It's been a while since I've posted one of my original music entries, and being that there isn't much on the front page today, I figured I'd throw something up for a change of pace instead of just reviewing...
My co-worker Joe wrote the lyrics some time ago, and he asked me recently if I had any ideas for arranging it musically. Didn't take too long to come up with what you'll hear...it's just my voice and acoustic guitar. Quality is scratch demo but that's not important for the confines of Uber. Drop your constructive thoughts on lyrical/musical improvement...

I concur about the lyrics. I do. I concur.
Actually, I think the sentiment is great, and I like the phrase the song revolves around, settling for the dirt. It's just the execution of the rest that is choppy and mishandled.
It's like he's just writing what he means as if it was an essay. He's not abstracting any of it and leaving anything for the reader/listener. There's too much explanation (or exposition) and not enough story.
Even reworded it would sound a little better. For instance, instead of the first stanza being:
If money is not my color
If riches are not to be for me
Then I will have to do without
And only live off what is free
... it could be:
I don't want your money
Riches are not for me
I don't have to do without
When I live off what is free
I think that states what he intends more simply and directly, without all the extra syllables and prepositional phrases. You could do something similar with the rest of it too, I think. But I don't want to be THAT big of a jackass to do a complete re-write.
