I am pretty sure I read this somewhere. An army lieutenant when asked what he would have done with the Iraq situation gave a pretty good answer... better than what the govt. has come up with so far anyways.
First, a little background information for the people who don't know: Iraq is basically run by low to medium level religious and political leaders called sheiks. Yes they have the new govt. blah blah... guess who gets voted into the offices- the Sheiks, they have the money and the support. Now many of these Sheiks run a small to medium sized neighborhood, and their neighborhoods need protection from the insurgents, the Sunnis / Shiites, and the Americans. So what they do is they recruit and train a force of local males to become a militia in order to protect their homes and families.
Another tidbit of information: the sheiks are humans too and thus they are prone to greed. If you were in Iraq, a country who's infrastructure is constantly being damaged and destroyed what business would you get into to make the most money? Construction, Plain and simple. So these Sheiks all have their hands in the construction business and compete with each other for dominance in the market in their area.
Last bit of background: Iraqi citizens would rather join the Police force as opposed to the army, the army can be sent to other parts of the country far away from their families. In Iraq that would be dangerous for the family.
OK, background information done. Here is what the LT's plan was:
When the initial invasion of Iraq was complete, and the US took control of Baghdad, the Sheiks should have been contacted immediately. They should have been given the opportunity to send their militias to Iraqi Police (IP) training. They could even send half their troops to training while the other half stay back to protect the neighborhood, then when the half that is training finishes; they can switch. In return for sending his troops the Sheik is to be offered the sole rights to rebuild in a certain area of the city. He also gains more highly trained troops in his personal army. This sounds great to the sheik. His greed has been stroked, and his men are protecting their families.
with that plan in effect the insurgents (which are primarily not Iraqi citizens) would have been taken care of by the locals and we could have been out of there by now because it would have developed an Us vs. them mentality.
Funny, how a low ranking officer knows better than the Generals and the commander in chief himself.
Oh, and for those feeling hopeful that now we have a plan and we can get out: this WOULD have worked had we implemented it right away. Its too late, and were fucked now.

Learn to spell, punctuate, write like someone who's over 11, etc., before you start telling other people that they're making themselves look like idiots.

Swell. Another political post.
It's fascinating the compulsion some have to offer up their political commentary. It's almost mathmatical.

First off, I said in the begginning that it wasnt MY knowledge I gave credit to the Army LT who came up with the plan.
Second off, I also say at the end the plan wouldnt work anymore.
what have we learned from this comment? If you cant retain the information long enough to press the rate button and write a comment without making yourself look like an idiot...... perhaps you should just not press the button at all?
actually what should be learned is that if you're going to talk politics/war you should really oh fuck it. i don't even care enough to reply.
