I experienced something very strange the other night and NO it wasn't that there was a man in my bed by his own free will. The said experience was by far the most frightening feeling I've ever had and it last for what seemed hours.

I remember lying in bed and completely aware of my surroundings. The color of my room was the same and so was the light fixture on the ceiling which my husband had installed just days earlier. I could even hear him breathing next to me, sound asleep completely unaware of my current state.

My entire body was humming and tingling and I could hear a constant repetitive buzzing sound in my ear. The only comparison, which I haven't done in years, would be the feeling and sounds heard after taking a hit of nitrous oxide. It was like a waa waa waa waa waa sound. What was even stranger was my inability to move or cry out despite feeling a strange foreign presence in the room. This scared me beyond belief yet I was completely powerless to do anything. I was able to see but that was all. It was as if my mind was alive and fully alert but my body was dead.

Lying there horrified - body humming and tingling hearing the waa waa waa waa sound I tried to wiggle my pinkie but had no luck. Tried to move my arm, turn over, kick, punch but nothing happened. My muscles were useless and the dark presence in my room became more frightening and I needed help to stop whatever was happening to me. I needed to scream and was able, or it seemed I was able, to open my mouth so I tried to cry out for help hoping to wake Steve but no sound came out. I thought I was dying and I was experiencing what death feels like but within an instant, though it felt like hours the experience was over.

I sat up in my bed and looked around my room. Everything was in place, on the floor. I even cracked my toe knuckles by squeezing my foot. I was alive thank god but felt exhausted by the whole experience. The next thing I remember was turning off my alarm in the morning.

I went about my day per usual and convinced myself I had had a bad dream. I've been a bit stressed out lately between my husband and I starting up our own company to family drama to meeting with lawyers and accountants to everyday life- which at times causes some stress. I basically forgot all about my little bedroom experience. I forgot all about it, until last night.

I was watching the History Channel and the program airing was about UFO sightings and abductions. I always watch these shows because scientifically we can not be alone in a galaxy so vast and endless and also because I'm a believer in all of it; but wasn't until they interviewed a woman who claimed to be abducted by aliens that I started to freak out. Said woman experienced the exact same horrifying occurrence that I had only nights earlier.

Waa waa waa sound? Check. Body tingling and humming? Check. Foreign presence in room? Check. Inability to move or speak? Check!!!

Now, did I really think I had been abducted by aliens? Well, highly unlikely but I did think it was a bit odd that I had the exact same experience as someone who claims to have been abducted by aliens.

Immediately and a bit frantic I called my husband who was outside at the time to come into the house.

Then began the: "ok, please don't think I'm fucking out of my mind here, but I was watching this show...yadda...alien abduction...yadda...same exact experience...yadda, story."

Calmly he says to me while putting his hands on my shoulders, "Katie baby, you weren't abducted by aliens. You had sleep paralysis."

Baffled I titled my head and made my signature, nose wrinkled, confused, squish face.

"Sleep Paralysis, what the hell is sleep paralysis?"

Either I had been abducted or more plausible been living under a rock because I had never even heard of sleep paralysis or anything alike.

So he explains to me all about sleep paralysis and how it occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body doesn't. The body stays paralyzed which leaves a person fully aware, but unable to move and sometimes even causes hallucinations causing people to think they've seen and been somewhere they haven't. He then continues to say that low levels of melatonin could stop depolarization in nerves, which prevents the stimulation of the muscles which in turn prevents the body from acting out in their dreams.

I was dumbfounded by this new discovery which vindicates why I love this man. He knows a little about a lot and loves me despite that I can be nutty.

This experience was eye opening (no pun) and created a potpourri of emotions. I am relieved to know that what I experienced was sleep paralysis and I wasn't abducted by aliens. However, as great as this news is for me it still doesn't explain the hard, rice sized object beneath the skin on the back of my neck.

I had no idea about this. That morning when I woke up paralyzed (after a wet dream that involved a gorgeous, floating ass) and saw some kind of horrible hunch-backed figure creep out of my field of vision and out the room (I heard a doorknob turning) was one of the most fucked up days of my life. When I regained control of my muscles, I found the door was locked from the inside. I spent the entire day thinking I was nuts.

I can tell you what that was, it's called "sleep paralysis"! Just kidding, I read the post. Interesting subject; I've read a little bit about the history of it. A lot of stories about incubus/succubus (incubi? whatever), aliens, out-of-body experiences, etc. might be explained by this frightening phenomenon. Which would sort of suck, because I like those stories.

===
there's nothing pleasant about it. it feels like your chest is gonna collapse, that your heart is gonna stop. you don't really get used feeling like you're dying.

---------

I get it pretty frequently.

It used to be scary, but now I just relax and wake up. I find that if you try and fight it by making yourself move quick it seems to take longer, and if you try and go back to sleep you invariably start thinking crazy shit that freaks you out os bad you have to wake up but for a few minutes you have super strength from the adrenalin and your nipples can cut glass from the goose bumps. or maybe it is just me.

I saw some documentary that a lot of people who experience this simply had an episode of something I can remember the name of. It's basically when you wake up during REM sleep. You can't move, and everything seems surreal. Many "abductees" later discovered that's what happened.

And oh my god, the waa waas. I think the official name for nitrous oxide noise is called the waa waas.

The idealized dream-Caul is likely dripping with select Paul Mitchell hair products to the point that he's not even wearing clothes. Rather, he's encased in a shell of crusted, shimmering gel armor. Dressed in nothing but the night wind, awauhi moisture mist and lemon shampoo, he skips about French-Canadian streets shattering windows with a postured look and deftly grabbing the asses of male passers-by with his nimble, maniucured nails. No one will ask about the baguette sticking halfway out his ass until later at The Le Metro Chic Hommerie de la Fantastique Haugh-Haugh-Haugh, because, let's face it, no one there's really interested in, or accustomed to seeing him from the front anyway.

This also probably explains so called demon possession. People who supposedly report not being in control of their bodies when the demon is in control. Along with the hypnagogic hallucinations..viola!....one bonafide demon possession.

Gotcha. My dreams vary from 3rd person to 1st person perspective. Often times I've noticed I'm typically an idealized me - my hair is often at a particular length (which usually isn't however I have it when I'm dreaming), more often than not I don't have glasses, etc.

It's crazy how the mind works, and I was wondering if things like phantom limbs extended into dreams.

we didn't know about hypnagogia or sleep paralysis, that's there nothing spiritual about it.

once we had an episode at the same time during an afternoon nap and we both woke up and were like "whoa! did we like...actually exchange soul for a moment!? FAR OUT!"

This is a good explaination of "alien" or "supernatural" activity.

---------------------------------------------------------

I didn't see anything or anyone in my room.

I guess my question is, are we able to see things in another dimension when in this state? And why do people 'think' they've been abducted?
++++++++++++++++++
Well, that gets into string and M-theory.

Hypnagogia are vivid auditory, visual, and tactile sensations experience during sleep paralysis. They can range from "alien abductions" to grocery shopping to noises and lights. Basically, whatever you can dream can happen during this time. It's just your brain creating sensations because it's not recieving outside stimuli (big words for "dreaming").

Little is understood about this, because it's different for every person that experiences it.

He's correct about the sleep paralysis. Going hand in hand with that are hypnagogic hallucinations. http://skepdic.com/hypnagogic.html

I haven't experienced sleep paralysis per se, but I get hypnagogic hallucinations frequently when I'm under stress. I'll "hear" something and open my eyes and "see" shadowy human figures in darker corners. This of course causes me to involuntarily react with fight or flight and sit bolt upright in bed ready to either defend myself or get the hell out of there.

Of course once this happens, I instantly awaken completely and find there is nothing there so I lay back down, heart thumping, and try to go back to sleep.

Funky! Sleep disorders and qliches are really interesting, neurologically wise.

There is a little known sleep disorder called hypnopompic paralysis. During this time, you are technically asleep and awake at the same time. You are paralyzed because you are asleep, but aware of it because you are also awake. The "experiences" you have are technically real, because you are asleep, but awake enough to experience them fully.

This is a good explaination of "alien" or "supernatural" activity.

I have experienced this several times. Partly because I sleep with one eye open (nerve damage from childhood) and this allows me REM sleep to occasionally pick up something weird and alert me.

There has even been reasearch done to disconnect the mechanism responsible for this in our brains. researchers did it to some cats and whatnot in the 40's and 50's. The cats proceeded to fall asleep and would run around the room (albeit poorly coordinated due to being asleep).

Your hubby is smart. The thing to remember is that the sleep paralasys is the stage just before an out of body experiance.
Try to let it happen again and don't panic when you hear that sound, "push" your self out of your body. some people find rolling to one side to work better.

Don't worry, you won't get stuck outside, you will come back to your body.

If you don't want the OBE, focus on regaining a small part of motion to your body, wiggle your toe or something. once you move a little, the rest will come back on-line quickly.

I get that from time to time. One of two things will happen: I'll wake up and be unable to move or speak and won't realize that it's sleep paralysis and I'll start freaking out, which basically amounts to little more than a hushed sound and little to no movement.

Or I'll carry it through into my dream and play out some sort of scene where I'm in bed while someone's breaking in, but I'm totally incapable of moving and doing anything to stop it. Like crush their skull like bug with my victory hands and dance all about in the resulting gore.

Anyway...so typically the man/woman thief/killer will just casually walk over to me and smother me with a pillow or choke me since I can't fight back. It's like sitting in quicksand while a gnu or hippopotamus walks by and drops a deuce right on your head.

I die in my dreams a lot. Go me.
