I'm going to go ahead and start poking my nose into controversial topics and discuss gay marriage. I'd like to point out that I'm a deist. My religion shouldn't matter in a political field, but unfortunately religion seems to play a part in this debate.
In July of 2006 the Washington State Supreme Court ruled against gay marriage. Their basis for this decision was: Gay couples aren't able to have children. Apparently the whole point of getting married is to pro-create, and we need to keep marriage 'safe' for that. I don't remember this being in the wedding vows I took. "I promise to love, cherish, and bear your children in sickness and in health..." did I doze off and just miss that line? I thought I got married because I was in love and wanted to declare my committed intention to spend the rest of my life with the man I loved.
Anyway, a group of gay rights activists known as The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance (WDMA) proposed a few additions to this ruling. Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed accepted this proposal and dubbed it worthy. It's was Initiative 957. Unfortunately the Initiative was withdrawn by the sponsor and will not be making the Nov. 2007 ballot.
Why post anything about it if it's no longer in process you ask. Because I think it's a damn good idea, and I hope that someone else picks this up and runs with it.
The Initiative had 5 clauses that need to be met for a legal marriage.
1) You need to prove you are capable of having children before you get married. No tying of tubes, no vasectomy, no unfortunate infertility of any kind. Both parties aren't able to make babies? Too bad, no wedding day for you.
2) You will need to file Proof of Procreation (insert trumpets here) within 3 years of being married or your marriage will be annulled.
3) Couples that marry out of state will still need to provide the all important Proof of Procreation or their marriage will be "unrecognized".
4) A process for filing Proof of Procreation will need to be created (duh).
5) It will become a criminal act for people in an unrecognized marriage to receive marriage benefits. None of this nifty tax break, spousal health insurance from work stuff.
I really really like this. It's taking the system and making it work for you. Ok, fine, make a shitty law and give the rest of the state a dumbass reason for it. Good for you. Now, back it up!!
I've bopped around online checking out other people's opinions on this, and the majority of the people who have a problem with this mention God regularly. God hates gays. May they burn in a lake of fire and brimstone and how dare they tell me how to run my marriage. Please excuse my language, but f*** these people! They're happy to sit around and tell people, people who are American citizens and should have all the same freedoms, rights, and responsibilities they do, who they can and cannot marry, but mercy forbid that someone do the exact same thing to them. To top it off they have to drag in Almighty God. Last I checked God had no place in our government. It's in the friggin' constitution. Lrn 2 reed ppl.
Adding a little on to this that isn't relevant to the Initiative but is on almost the same subject, I see nothing wrong with a gay couple adopting kids. Judging by most (not all, not by a long shot but most) couples, when you decide to be with someone forever you want to build a family. Theoretically this plan includes little person or people to impress your values on and carry your legacy on to the next generation. If that happens to be a gay marriage, so what?
Some people like to play the 'think of the children' card. "Gays shouldn't adopt kids because the kids will be made fun of for having gay parents." Bite me. Was anyone not made fun of for something when they were a child? I was made fun of. Frequently. In first grade I came home in tears because the other kids warped my name into a (now) amusing rhyme. My hair was too short. I didn't wear Tommy Hilfiger clothes. Kids will always find a reason to bash on other kids. It's what kids do. It sucks, it makes them miserable occasionally, but that's life. Please, was anyone out there not made fun of as a kid? If someone figures out how to make kids act like respectful adults (is the irony seeping through?) let me know. After you tell me the secret to that one, let me know how to get my husband to take out the trash without being told. And I want a pony.
Back on topic, I think this is a worthy cause, and I wish I had lived in WA at the time so I could have signed petitions to get this onto the November ballot. Then I'd get off my lazy ass and register to vote so I could make this part of the law.

Umm. I've had a bit of a crappy day so kind of got lost somewhere between the Gays actually comming up with a few amendments which would stop them from being able to get married.
I'n confused which isnt anything new to be honest. Or were they trying to take the piss?
Any way i dont really give a rats arse about letting Homosexuals have weddings, surely it should all be about love and wanting to show people that you are commited to your mate.
