look.

The sign, as it turned out was nearly illegible but we could make out the word, Turruncún, so walking back to the car we looked up and behind us, where I thought spotted a building.... Or was there more? We climbed for a while and came across the most beautiful place I have ever seen in Spain. Possibly the world.

It was a ruined, deserted village.

Clambering up, we spent most of the day there in the hot Spanish sun, exploring. We didn't see anyone all day, although you could hear cars in the distance. And you know? I can't get the place out of my mind.

When we looked at the map in the car we noticed that Turruncún was not on the map! Defiantly I marked it on the map myself. When we eventually left, we saw a sign leading the other way, clearly saying the name of the place - and so sadly realised that it wasn't quite the secret we had initially thought.

But I'll never forget it. I have secret little dreams of going and buying the whole site and rebuilding all the houses, the little church....

Wouldn't that be amazing? Here's a photo of it..

Cool. During my time in Scotland (yeah that's right...suck it, bitches), my favorite touristy thing to do was visit the ruined castles and what not. That, and watch re-runs of Starsky and Hutch on one of the four television stations we got.

This country is going down the shitter - because of uneducated, uncultured, inexperienced douches such as yourself.

Get the fuck out of ConservativeTown, USA and go try living life on your own for once.

Did you ever find out about the history of the place?

Beautiful place! It would make a fantastic site for a photoshoot.

Yep, there are a few decent websites - with an "even better picture" than crappy Merlina's.

hahahahaha.

It was beautiful in the middle of the village, things dreams are made of.

Marge, please, old people don't need companionship. They need to be
isolated and studied, so it can be determined what nutrients they have
that might be extracted for our personal use.

Um... I'm doubting they HAD power in the days that village was inhabited.

Probably for the other villages, no?

======

Considering it looks like it's going down the valley in the background, I'd say you're right. Looks great!

looks like a cheesey final showdown location for a late 80s chuck norris movie.

I can almost picture a helicopter rising up in the backround and a few guys in that tower and on the roofs of random buildings firing off their AK-47s at the chopper. The chopper dodges off into a shadow quiet ridge so Chuck Norris can repel down from it by a strand of dental floss. He is armed with a package of Dentyne Ice, a toothpick, and a shoelace.

Fast forward 14 minutes and 12 seconds. Every bad guy is dead and the whole place explodes in a fiery inferno as Chuck Norris once again saves the day and steals back the Congressman's top secret files. He parasails off the cliff into the sunset using a tattered shirt as his chute.

Roll Credits.
